This is frustrating.

I would buy an iPhone the day it came out, but the fact that it doesn't have iChat, or a faster connection, or any way to atleast preview word/excel/Powerpoint files makes me feel like its not worth it. And that people cant develop for it.

Also, its becoming apparent they are marketing this to a younger generation, why then is there a built in stock widget? Can you remove this?

I feel like a lot of the things on the iPhone is apple telling us what to want instead of giving us what we want.

I think with 2Gen, if they added 3G, iChat (along with that technology where the whole screen was used to record video) and Video Chat, A new "Home Screen" that wasn't just black with all the icons, (the phone screen would be the same as the "locked" and "phone call" screen, just with nothing over your background, and could have the same bottom 4 icons, The home button could be used such as, tap it to go home, hold it down for 1 second to go to Applications screen" or something like that, a more unified color sceme ( some areas have the light blue fades, and other black) and then a very secure SDK that you had to go get approval through apple, so apple can stop being scared about a widget blowing up the iPhone. then I'd be very happy

The new(?) mail video for the iPhone shows some suggestions for words while typing. I'm not sure, has this has been shown before?

Meeti (while typing Meeting) shows a little Meets underneath it, and Se had a suggestion of We, etc.

Power consumption! I knew it. Flash on my MacBook, iMac and PowerMac at work, all suck for watching video.. it skips, scrolls horribly and doesn't always start and stop when paused. Yet, Apple could have included Flash lite, which was developed for handhelds.

Just to note, I am not a Flash hater, I do develop with Flash but since Flash 5, the high point in my opinion, Flash has gone down hill in performance. I say bring on the alternatives! Someone needs to develop an open source solution to what Flash does. I know of Java like solutions but I bet Apple didn't include Java also due to power consumption.

Yah the camera (13th), solitare/chess (14th), and the widget manager (15th) ;)

K, now all I need flash for is alluc and Badgers!

Camera's already there, it's the top right icon:

I wonder if this will lead to the further ruining of Youtube? I'm glad to see it on my Atv, however when Viacom bought Youtube there was already outcries for all the Copyrighted Content up there. They started Yanking Daily Shows and Other Clips. Now that Apple is involved do you really think they'll be allowing episodes of the Family Guy and others online. I highly Doubt it.

I wonder if youtube will have a spot right under 'video' somewhere in frontrow now...

This definitely puts the final nail in the coffin for many corporate folks trying to get one for work. (If the recent WSJ articles weren't already bad enough). You mean it can't natively connect to Exchange of Crackberry servers, but it can watch YouTube? Sure, I'll buy 10 for the company. Not.

It is a bit of a shame that Apple decided to go entertainment phone instead of smartphone. Maybe they'll introduce an iPhone Pro further down the line....

If Apple was trying to make a Smartphone, they failed long ago. This is a different type of phone, it doesn't fit in the current groups of phones. The closet thing I'd compare it to is the sidekick. However even that isn't it.

Dumb question

I know I'll get crushed for not knowing this, or even asking it...but does the iphone have a speaker phone...if yes...can I play music through its speakers....if yes...does it have airtunes?

I think of it (not having actually seen one, of course, but that doesn't seem to stop people) as an entertainment/communications device. More of an extension of the iPod than a smartphone.

  1. Yes, the iPhone has speaker phone
  2. Yes you can play music through it, but it will probably not sound too great
  3. AirTunes? You mean can it stream music from your computer like Airport Express's AirTunes? If so, I don't think so.

YES! This is HUGE. I don't think people appreciate the "killerness" of this App.

I predicted this right (along with a few others) and think this is a big deal since you can now watch movies, tv shows and a whole lot of content without filling up the memory of the device.

1) Why do you need iChat? Use online apps. There are TONS of IM clients. Quit blaming Apple because of your ignorance. www.iphonefanclub.com

2)Word/excel/powerpoint: Again, online apps. docs.google.com. And seriously, how much powerpoint editing are you going to do on a phone???

3)People can't develop for it??? I know the online apps are a weak solution, but online apps still qualify as developed apps. www.iphonefanclub.com

Targeting a younger generation? How many 13 year olds do you know that have $600 bucks to drop on a phone? The target is 20's to 30's who have money, which would make the stock widget useful.

You go ahead and develop that technology.

A new "Home Screen" that wasn't just black with all the icons

Look at the Randall Stevenson speech. Your wallpaper can be seen in the background faintly, which I'm sure will be a setting on the phone.

Wow....is that all it takes to make you happy

I wonder how much the iPhone would cost without the phone? I'll definitely take one. :D

Thanks for the quick reply and sorry for being off topic.

I was wondering about the airtunes (like the airport) just because I was thinking what if I'm at home playing music through my house via airtunes...but I go outside to the patio for dinner...can I stream through the phone...I guess not...it is a ridiculous request I'm sure.

Thanks for your help

Cool cool cool!

I am not a big youtube fan, but I like the expansion it gives to the :apple: TV and to my iPhone I will be getting in under two weeks:D

please please let this be the death blow to flash!

Flash has been getting so much hate lately... i can understand why, with every annoying internet ad banner now being deployed in Flash... but flash is very important... lots of very strong internet sites use Flash...

also, i don't buy Apple being all "oh, Flash drains batteries more than H.264"... pfff... yeah ok steve, whatever... seems to me that some backroom politics between Adobe and Apple went very very bad...

Ding Ding!!

Exactly.

I think that apple has a clear strategy here : they dont want the iPhone to be a smartphone for busines.
They want to cater first the younger generation to make the product "hip", raise the status, visibility and to test the platform.

Then, after, say 1 year, they can start to move over to the corporate market when the hardware and software have enough miles under the belt.
Meanwhile they can continue to test all the neccessary applications/hw that the businesworld requires.

Putting a underperforming product to corporate markets would tank the whole iPhone concept for good.
Leisure/civilian market is more forgiving. Apart form some whining on internet forums and maybe a article or two in the magazines, the bad hype could be contained more easily.

My .02 pesos.

Can't you watch Youtube on any device?

I don't see what the big deal is...

Go to m.youtube.com and you will have the mobile version of it.

This was not the "killer app" (as many of you have already mentioned) that we were hoping for. :(

I think of it (not having actually seen one, of course, but that doesn't seem to stop people) as an entertainment/communications device. More of an extension of the iPod than a smartphone.

It's the evolution of the handheld do-it-all for the average Joe. It's simple to use and not too geeky. Ask around non-techies, they all want the iPhone. I think it's annoying having to carry around so much stuff all the time: my wallet, iPod (nano), phone, keys (camera, knife, pepperspray, handgun, etc... :p ), it's getting crowded in my pockets. The nano is either in the chance pocket of my jeans/pants or in my wallet (fits in there nicely, see picture) but the earbuds are always in the way...

Phones have tried to have cameras and music players incorporated, but usually not well done so people get iPods in addition to the "music phone". I don't expect the iPhone to replace my camera that I usually have in my pocket (Canon Powershot SD630. Cool hardware, mediocre optics). But it could very well replace my iPod nano. And I wouldn't miss calls when listening to music anymore.

Now add a swiss knife and an electrical razor in there and you got the ultimate business class airplane companion :D
