I have 500+ songs on iPhone and I didn't pay for any of them. It's not that I don't want to or "hate" it, it's that, as a student, I don't have $500 to toss on music and often iTunes doesn't even have the song or certain mix I'm looking for and there are other places to find those songs in good quality,

Not a justification for theft, sorry. Every one deserves to be paid for their work.

I work retail and sell majority of Apple products or iphones" and the number one response I get when people want something else is " I hate paying for music". I completely understand where they are coming from, but since when has music been free?

I have some co-workers that also hate paying for music and I did a test, I own a vehicle with a 7 channel 250W stereo system with 1 12" sub, downloaded a "Hip Hop" genre song and put the "Gtunes" song on first.... volume was almost full blast and could barely hear any bass at all and highs were not even good sounding at all. Same song off iTunes and I could barely have it 1/4 of the way volume without feeling like my windows are gonna break from so much bass.

Sorry for the ranting, but I just don't see why people "hate the iphone" for such a silly reason or hate paying for things as little as .99 to $1.29 per song. Yet they will buy their 2 year old a $169 3Ds and $39.99 games.

so my question is , whats your response to people like that?

Once again, sorry for ranting and not trying to say "I am right" or anything, just confused as to how people see things.
No more paying for music=no music period! Artists are NOT going to continue to create music if their work is given away.... And I don't blame them!

Artist get about 2-3% of record sales if signed with a major label.

File sharing has been going on for how long now? They're still going to make music.

The music industry has changed anyway. Artist are expected to create their own buzz before a label will want to spend the big money on them. That's why you see people on youtube or passing out free cd's some place. Promoting themselves. Lead singer for Journey was seen on youtube, Justin Bieber, Soulja boy. Since this thread started about hiphop. Why do you see so many rappers putting out mixtapes for free. It's to create buzz. You're going to always have people downloading music just like you had them copying cassettes. If an artist is good people will buy his music

You see more artist promoting something or selling something now more than hyping their music. Look at Puff. He's not really about music any more like the early 90's. He uses it to promote his other ventures ie clothes line, cologne, chiroc etc etc. You even have those that try to move into acting and even with movies being bootlegged you have them setting records. Look no further than the Avengers.

Then you have some musicians that want their music to be heard whether they are paid or not.

All that to say. Artist are still going to put out music in hopes of hitting it big times change and you have to change you business model or fall to the side. Some can some won't.

If you're good enough you can get a tad more but labels want you to come in already with some buzz.

Major labels used to promote the artist and create buzz, now the artist pretty much has to do it. That's why you see more and more people on Indy labels or starting their own label.

Most signed artist get paid from touring and concerts. Wiz Khalifa stays touring and thats where he makes his money.

You even have labels trying to force their artisit in to 360 deals:rolleyes:

I've used the iphone for years and I don't remember the last time I paid for music. I use Google music, which makes it easy to torrent once and play everywhere.

$10/month. Weird, that sounds like money.

But I'm sure that's different than buying ten .99 songs/month. That would be atrocious.

I was just suggesting an alternative he could mention to "these people", your example is off though, unless you actually only listen 10 new songs every month.

Cause I sure don't, I am sure downloading more than a 100 songs every month is an atrocious act. The 99$ isn't atrocious at all... which is almost a year of spotify premium.

Atrocious no?

You said it all. The real "artist" that I support generally offer their music for sale on their own label or directly from their website. I love attending concerts and will gladly pay to see someone live. I usually try to buy some type of merchandise as well. Artist didn't move away from record labels due to poor sales, they moved away because they were tired of the record labels controlling the music.

I will occasionally buy random songs off of iTunes or sometimes full length albums that I'm sure my local stores probably won't have in stock.

People bootlegging music isn't what's hurting the industry. Yeah people should get paid for their work but the music industry has stolen more from their own artist that downloaders. I can't remember who it was but there was word going around that the label leaked one of it's artist albums to the internet in order to try and kill sales. I think the artist was leaving the label or their was some disbute. It's been a minute so I don't remember what all was being said.

I know we've gone a little off topic but yeah vastoholic a lot of artist start their own label and if you're an already established artist. It's even easier to promote yourself. Another thing a lot of people are doing their own music in house, all you need is a bedroom/space and then send off the product to get mixed and mastered.
