Are they encoding the originals(not the .flv files) into h.264? If so will so of the higher quality stuff actually look better?

I guess it depends on two factors

1) whether YouTube keeps the original uploaded video from which to transcode to H.264. If they are transcoding from the converted Flash files, then the quality will be as attrocious on your Apple TV. On an iPhone however, id guess YouTube looks pretty decent.

2) the original quality of the source video. A big reason why so many YouTube clips are crap is because they were taken with mobile phones or webcams. I have actually seen some excellent quality stuff on YouTube. Put $h1t in you get $h1t out.

On a more general note, I wonder how strong a draw Youtube will be for the iPhone's intended market. For example, folks who are a bit older and have been working longer can afford the iPhone, but probably won't find having "10,000 amateur BMX videos in your pocket" all that exciting.

sounds great..

sounds really good. but whenever i go to the iphone page, since the update today, on both safari and firefox, if i try to play a video it brings up a message saying please download quicktime...but im on a mac and i definately have quicktime...help me? anyone?

Do other QT sites work? What about Apple Trailers?

This definitely puts the final nail in the coffin for many corporate folks trying to get one for work. (If the recent WSJ articles weren't already bad enough). You mean it can't natively connect to Exchange of Crackberry servers, but it can watch YouTube? Sure, I'll buy 10 for the company. Not.

It is a bit of a shame that Apple decided to go entertainment phone instead of smartphone. Maybe they'll introduce an iPhone Pro further down the line....

And let's not forget what I use YouTube for at work - pick a song you want to hear, any song, and someone somewhere on youtube has cut together scenes from Gilmore Girls/Heroes/Lost/Veronica Mars and made a music video with it. Plus, there are tons of music videos on YouTube. So, really, YouTube on the iPhone = streaming music on demand.

I compress my youtube videos to H.264 so they're just below the limit in size (50 MB I think right now). I usually use the original resolution if it doesn't exceed 640 x 480. The quality can be great indeed, but it takes about an hour to compress a five minute clip on normal hardware. Youtube converts it all to crappy flash, I wonder if they will do any recompressing on original H.264 videos tho.

Just downloaded the upgrade for AppleTV

Not a big fan of youtube video, but they do look good on a 65" 1080i Pioneer Elite. Given how videos I have looked at on youtube tend to be somewhat blocky, they must be re-encoding from "master" uploads that are higher quality.

A few other notes:
This update doesn't appear to bring 5.1. I checked the trailers and itunes movie previews and still only got Dolby ProLogic II decoding

I notice minor cosmetic changes in the interface. For example, we have 2 Macs with media. Formerly the menu on which you choose which Mac had no spaces between rows. Now there are some blank spaces between the Mac entries.

Unlike the "photos" option, YouTube does carry through when you are synched to one of your Mac media libraries. In other words, you don't have to go back to AppleTV main menu to access YouTube. I wish they would make the "photos" option do this too, so that there would be little reason to go back up to the AppleTV main menu (OR make all of the media on whichever computer is most recently selected ALSO available in the AppleTV main menu settings)

The YouTube options seem to be pretty fluid. But the search option seems a bit slow when you are entering text. It seems to be doing searches as you enter each letter, but this seems to create a short delay in how fast you can choose and enter the next letter.

YouTube video seems to begin downloading and starts to play quickly (while downloading) on my broadband connection. In other words, the system doesn't wait for the whole video to download first. I only looked at a few videos, but I didn't see any bandwith hangups.

The AppleTV software update was kind of strange to watch. The Apple logo appeared and disappeared what seemed like about 8 times. White Apple logo, then black screen. Also the system seemed to flip from my settings (1080i) to what I guessed to be the minimum (480p) several times. Then, there is a progress bar under the Apple logo. After it appears to be done, this resolution and Apple logo-to-black sequence goes a few more times. I started to think maybe one long all black screen sequence at the end meant some kind of update failure, but then it all came back up with all original settings in place. It played the original video played when first installed (hundreds of screens turning into white glowing orbs falling into the appleTV box), and then everything was back to "normal".

I couldn't tell by looking if any picture quality enhancements were in this upgrade. My guess is "no".

