To whomever has an AppleTV; does this update bring any other functionality or features? Possibly a setting to change aspect ratio to 4:3 (i wish!)? Thanks.

I just downloaded it and the YouTube works. I really am hoping for Surround Sound Decoding of AAC 5.1.

How do we find out about any other features?

Wow, two announcments in so short a time. Maybe they're doing an announcment a day until the release. lol, wouldn't that be amazing...

I agree, thr addition of youtube is disappointing. If you want it, just bookmark the website in safari. I was hoping for something useful.

I think arcanic was just talking about the icon design.

However, you can't view the standard youtube site in iphone's safari because it doesn't support the flash plugin at this time. This youtube app would make use of the new h.264 enoding of the youtube library, which the site doesn't (at this time).

Gmail would be nice on the iPhone.
It works (emphasis mine):
iPhone is the first phone to come with a desktop-class email application. So now your phone can display rich HTML email with graphics and photos alongside the text. iPhone will even fetch your latest email every time you open the application and automatically retrieve your email on a set schedule, just like a computer does. iPhone works with the most popular email systems — including Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL, and .Mac Mail. If you’re not already using one of these services, now would be a great time to get an account. iTunes will make email setup on iPhone a breeze by automatically syncing the settings from email accounts stored in Mail on a Mac or Outlook on a PC. Don’t worry if you’re not on one of these email services; iPhone also works with almost any industry-standard POP3 and IMAP email system.

iPhone doesn't have flash, so it needs an app to work

I suppose everyone pretty much already knew youtube would be on the iphone, but I guess now its official. And it says it will available by a built-in app, like apple tv. So this must fill that ugly blank spot.

I had a DREAM about this phone last night. I had a dream that one day, people of all nationalities would stand in line in unity to get an iPhone. I may not be there with you on the 29th, but now that theres YouTube on it, I will buy one.

joking

Seriously, this seals the deal for me. Plus I heard that v2 won't be out for quite a while. I am so impressed, I can't WAIT!!!

now if i can just get my stupid Apple TV to work. the freakin thing quit outputting video last week. time to visit the apple store.

I guess this is cool. I rarely watch YouTube content, mostly if it is from a link in here somewhere. I would rather see them start offering HD content, but I can see how increased file size is a possible issue for iTS downloads.

I'm impressed. I have been disappointed but what device doesn't disappoint. They seem in tuned with their consumers.

please please let this be the death blow to flash!

This won't kill flash. Its too useful. I agree it is over-used sometimes, but it is great when used correctly.

I am going to miss flash when I go to sports websites and such. You can watch play by play in flash with MLB Live. I won't be able to do that now on the iPhone.

At least we know what that missing app icon is now...

The hits just keep on coming!

Will AAPL stock jump another 3 points on this "dramatic" news?

When were all the "high technology" quicktime tours updated too? these are a lot better to watch than the old ones.

I'm glad they finally filled the 12th spot so that people will not have to wonder any more what killer app might be introduced the day of the launch.;)

Wow, check out the updated iPhone page. Tons of videos, and click on the buttons on the top (the green, orange, blue and the 2 ones on the right) for even more. I love how they explain multi-touch :)

And they're using 2 white spots (thumbs I suppose) for typing now. Unlike the keynotes, where the index finger was used alone... like old people using a TV remote. :)

Gee, Apple cant win. First people moan that web 'applications' arent good enough because they dont offer the full iPhone experience, and yet Apple are adding applications and people moan because we can just access YouTube via the browser (which you cant anyway)

Whatever way you look at it, this is GOOD news. Look how it takes advantage of the iPhones 4 touch buttons above the Home button etc. Native iPhone apps that integrate with websites is exactly why I am excited about the phone. While its a shame this is limited to Apple at the moment, anything like this is a welcome feature. I would personally shed tears if we were to see a Gmail and Google Reader client :D

yeah some of the demos have been updated i think... i think they used a dfiferent U2 song but the same Coldplay song on the ipod demo....

they just keep building the anticipation up...i can't take it....

As if YouTube doesn't suck up enough of my time while I'm at work and at home, now it can command my attention while I'm driving.....yep, that's exactly what I need.

Are they encoding the originals(not the .flv files) into h.264? If so will so of the higher quality stuff actually look better?
