Oh so that's what they advertise. Crap quality streaming, but all you can eat? Gee, how "uncarrier" of them. Can't wait till we stop being raped.
Damn that DVD quality video on a 4" screen! If only there was a way for me to use 3x more data with negligible quality increase!!

You guys have no idea what resolution actually means do you. I bet you think a 25mpixel photo will look a lot better than a 10mpixel photo on your phone lol! FYI, watching a DVD on your 32" HDTV will give you worse quality than binge-on streaming on your phone/tablet-take a moment to think about that.

Put it this way I had unlimited data through AT&T and was paying 150 a month for two lines. I got tired of their threats to get rid of unlimited data and not being able to tether. When I came back to the market I looked at what was out was out there and t-mobile has the best offer by far. 20 gb per line for two lines for 120 total. Price that at Verizon and AT&T it is around 300 a month. Sure the service isn't exactly the same but the price makes it easily the best value. Then with all you can stream music and now video. How do you beat that.

Well, ATT is comparable to that, price wise, although I have 6 lines, but it equals out...blah..blah. But, I understand that they may have twisted some arms in the industry for the better, but I have great service with ATT and do not pay near as much as I did even 1.5 years ago. Perhaps T-Mobile has a lot to do with that..and with that, I thank them. Other than that, their service is at best sub-par'ish. As you said, Maybe it's better than back a couple years ago, but I know others that are stuck with T-Mobile for the time being and are chomping at the bit to leave.
Whatever works for you is awesome, and I hope it only gets better for us.

Merry Christmas!!

You do realize that YouTube also changes the video resolution without input from the user right. In this case they use current download speeds as the deciding factor instead of reduced Data usage.
The videos are hosted on YouTube itself. They can do what they want with them.

What T-mobile is doing is violating net neutrality. I will wager that binge on will get shut down by the FCC. It's only a matter of time.

Don't say that. Most people around here will argue otherwise, so obsessed with their free things that they don't see any issue with it.

Its really simple since some internet providers are now capping your data you will just run out then you can buy more. My provider charges 15$/100GB. I get 300GB/per month to start. Internet is not unlimited anymore.

Still unlimited here.

That said, landline ISPs can charge for stuff like that because they can, not because they have to. Mobile data is a bit different because spectrum is a lot harder to obtain more of than fiber.

I'm ok with T-Mo's Binge-On but I start having problem with their network since they introduced this program. Everytime I watch video on HD it buffers a lot when I say a lot I mean a lot. It stutters every few seconds and it's very frustrating. I don't think it's a speed issue because I did the test multiple times. I'm getting over 25mbps and the still having trouble even when the video is only 5 minutes. I was fooled by Legere's mouth and T-Mobile's still a mediocre network. Last night we lost power due to storm. My wife got LTE then me and my kids got EDGE. I'm still trying to like them, but my frustration is increasing especially for that video streaming I mentioned.

you didn't read the article. YouTube isn't a Binge partner, therefore it's not free or sponsored data -- you're paying for it. thus it shouldn't be throttled. and there's no way to turn it off since it isn't supposed to be throttled anyway.

It probably isn't even throttled. YouTube just has 50,000,000,000 videos and it seems like they're all stuffed onto 5 servers. YouTube is slow as hell everywhere.

Some questions.

What constitutes a "partner" i.e. do they have to use special coding on their sites, and in their content, to be considered a "partner"?

Have these partners paid a single cent to T-Mobile to become a "partner"?

I club them for still using the misleading "unlimited" data crap - when it is capped - I've tested their service once they start throttling it becomes useless, but not this. It's unreasonable to expect unlimited HD quality video streams for free and HD on a tablet or phone is stupid and a waste of bandwidth. I don't know why so many people watch videos on their mobile devices anyway just seems like a poor way to watch something, but each their own.

T-Mobile said that while Binge on is on that it would cost you no data with the services included and that other data would be compressed and you would save data on that. SEE THIS FROM THEIR FAQ......

Video is the number one way people use wireless data, with Binge On™ we are setting video free. No Overages. Ever!

  • Stream unlimited video FREE on your favorite streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Sling, ESPN, Showtime, Starz and more without ever using your high-speed data. Check out the full list and stay tuned for more on the way. We won’t stop. Any new or existing customer with 3GB data plan or larger can stream for free without worrying about your data.
  • Plus, almost all other video streaming is optimized for mobile so you watch 3 times more video with your data plan.

To top it off if youtube had their stuff together it could easily be part of binge on.

It's possible they categorically don't want to be part of it cause video quality is downgraded.

Resolution != Quality

Compression has far more impact on quality than resolution, so for T-Mobile to claim "DVD quality" based solely on resolution is complete tosh.

But to be fair, DVD uses an encoding that is truly horriffic by today's standards. When trying to watch a DVD on a large TV it's the compression artifacts that make you want to puke, not the resolution. Beating DVD results is trivial with a modern encoding and half the bitrate, but it's of course possible to mess it up if you really want to. Now, I have not seen the Binge On compression we're talking about, but I'm going to give Deutsche Telekom the benefit of the doubt until the opposite is demonstrated.

Still unlimited here.

A number of cable companies are quietly adding caps (Comcast), most users don't know the difference but try streaming some UltraHD. I bitch at my ISP just about every month. I try to make some humor out of it but they know I'm not a happy customer and would switch if I could. I called this month and asked if I could get data roll over or a refund for the data I didn't use since they are so quick to charge for more, she said no. I was like well where did my extra data go? How is it just gone? Anyway I joked with her about and she understands but just works there. I hate it I have to watch my data like a hawk. If something goes haywire (like apples AppleTV 4 streaming screensaver used 60GB over a weekend) you could run out of data pretty quick.

Yes, MacRumors, 480P is DVD quality.

It's amusing to hear the gasps over 480P "DVD quality." I remember when Blu-Ray first hit the shelves and "budget conscious" folks were all suggesting people just by a DVD player with upscaling because it looked just as good. Never mind it was the exact same bits with some hocus pokus added, same way alcohol is mixed with some "night time" cold relievers. They were poo-pooing Blu-Ray as expensive and unnecessary because of upscalers.

The joke is that was for big screens. We are taking about 480p for relatively tiny screens. And the iPad screens are actually still the perfect size for 480p.

I don't have TMob, but not sure why anyone is looking a gift horse in the mouth here, including YouTube. Maybe especially YouTube. Eyeballs are eyeballs, no? And honestly, most of the content on YouTube is best viewed in 000p any way. Heh.

Hmm, I imagine it might get messy in an area where many users are doing this at once. Streaming a HD video is going to tax the bandwidth. It's not like hundreds of people can keep a super fast connection without consequences.

That said I've no idea what the bandwidth of their hardware is. It might be possible for everyone connected to download at full speed 24/7 without interrupting the service.

So, YouTube is complaining about low video quality??

Is this the most ironic news story of 2015??

There is no good reason the government needs to involve itself in any of these issues. YouTube doesn't get to tell T-Mobile how to run their business.

New T-Mobile customer here and I don't have a problem with this. I can switch off Bing On anytime I want if I wanted 720p streams. Youtube may not like it, but it's MY choice, not theirs.
Alphabet only likes choice when it is them choosing.