Nothing appears to be done in terms of organizing movies in folders. Yes this works for "tv shows" but it appears that it still doesn't work for movies.

Overall, nice to have the extra feature whether I watch much of it or not. I suppose free amateur video on demand is better than no such option.

any new app is a plus, so this is great! however, the low battery cop out being the excuse for no flash? apple could've kept that. oh well, 9 more days :D

What about the excuse that it's not powerful enough to play flash? I'm still trying to find a smartphone that does play flash. Do you know of one?

Well, the YouTube update seems to be working fine though I'm a little disappointed they still haven't fixed the Season grouping. I have 7 seasons of Seinfeld and they show up in a big, reverse-sorted list.

Even my two-year old iPod can group shows into seasons. With the 160GB :apple:TV out, it seems like it would have been an obvious thing to fix.

Yay, my first post and not a moment too soon.

Here's hoping that the integrated camera on the iPhone has video recording capability and that we would be able to upload clips right into YouTube from your iPhone!

Now, wouldn't that be a great feature to include!

Keep trickling and teasing us until the release, Apple. You're doing fine, just make sure you have enough for me to get one at launch day. :)

1. Run Software Update

2. Enable Quicktime Streaming. I know it can be disabled, but I dunno where... Look in either your browsers or Quicktime itself.

YouTube on :apple:TV? Fun, I guess. I'll go update my :apple:TV right now.

YouTube on the iPhone? Fun, I guess. But I can't buy a 600$CAD+ phone and I can't have Rogers as my cellphone provider.

YouTube converting to H.264? This is serious news. Makes Flash video look weak in comparison (because of the low-bitrate they've been using on YouTube). I hope this marks the beginning of the end for crappy-looking videos (apart from the content itself). ;)

And it further strengthen H.264 as the video standard. This is excellent news indeed.

On the whole Flash issue, it occurs to me that if the iPhone does for the mobile industry what the iPod did for the music industry (and Youtube integration could be an entry point for this), other sites might start encoding their video content as H.264. CNN, MLB, etc. That THAT would be fantastic, a real iPhone "ecosystem" of content, with the icon space on the front of the iPhone becoming valuable real estate for content providers. Hmmm, maybe I was wrong before (see previous snarky comment about YouTube).

Oh, no, am I getting sucked in by the RDF?

Hmmmmmmmmmm there is also now an option to select your itunes store location ie: Australia, US etc. I wonder what that means ??. Maybe we will soon be putting in our account details to order music and vids online ?.

You tube loads fast and yeah, overall im pretty impressed. The vids look ok. Not as bad as I thought they might be.

Hmm, it sure would be necessary to compress the video before sending it. Preferably in H.264. It already takes an hour for a 5 minute clip on my Macbook, I don't know if the iPhone can handle it. On the other side, they could use a fixed preset and have a hardware encoder (google Elgato Turbo). Uploading videos should be a major PITA on GSM... :p

I doubt Apple out a hardware encoder in the iPhone. But who knows, some third party (Elgato?) might go ahead and accessorize. :)

A shame for who? Perhaps you but not for Apple. There are 8m BlackBerrys out there. There are 100m iPods. So tell me do you target the consumer or the corporate buyer?

please please let this be the death blow to flash!

Yeah, now you only have to have all the web people, and advertising people and game making people abandon it. Flash is not only youtube, seriously. Lack of flash on iPhone will still mean that a lot of web pages just simply will not work.

Well said, all those business people look at the iPhone and all they see is a smart phone, "A smart phone, well that must mean it's made for me. Now, where is this and that, and I want this and... bla bla bla bla".

WOW

I really love the new Apple.com webpage regarding iPhone.

I think it is superbly done. Very informative and beautifully presented.

Nice job, Apple!

I ve been watching a lot of youtube recently to see Britains Got Talent. You have to watch the opera guy and connie

I'm hoping for the Google Office Apps. Using a web based word processor really makes sense for a phone and then get to your home or office PC (or mac) and download it into real Word to edit.

Iv'e also hated flash when I see a web page that says download flash I move on or skip intro.

On the apple site the maps demo seems to put paid any hopes of GPS or triangulation-unfortunately.
