Oh yeah that reminds me, I just happened to read last week that the YouTube app in my Sony smart TV (circa 2012) is not going to work anymore. I imagine the same for many other brands as well.

I also have a 2012 Sony HDTV model (KDL-40EX640) which lost the YouTube app, but thankfully for me, I have a 2012 Sony blu-ray player (BDP-S590) connected to it which got a new YouTube app a couple of months ago to replace the old YouTube app. Three years ago, I almost bought the cheaper BDP-S390 model (which also lost the YouTube app) but, decided to spend a little more in case I wanted to take advantage of the 3D feature of the BDP-S590. I never bought a 3D HDTV, but it looks like it was still a good decision to get that model, otherwise I would be looking for a new smart blu-ray player in the next week or two. You never know.;)

The app has always sucked. It was inferior to the Apple app, and when that was discontinued, I used the website. It's lousy that they'll be screwing owners of TV devices. The computer industry is lousy to consumers. Buy buy buy or you get kicked out. Planned obsolescence is a capitalist dream and the computer industry is nothing but.

Oh no. My four year old son and his iPad 1 will be heartbroken. Watches all his cartoons on that.

He can still use Safari. I use Safari instead of the app anyway because the app does almost nothing but put in ads. Actually, I don't get why anyone uses the app if Safari can play the videos without ads.

No big deal, I mean how many people are on devices that old?

The ATV 2 is pretty much the same as the newer ones except that it only does 720p, not 1080p. It's the black one, not the old white one that ran a modified Tiger.

In all fairness, Apple TV 2nd generation is nearly 5 years old product with A4 processor and 256MB RAM. Apple updated its OS for 4 years, which I think is more than reasonable.

Fair? No! It's 4.5 years since first release (Sept 1, 2010) and people who bought one prior to March 7, 2012 (just over 3 years) are now SOL.

Planned obsolescence is increasing with ever shorter life cycles. It's a waste of money, resources and adding to our garbage dumps.

If you think 3 years depreciation of any product is reasonable, you obviously have too much disposable income and not enough sense.

I'm increasingly less inclined to buy newer technology if I'm forced to buy something new every 3 years or less or loose functionality.

I can still play my 25+ year old CDs in my roughly 15 year old CD player.
My 11 year old iPod still functions well, thanks to a new battery. It fulfills its function. Why should I be forced to spend money so the "new" device can show me more ads?

Convoluted thinking.
Convoluted market.
Manipulated consumer!

When I read the title I thought "oh poor ATV1 users, but I guess they had a good run".

But ATV2?

I don't think you understood what you read. It's not only Apple devices but Google devices, gaming consoles, smart TVs, and dvd/BR players.

I don't think you understood what you read. The OP was making a joke about Apple not being the culprit - this time - who wants you to go buy new devices. But oh yeah, explaining jokes is only half the fun...

I pity more your 4 year old son for having to watch his stories on an iPad! In my days my parents read them from a book for me, or I was drawing with pen and paper, playing outside...

Your son will have a very "2D view" of his childhood... poor kiddie!

The ad on the new youtube app on atv3 is really annoying, the ad is longer than the most of the contents.

Well said. My devices are still on io6 with amazingly quick UI. No Youtube on it means one less distraction/need I have thankfully and even better since advertising is being added.

I used to upgrade yearly from the original iphone to iphone 4s. I got over this frame of mind having the latest and greatest. I'll upgrade my phone most likely when its stolen or damaged. I still need a phone at the very least :)

Boo! YouView better continue to work. If Apple actually provided proper software support like the rest of the world, this wouldn't be as much of an issue as more devices would receive an update.

Shape up Apple. This planned obsolescence is getting obvious and quite honestly, it's dumb and preventing me from buying anymore new Apple products.

Isn't this youtube's fault??

It's both Apple and Google's fault. However, I understand the need to update APIs. I do not understand Apple's obsession with dropping software support pretty much one year after said software is released.

Actually I do understand it. Apple want more £ for doing less.

What support did Apple drop one year after release?

Pretty much every version of iOS and every version of OS X post Snow Leopard. An occasional security patch for a legacy OS may slip through beyond the release of a new OS, but most of the time, once Apple have made a new version, the old version is done. This creates incompatibilities by the dozen as APIs update (like with youtube now), Apps update and Apple themselves update their own services.

Did you even read the article? This is not an Apple-only issue. There are Google TV versions that no longer support THEIR OWN APP. There are smart TVs, some as late as 2013 models that no longer work. Sorry, but this one falls directly on Google.

But none of that likely matters, because you just seem intent on bashing Apple. It's apparent in all of your posts.

Did I say he doesn't do that or I don't do that? No. Thanks for making the assumption. ass--u---me

Are the old iOS and AppleTV apps made by Google or Apple? I'm going to put my money on Apple. Meaning Apple have full power to send an update to these devices that fixes the issue and updates for the new API. Which I'm hoping they will do, but based on their history, I'm not holding my breath.

Google can do what the hell it wants with it's devices and software, I don't really use them. I'm on MacRumors right now and if I have a problem with my few Google based devices I'll be right onto their forums. To say Apple have no responsibility with the software they created, a service they chose to put into their devices, is nothing short of sheer folly.

Aren't new or updated API's part of a new version of iOS? I used to feel guilty for skipping the ads on YT. Not anymore :p

That's what this is about, isn't it? Eliminating the last of the ad-free apps.
That's exactly right, some months ago there was an update to the YouTube app on ATV3 that enabled ads

The YouTube app is one of the least user friendly ATV(3) apps. You can't do anything except watch stuff. No way to see the description before watching, no way to delete something from your Watch Later after watching it (nor add), no way to like, no way to add to a playlist, no way to manage playlists or anything else for that matter.
