It amazes me the comments that are on CNN.. People are so dumb and are ready to jump on anything.. It amazes me also that CNN has "iPhone Tracking You" but nothing about Android, Rim, BB...

I downloaded the iPhone tracker program and looked at mine and honestly it had a bunch of dots around the city I am never at. So I don't really mind that this is on the phone.. Im sure it will be fixed by Apple and forgotten just like the iPhone Antenna..

Fox is not News. It's the propaganda arm of the Republican Party. It is correctly shunned by anyone seeking "news".

Are you seriously turning this political? We're on a forum for Apple advice, not expressing political views

Well it looks like we know know what kind of info our phones send at night in the documented nightly data transfers.

"Android devices keep a record of the locations and unique IDs of the last 50 mobile masts that it has communicated with, and the last 200 Wi-Fi networks that it has "seen". These are overwritten, oldest first, when the relevant list is full."

But it is nowhere near as big as the iPhone file and harder to access. I suppose that's the only real problem, it should be encrypted, but even then does it even matter that they can see where we've been.

Yeah maybe Apple should give people the option like when you install certain apps but given turning it off could slow down location services I think most people would opt in.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I'm still not very worried about the tracking.

I can think of many, many legitimate uses for this.

Perhaps it is a good idea to let people know it is happening, but this kind of activity is not unique to Apple iOS and I think it's just a part of everyday life that in this modern electronic world we just have to accept that it is a part of leading our lives safely.

Why does this only bother non-iPhone owners
:)

I think it makes all of us take a moment and think about it, but you're right that the loudest noise seems to come from Apple's long term detractors.

The issue was originally "blown," however, by former Apple employees who were simply working on how to interface with iOS for their own business purposes. They weren't really Apple detractors looking for weaknesses...they were working on their own applications for their own businesses.

After finding out that much of this data is being provided for Apple's iAds, I can't risk personal and business information being reported for third party marketing so I ended up going back to the Blackberry Tour sadly enough. May end up using iPod Touch instead.

I don't really see the safety part.
And what important legitimate safety use would require a GPS record of your locations for the last month?

This is my response to Android, Rim, BB, etc. users thinking that their phones aren't tracking their every move or that they have the ability to "opt out" of being tracked.

Your phone is triangulated constantly grasshopper by cell towers. And yes, they keep a record of it.

Oh, they've been tracking you since long before smart phones came around.

Why single out android, rim (oh and BB are RIM)? ALL cell phones, dumb ones as well as smart ones are recorded by the operator (not Apple, Google or RIM).

What exactly does this have to do with safety?

Gathering data on the device that is part of the devices advertised function? How sinister... Fox News' ability to sensationalize the trivial never ceases to amaze/entertain.

none of this concerns me..hell.. my "places" in my photo album has me taking pictures in Africa!!!. I have never been there in my life. I don't think verizon even has services there. Some of my location based apps have me in PA and NY? This is quite annoying since I live in TN.

Not just where, but also WHEN.

Tom B.

Lol and what's the big deal? Apple knows you bought groceries at 1:25pm on a Saturday. Oh know...

The only thing that I could see being an issue would be if perhaps you are married and you've been going places you shouldn't be... Do you really think Apple cares where you're going? They're to busy counting their cash to care about you location.

I'm more shocked at how many people are clueless when it comes to electronic devices. I just kinda figured it would be a known-thing that your iPhone (And any phone for that matter) could and is tracking your location. Along with storing all data.

I guess those same people wouldn't believe me if I said a regular digital camera (Without a SD card) has ALL your pictures ever taken on the camera stored on it. But hey.. People always learn the hard way. :)

Fox News doesn't really do traditional news. It's a coordinated narrative, mixed with thinly veiled opinions. Hell, they only really have like 2 actual news people. Granted, they aren't the only ones. But they tend to pander to the most excitable and least knowledgeable people. And therefor they tend to make much bigger stories out of very little and often, nothing.
