YouTube Premium Subscribers Can Now Use iOS Picture-in-Picture: Here's How

Reporting from Mexico. It works!!!. It took about 10 minutes to “sync” I guess to the App, but now it is working!. I did nothing on the app, I looked for the setting after activating in on the web site, but the setting was not on the app for me, but anyway, automatically worked after some minutes of testing!!

It will be in the future. This is just the initial rollout for Premium subscribers.

YouTube has plans to roll out the feature to all users, including those who are not paying for Premium. This is currently a test that Premium users can opt in to to test it.

I don’t use the app, but PiP works just fine from safari without premium.

It doesn’t on iOS. It opens in PiP then shoots the video back into the web view.

It is available in both the iOS app and the browser. I have been using it for months… unless I was one of the chosen to test the feature.

Also, Dark Mode has been available for iPad and iPhone for over a year now.

Dark Mode is available — but it does not automatically switch the phone's settings like every other app.

Just bake it into the app Google. Jump through all these hoops and it doesn’t work instantly.

Screw youtube. If you watch using Brave Browser on iOS or iPadOS you get pip for free.

I fail to understand how this is not a feature for YouTubeTV which costs around $70 a month.

This 100%. It's the only thing keeping me from jumping over from my AT&T TV Now grandfathered plan.

Let’s face it, the YouTube app for iOS/iPadOS is garbage from a UI/UX point of view. It’s a horrible mix of iOS Human Interface Guidelines and Material Design. From missing OS features like Picture in Picture to the awkward gesture support to the piss-poor layout. By all means, implement your brand with your typeface, colour scheme etc but don’t ignore fundamental OS features and UI guidelines for the sake of being stubborn.

The PiP feature of YouTube Premium has not been available in Vietnam yet, although I enrolled in the beta program.

In other words - Google failed to coerce enough people to pay $60+ a month for a ‘feature’ that is widely available for free for any developer to use as part of iOS /MacOS.
So now they are ‘generously’ including - again a free feature already used by numerous other apps and built in to operating system - as part of their app.

I don’t see the button to do it like other apps. But it does switch to PiP automatically when i switch apps when the YouTube video is full screen. Doesn’t seem to work if it’s not full screen.

Wow, so it's not even the app limitation. It's literally Google putting such artificial limit via your youtube account setting on their server.
Turning it on right away, and it works, as it should've been in the first place.

It's also insane how neither the iOS or iPadOS apps support system settings dark mode. For me, anyway. I hate how Google designs their software features and general rollouts.

Yep, I now have PiP working on the app after reading this article... long overdue, and already found it very useful for the last couple of hours.
