Just noticed YouTube has pushed an update on the Apple TV app with a “5.1 surround” button but it’s not working on my Apple TV. Did any of you check?

I still see only 2.06.22.00 - June 13, 2021 YouTube app on tvOS via App Store. How about a photo of this?
They don’t necessarily need to update the actual app itself as an App Store update, they can just push certain functions to the existing app version.
They did the same recently with the new press and hold function that gives further options on the thumbnails.
I haven’t checked mine for this 5.1 button yet, but will be doing so when I finish work.

That’s correct. For the past several months they’ve been pushing “silent” updates. I believe the update I mentioned is the same one that introduced the press and hold feature.

I must say though I’ve not seen any sign of the 5.1 button you speak of.

I did not see any buttons, but I played A video by movie music composer, Hans Zimmer, doing a live version of a portion of the Dune soundtrack. Fantastic clip, by the way. My AVR indicated that the video was playing Dolby surround and there was music coming out of my rear speakers. It wasn’t particularly mixed for surround sound, but it was playing surround sound. So maybe YouTube did push out an update.

Can you share the link to that clip, please?
To the best of my knowledge, YouTube does only sport low-bitrate stereo audio, so surround would be a surprise.
Are you sure, your AVR was not simply set to Dolby Surround mode (meaning it was running a Dolby upmixer on stereo source)??

That’s quite interesting as the only time I see any mention of Dolby on mine is when I play something with Atmos, any other and it just displays as being PCM unless I physically change the sound output to Dolby rather than Auto for Atmos.
Seems a bit odd how you’re seeing it when using YouTube.

This is the link I played through my ATV 4K that came through as Dolby. I had to change the quality to 1080P manually but it showed as DD Surround.

When I play this video it’s not showing the 5.1 surround button so I don’t believe this video has surround sound.

By the way, this is the button I’m talking about and the app version section says I’m on version 2.06.22.00/web_20220320_10_RC00
So apparently a release canditate version from March 20th

I’ve not seen that button on anything I’ve tried.
Hopefully 5.1 is going to be an option.

They must be definitely be doing something with the app as just noticed some of my movies are now showing a 4K icon, and this is via my ATVHD in my bedroom.
Not able to check my ATV4K at the moment.

Edit:
Just tried playback of some movies showing as 4K and the max resolution is still 1080p.
Am also seeing the 5.1 toggle but doesn’t seem to do anything.
This is using the 1st Gen.

Unless you are referring to a paid YouTube service (like YouTube TV), then on the free YT, this video only has low bitrate stereo soundtracks, like every other YT video (on free service):

Does it make a difference that I am a premium subscriber? But I will take your word for it. All I know is the display showed D Surround and I had sound coming out of my rear speakers. As I said it might now have been true surround but a virtual 4 channel stereo.

Actually, they push an update about once a week remotely. This is nothing new. You can see the build date in the app's settings under "App version" (look at the date in the version number).

I can confirm that 5.1 is indeed available on some video content, although the volume level compared to the stereo track is very low.

Here's video proof:

And this is the video I was watching:

Dolby Surround is not from a 5.1 source. It is upmixed stereo. If you're using a Denon AVR, press the info button and it will show you on the left which channels are being received from the source, and on the right which channels are being output.

Yes, it looks like there are changes happening.
New audio formats that I can recognise are the 256, 380, 328 and 258
The YT app on my appleTV receives nicely the EC-3 stream.

Tried this video out on ATV4K tvOS 15 as well as the Android YouTube app on my Sony Bravia (connected to my AVR). Not seeing any signs of 5.1 here...

To be clear, YouTube 5.1 is for their YouTube TV subscription service. I haven't heard any chatter about 5.1 being enabled for standard YouTube user content. Correct me if I'm wrong...
