This UI for 5.1 is not new. It was changed several weeks ago.
Could be. Haven't paid attention to that.
With some videos it allows toggling on/off. With some others it doesn’t. Regardless, they are not playing as 5.1 audio.
For some weird reason - I do get 5.1. And this time surround speakers are not silent either.
Here the signal info from my AVR:

Is it still 5.1 now? On my end it doesn’t even show the option on that video

:) I am just blind..I did not check this thread and opened another thread on this topic.

so new gen4k box also does not play YouTube with surround sound. Am I correct?

any android box does have this feature?

I have the old 4K and it plays surround, if you know for sure, the track has it.
Many, many uploads do not contain any surround sound, despite the description.
YouTube only has had low bitrate stereo audio historically.
Now, with their paid TV service, it would be hard to sell without supporting surround sound.
We are discussing here the (subscription)free YouTube service.
I have no explanation, why has it sporadically appeared on some videos, that now seem to have surround audio track attached to them. And whether its accessibility via free service is intentional or not.

It doesn’t appear related to Apple TV being 4K or not. Mine isn’t and a while ago it was playing YouTube in 5.1 surround (definitely not pro-logic). According to Google support pages (see a few posts back) YouTube on Apple TV supports surround sound but in reality it appears to be in beta/testing stage. Also, it doesn’t help that the Apple TV YouTube app is almost constantly updated sever-side so features can be enabled/disabled as they wish

I found a video from 10 years ago that gives me true 5.1 audio on my Apple TV 4K connected to an Onkyo receiver. The receiver reports multichannel 5.1 audio input. I’m YouTube Premium if that matters.

The volume is lower than with 5.1 toggled off though.

My setup shows input sound signal and output sound signal and I tried both links in the prior post (#58) expecting them to once again be illusions (implying 5.1 in the title but delivering stereo that is then pushed through prologic processing to fake surround). Instead, I can confirm that input is showing real DD 5.1. Hint: if you are similarly equipped and quick check, the commercials that run before it are stereo... WAIT for the actual video.

If you do the YouTube search on AppleTV 4K for the IMAX one second, several others in the resulting search choices are also 5.1: wakanda forever trailer, avatar trailer, etc.

This is with regular Youtube, not premium. No special settings choices necessary with latest AppleTV 4K- just play the video and it is in 5.1. 🎉

Someone start the "see pigs flying" or "hell freezes over" thread. ;)

This discussion is about YouTube, not YouTube TV. Although I did just check, and 5.1 is once again available on YouTube. At least for this video on my 2nd gen ATV4K. Volume is still exceedingly low through my AV receiver, though.

Yes, 5.1 sound has been restored for the YouTube app on Apple TV for weeks now. Are your or anyone’s purchased movies playing with 5.1 sound though? Mine still aren’t.

I appear to be getting 5.1 from this video, my receiver doesn’t report as such but I’m taking it that with the 5.1 button showing active and with the speaking parts not coming from the rears and also a different sound in the rears to what’s coming from the front as a good sign that it may be.

My receiver does report input and output sound signals and that Avatar trailer is showing as 5.1.

There seems to be many 5.1-encoded videos on there now.
It’s a shame that none of the movie’s in my library do, maybe one day they’ll implement it and hope along with 4K.
