Howso? From my eyes this looks exactly like Apple refusing to support their older software.

At some point, products reach "end of life" in terms of manufacturer support, and I understand that. That said, there's a big difference between "desupporting" something (which may still allow it to function, even if not supported) and intentionally breaking it.

Terrible tsk tsk tsk

Whether it is 3 years or 5 years, not supporting basic function like youtube viewing is a terrible thing. Yes in this day and age everyone gets a new device every other year or is that now every other quarter but the ones that are impacted by this the most are those who cannot afford to do that.
My lower level staff who finally was able to save enough to get an older version of these devices, now she is unable to enjoy the reason she bought the device for in the first place. Can she upgrade?...probably not..what's her option? Or by the time she can, those would be obsolete too..so I guess these people are SOL? Nice!!
Next thing you know Facebook, chat and emails will be shutdown on them too :( tsk tsk tsk capitalism at it's best!! :(

Don't blame the old TV set makers when the TV stations stop broadcasting analog NTSC TV signals. (Maybe they still do in Africa.)

The A4 CPU in the ATV2 was designed by ARM, not an Apple customized layout. No one left at Apple knows how to even attempt to do a secure OS for these old ARM cores. So it's dead to them.

Also they want all ATV2 users to upgrade to the ATV4 after the next month or so, in all likelihood.

Hahah your funny. Communist by any chance?

HBO Now but not YouTube

Apple has no problem putting a brand new app on appleTV 2nd Generation to sell you HBO. Clearly Google and apple aren't playing nice and their customers are the ones who suffer. On the 3rd generation you can gauge the relationship of the vendor with apple by the row on which their app appears.

Except its very old.
And rumors suggest an ATV4 next month.

And yet it's still $69...

So she can spend $69 and get an ATV3. She can probably easy resell her ATV2 as they are in demand for hacking for $100+.

I have to laugh that she bought an ATV ONLY because of a YouTube app - ignoring the dozens of others still available and working

I've just installed the official YouTube app on my iPad 1 (iOS 5.1.1) and it appears to work. Just watched the preview of the new SuperGirl show on it. I've tried a few longer videos and they start playing but they stopped after a couple of minutes so maybe there's some issue still. I can't install the latest version of the app because it needs iOS 7 or higher. At least the old Netflix app still works.

As an ATV2 user, I find the timing of this suspicious. With a new ATV4 coming out in June was this done to increase frustration with ATV2 so that we lemming over to ATV4? Nah....nobody would be that evil.

Fair? No! It's 4.5 years since first release (Sept 1, 2010) and people who bought one prior to March 7, 2012 (just over 3 years) are now SOL.

Planned obsolescence is increasing with ever shorter life cycles. It's a waste of money, resources and adding to our garbage dumps.

If you think 3 years depreciation of any product is reasonable, you obviously have too much disposable income and not enough sense.

I'm increasingly less inclined to buy newer technology if I'm forced to buy something new every 3 years or less or loose functionality.

I can still play my 25+ year old CDs in my roughly 15 year old CD player.
My 11 year old iPod still functions well, thanks to a new battery. It fulfills its function. Why should I be forced to spend money so the "new" device can show me more ads?

Convoluted thinking.
Convoluted market.
Manipulated consumer!
I agree with tentales 100% here, I'm an environmental scientist, been working in the waste management industry for going on 18 years now, and I can tell you that electronics waste is a huge issue, and the explosion of small consumer electronics over the past 20 years has been the main contributor to this issue. And a lot of that is fed by the culture of the technology industry, its love of planned obsolescence, whether it is hardware companies like Apple releasing the latest and greatest iWhatever every year or software/apps companies constantly releasing updated software that within a few versions is not backwardly compatible with older devices. These devices are filled with RoHS substances. Recycling electronics is not the answer, both on the back end because you never get 100% compliance with recycling, and because recycling itself produces wastes, or on the front end because every time manufacturers create new devices they generate wastes. The only responsible thing is to keep these electronics going as long as possible, and both the hardware and software segments of the technology industry are diametrically opposed to doing that. Apple, Youtube, and other Silicon Valley companies love to coast on West Coast greenie hipster cred, but from an ecological and economic standpoint, their business models are extremely irresponsible. If you are someone saying this "makes sense" or you think supporting an electronic device for only 4 years before software upgrades render it useless is "more than reasonable," you are part of the problem. If you are one of those people who line up to be the first to get the latest and greatest gadget while you still have a perfectly functioning older gadget, you are part of the problem.

Yep nothing like scrolling through a bunch of dead threads clueless people have bounced to the top.

*edit*
Crap!now it's bounced again! Will it ever stop??? LOL
When I signed up for this website and agreed to the rules of use, I did not see a single rule that forbade or even discouraged posting to a thread beyond a certain age. Many forums, city-data for example, have many threads which have been ongoing for many years and nobody has a problem with it. Those forums that do prefer threads of a certain age not be continued have mechanisms to lock or otherwise archive threads after a few months, but the administrators of macrumors appear to have chosen not to do so; this issue with older threads seems to be a matter of your individual capricious pedantry, nothing more.

Indeed. And the thread is still relevant to whomever finds it on a google search. If the subject doesn't apply to you, scroll past.

Back to the point....
Upgrading an appliance that works just fine for what it was purchased for, because a component manufacturer came in and removed a component seems stupid. Having an API is fine, stopping support for an API is fine, but removing an API 'because we can' isn't. So the EPA comes and drains the coolant out of your old fridge because we've moved on past the old freon formula? Its a device that worked. The API changed but the app that drove YouTube wasn't technically possible to be updated the new API? Really? I'm not buying that.

ATC Gen 2's Old !! I still want to use my ATV 1 ..Nothing wrong with it works perfectly . Just greedy corporate bastards that is all it is.

And the bloke saying who still uses 5 year old tech!! you've got too much money tot burn mate!

But not just Apple , all these big companies are at it. out to screw us. surprised it is even legal , surprised no one ever in America has ever treid to claim damages against these companies for basically extortion / blackmail. Buy a device from us then although it works perfectly we will shut it down make it usless and you will have to buy a new one . A licence to print money

Sonos just as bad, have spent the last three days doing all sorts of stuff/ hacks 2 facto autho, new accounts etc etc etc .

Bloody nbastards... I'd jsut feel like goign to the store and ...grrrrr dont know what....probably get arrested though !!
