iOS for iPad has had this for years and years, since iOS 9. It came to iOS for iPhone with iOS 14. It was available earlier than iOS 14 for iPhone for video in the Facebook app, also.
Still came out on android devices before the ipad. First came out on Samsung phones in 2012.

Great. Happy for you. It officially came to Android OS in 2017 with Android “O”. IOS 9 came out in 2015.

After a long wait, YouTube for iOS is officially gaining picture-in-picture support, allowing all users, non-premium and premium subscribers, to close the YouTube app and continue watching their video in a small pop-up window.

In a statement to MacRumors, YouTube says that picture-in-picture is currently rolling out to all premium subscribers on iOS and that a larger rollout to all US iOS users will take place soon. It's worth noting, again, that this feature will be available to all users, despite some speculation that YouTube may have limited picture-in-picture support for only paying subscribers.
YouTube picture-in-picture has been a constant back and forth game, with it sometimes working via the YouTube website on Safari. Some users have found creative workarounds utilizing Shortcuts to turn off built-in parameters on the YouTube site that disables picture-in-picture. Now, though, with official support rolling out and soon to be more widespread, those workarounds will no longer be needed.

Oh boy. Now I can watch those annoying ads while I'm trying to do something else. Thanks Youtube.

I’ve been using the shortcut since YouTube decided to block PiP. Is an extra step but I can browse other pages, play games while I listen. Also great that I’m can to turn the screen off, save battery and still listen to the podcast or video on YouTube. Especially great for the night or an asmr video :p

annoying ads? What are those. My friend if you haven’t use Ad block extensions for safari I feel bad.

bc i know that when I upgrade my phone or use a computer that’s not mine, it’s a pain to watch any video. One has to watch an ad before you can watch anything you want. Or at the middle of the video. Worst are those videos divided into more than 10 parts. Every part is an ad break. Also annoying having a wallpaper of ads on every page.

so I recommend you get an ad block for safari.

I don't really mind,, what Youtube implements, just give the option to NOT allow picture-in-picture

I don’t think they will make this available worldwide. Nobody cares about small countries, even located in the EU - after more than 6 months Apple Music is not available for Google assistant in my country. Why? We all pay for these services. Why some users get more for their money? They (Apple, Google, Amazon) just make us feel like a third world country - traveling for example to Germany to activate ECG functionality for the Apple Watch, making a fake US Apple ID just to get the google assistant app.

Any other app that‘d monetize PiP functionality would probably get pulled from the store in an instant. Apple explicitly prohibits monetizing native iOS features like Notifications or PiP, although they make exceptions for that 24/7 when it fits their agenda.

I just hope one day hell rains down on Apple for their „every developer is treated the same“ token lie they boast 24/7. The Apple developer agreement is one gigantic joke, full of contradictions and exception rules to please the top 1% of their ecosystem (Netflix, Amazon etc).

I just double checked and this definitely still works for me. It takes 3 seconds to run, presumably as it waits for the first statement to finish. After that just swipe up and it should go into PiP.
Unfortunately I get the same error, "Run JavaScript on Web Page failed because Shortcuts couldn't convert from URL to Safari web page."
For the shorter delay, try to modify the Shortcut's setTimeout from 3000 to 1000 (milisecond, I guess) and check if that works for you.
Edit: Ok, I'm just stupid. I haven't used the shortcut in a long time, and I eventually forgot you have to use Safari's own bottom share button, not share button inside Youtube App to make it work. I can also confirm lowering the default delay value may freeze Safari or just do nothing (found 2000 to be pretty reliable).
Yours is much less complicated, I like it. Youtube PiP v3 I got used 11 actions and Scriptable, I couldn't make it work again.

For all the talk of Apple treating developers unfairly, this is one of many times when I wished that Apple would be more heavy-handed in forcing developers to update their apps with features like split-screen and PIP. If anything, I will say that Apple isn’t coming down on developers hard enough!

If only you could have a program like YouTube Vanced to bypass Google's stupid paywalled features and decisions like this one. Maybe when hell freezes over and Apple allows side-loading apps.

Thanks YT, loyal premium subscriber here, from 1 of the many countries that make up the world that is not the USA, who will not enjoy PIP, even paying. There are other ways to enjoy no-ads, if I am no going to get features by your discrimination, is ok, you will not get my money either.

Is it me or does this actually make Google look bad?

Why would you not have something as simple as picture-in-picture at least five years ago?
Google has been known to be late to implement features.. it took them awhile to do SplitView/SlideOver for Gmail.

But implementing PiP is a problem on iOS/iPadOS because it’s a feature designated for YT premium subscribers on Android.

Has anyone actually gotten this to work?
Yeah, I just got the app update today and I can't get it to work. There's no UI update, and the method I've seen suggested (just try to exit and the video will keep playing in PiP) doesn't work.

I'm really curious if anyone has gotten it to work, and if they could share a screen video of it in action.

It was working on the first day. The next day completely disappeared. Premium user from Brazil.

There’s no secret method behind it. It’s a server side update on Google part, which I call BS… Apple needs to step in on this situation.

Either Google needs do it through an App Store update or don’t do it at all.
