I watched a Youtube 4K video at 60fps on my old AppleTV 4K (2017) to confirm it could right before I plugged in my new AppleTV 4K (2021). So doesn't seem exclusive to the new box to me.

edit: I was incorrect and looked past the higher resolution.

Anyone able to confirm that it finally plays 4k video from the Mac Photos app in actual 4k instead of downscaling like it always has? It's crazy that it's taken this long to play video iPhones could create since 2015!

Since the latest update of the Youtube App, auto play has been turned on and does not want to turn off! I flipped the switch back and forth in the settings, it still autoplays! anyone else experiencing this issue?

YouTube need to put some more effort into Apple TV app. add support for content matching.. so on.. also UI is older looking compared to LG TV..

To be honest shame no tv come with a Apple TV build into it as its a much better UI and longer updates.. LG stops supporting there tvs after a year !

Yup. Some knuckle head in here bought the new one because of this. Having the previous one as well.

Remember, it was only a few years ago that ISP's put forward the notion of a two tier internet because the ISP's were complaining that the networking infrastructure was becoming saturated with heavy demand on network traffic due to an increase in online gaming and high quality video streams (4k was not around then). If ISP's were complaining back then that the infrastructure was struggling, how much do you think they are going to complain due to the increase in 4k video streams.

ISP's will increase their prices and they will use the increase in 4k video streaming as their reasoning.
Meanwhile, back in the real-world we all just lived through a pandemic lockdown where everyone was stuck at home and internet streaming sky rocketed. Despite the sudden increase in demand caused by the lockdown, the ISPs actually dropped their data caps during it and in the process proved that they've been lying about data caps being needed for network stability, and that they are really just a monopolistic strategy to bilk their customers.

HDMI 2.0A and B can actually play 4K 60. But you still need a CPU that's capable. Guess the A10X was not capable. So don't have to have HDMI 2.1 for this. But for HDR that is 120 you need HDMI 2.1.

I cannot get HDR to work on the YouTube app with my 2017 ATV 4K. Other movie apps it works fine.

YouTube app still does not auto switch. So you have to set your Apple TV to output HDR before you go into the YouTube app. The problem with that of course is that when watching a non-HDR video in YouTube it’s not going to look right. YouTube need to pull their finger out!

Got it. Thanks

did you check quality setting in YouTube after starting the video? every time I did, it was playing at 1440p maximum for 60fps. but 2160p or 4k in 30fps was fine.

Who buys Apple TV when a)virtually every modern TV comes with all of the major streaming apps (and in many cases AirPlay support) and b) you can get a fire stick or Roku for a fraction of the price?

I gave my old Apple TV to my parents when I bought my new smart TV. I ordered the new Apple TV as soon as it was announced since the ads and notifications popping up on the kable channels are driving me crazy. They block an entire corner of the picture with messages like "press red to learn more about this show" and "press ok to allow tracking or go to settings to disable it". Sick of all the tracking and ads. First thing I will do when I get the new Apple TV is disconnect my TV from the internet and run everything thru the Apple TV.

4K60 non-HDR is old that even a $30 Fire TV Stick 4K can do. How about 8K60 HDR VP9 and AV1? And, does it have a browser yet?

It does not support HDR. Please turn on stats for nerds before any speculating. You will find the color is still bt.709.

correct me if I'm wrong... but to me this doesn't mean it doesn't support HDR... but more like it doesn't support switching format (everything will be upscaled or downscaled to your selected mode).
Even if you selected the HDR system interface, if you turn on stats for nerds in your YouTube App, you will find out the color space is still bt.709 => which is SDR.

Leave it to Apple to not give you your full 60Hz. :)
My suspicion is that tge clip shiwn it the tweet was some kind of £k hdr version of ntsc( us broadcast) iirc they usedthat strange frameraye due to backwards compatebility with b/w tv ( way back in the analog days, wow some things never change). I supect tgst if the sorce was a 4k/60 fps came capture you would see the expected 60.0 fps
