Do most people really care, I know I don't. So Apple either knows where I have been or if the phone is stolen, the person can findo out where I have been, WOW HOW EXCITING FOR THEM

ps. surprised the classic "I was tracked at your Mom's house" joke hasn't cropped up yet.

Are there instructions on how to make that cool plotter map like the Gizmodo guy has? I would love to see a map of where I've been in the last year.

I'm annoyed...

...as I regularly use two apps to accomplish this exact same thing, only now to find my phone does this better and automatically!

I just ask that Apple make an app that allows me easier access to this data. Add in the ability to delete certain locations (ala Google Latitude), and hopefully that will reduce the concerns of many.

And no, the data is not hyper accurate. Often it plots me over a mile from my actual location and usually I'm shown a block or two away.

I like how people refer to "Mr Jobs." Because you know, Steve, personally is pouring over the GPS logs of 108 milllion+ iPhone users. he's THAT obsessed about you, and you're THAT important to him.

You didn't know that is the reason why he is taking a leave of absence from the company:p. Steve wants to know all about the things and places you've gone and that takes time. By the time the iPhone 6 comes out, he'll be finished all the logs and back.

On a more serious note, while I am concerned that the data is being stored in an unencrypted format (if you dont encrypt your backups) I do not have a problem with the tracking itself. The main reason for this is that it approximates where you are based on tower triangulation as opposed to your exact location. Also, the data can be used to bring towers to populated areas that may be lacking signal.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_7 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8E303 Safari/6533.18.5)

No matter what kind of phone you carry you can be tracked. If people are worried about it the don't carry a cell phone.

I would love to hear RIM describe to me WHY they have been recording this same information!
RIM, like Apple, Google, Palm, and Microsoft all have a paragraph (or two) about location services in the Terms of Service you had to agree to before you were allowed to use the device.

Here is RIM's:
In addition to other personal information described in this Agreement, when You use Your Handheld Product or enable data services or location-based functionality, Handheld Product location information (including, without limitation, GPS information, carrier ID, tower ID and signal strength of visible WiFi or cell towers) may be communicated to RIM Group of Companies. RIM Group of Companies may use such information to provide You with location based services, including, without limitation, services facilitating the sharing of Your Handheld Product location information with other persons, including without limitation, Third Party Services used with Your BlackBerry Solution. You should give due consideration before agreeing to have Your personal information disclosed to other persons. We may also use such information to create data in which Your personal information has been aggregated or made anonymous, and may use it to provide location-sensitive advertising.

because it should only work when requested or at the very least tell you its always on.

It would be complicated to make it work only when requested. And does it bother you that much? Let's say someone gets this file of everywhere you've been. What are they doing to do with it? Not much. At least if you're no one important. If you think this is bad... You need to learn about other things that are potentially more 'scary'.

One being the actual data stored on your device. If you delete a picture or a SMS, by no means is it actually gone from your phone. Even if you restore your phone back to factory settings, all your map locations, pictures you have taken, Text messages, and browsing history are stored on the device. I think the only thing that actually gets removed are your emails. Correct me if I'm wrong but those get removed from the device.

Now with that being said, an average person could not obtain those deleted files. Law enforcement/the government can. It's pretty scary... The things they can do that people don't know about.

You bring up an interesting point. Is this information wiped when you wipe your phone to sell it?

Well now a US Congressman is demanding Apple explain! LOL! I can see why tey would be worried!

Even if you wipe your iPhone to resell it, all of your previous data is still on the phone. (Scary I know) But there isn't much a normal person would be able to do. It's not like they would be able to access that information. Like I said before, only law enforcement/the government would be able to break into that stored data.

Things like this have solved several murder cases. A phone of the victim/culprit is found, and they are able to locate so much information from that phone. Maps (Pin-pointing locations with timestamps), numbers the phone has called, any text messages they were made. Perhaps even pictures taken from the scene. It's really endless.

What people really should be worried about are those massive storage hard drives that people store EVERYTHING on. ALL that information is traceable and is able to be retrieved. The only way to stop someone from getting information off one of those is to physically destroy the hard drive.

I just ran the app and it's telling me that I've (or my phone has) been to islands here in the the UK that I definitely never have been nor been near to. The data seems slightly inaccurate.

.... It's not to track you. They can't track you, they can steal your device and see where you've been going to, etc. but it's not like they have a database collecting your movements to then do a conspiracy against all you important people.

I am quite sure good uncle Steve would never do such an ugly thing as tracking people. Like checking where your phone is right now. NEVER!

Have to check with your better half?

Surely turning off location services would stop this from happening?

Im presuming if location services are ON then the user of the phone is giving consent for the phone to log locations.....

PS, whats the program people are using to bring up these locations?

Sorry but if our "law enforcement/the government" is not good about keeping a secret. If they have the ability, anyone who wanted it bad enough would, too.

Some people are all up in arms regarding this, when it's been happening for a long time now.

It's crazy that this is a big issue for some, yet I can log onto facebook and find out anything I want about someone in a matter of minutes.

blah

Anyone who has the technology and programs to do, could do it. You are completely correct. However, that number is probably very small so I wouldn't really worry about it happening. But yes, if your phone, computer, portable harddrive, camera, or laptop fell into the wrong hands. You could indeed be screwed.

the location data being referred to is obtained by triangulating your position using cell towers. Apple is claiming it's a bug and was only meant to store the data as temporary files.

Easy fix= download "untrackerd" from Cydia

Steve doesn't care about our location. However, that big Apple Ion Cannon in orbit likes to know your current coordinates. Purely for defensive purposes of course. :)

A bug like Google's recording all that wifi traffic was a bug?

I would suppose so. I find it highly unlikely that Apple has had a "bug" that "accidentally" was recording every place your iPhone has been since iOS 4 was released, and it conveniently wasn't noticed until now. They're just covering their a$$es about screwing up.

You need to step out of the box and watch all news. If you are just looking at what ABC, NBC and CBS is telling you then you do not know the whole story. Try looking at all of it and then filtering out the facts. None of them are perfect but filtering out Fox just because it is Fox will leave you without the tools to think for yourself!:)

Fox is not News. It's the propaganda arm of the Republican Party. It is correctly shunned by anyone seeking "news".

As far as this issue of Apple tracking your movement, it's just paranoia and a non-issue, as far as I am concerned. But hey, if it bothers you, don't use the phone.
