I find it amusing that people are mad that they have to pay a fee, but yet are exposed to millions of users in which they might otherwise not be able to get to.

I could have an app with 10K subscribers or through Apple increase my customer base up to 100K which will cost me 15% but yet that's revenue I otherwise would not have had. Merchants pay VISA / transaction -- it's the same thing. A subscription is buying a product - each time you use the system there is a fee. Some people aren't thankful that they can have such opportunities.

You have choices, choose to participate, or not to. But if you do I would expect you to prosper. Cost of doing business.

So I should go setup my shop at the mall, tell customers go outside to pay and come back in, so that I don’t have to pay my landlord their rent because they charge based on your volume in their store? Wow. YouTube TV sucks.
Its probably one of the best online streaming services out there. I have been a subscriber since it was in Beta and haven't left because every time I go try a new one like Hulu Live TV, Fubo, PSVue they lack quality features like unlimited DVR. Can you recommend a better one?

What is PSVue's take on DVR now. I only liked them and YTTV because they had infinite capacity within the limited timeframe. Didn't like the limited capacity ones because it would always fill.

Shut down?!?! :'( It was my fav other than YTTV. Although I'm glad they are cutting back to specialize more. Too many JOATMONs in the world anymore. Specialize in your strengths and stop spreading yourself thin like too little butter on a piece of bread.

Wow, this is extremely idiotic of them. Netflix was smart enough to keep app store subscriptions active and just stop new signups, because they know that they'll lose millions of subscribers who are "passive", IE, they're not using the service but don't care that they're being billed.

I'm sure YouTube has plenty of these too; revenue with a 15% cut is better than no revenue at all!

You think that companies like YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix need Apple to get more subscribers? These are well established companies. Apple does not bring them new subscribers, new subscribers already know about them and just using the App to sign-up. I am sure YouTube has done much analysis and (a) knows how many users are currently paying through Apple and (b) has some idea how many users will NOT move to another payment method. YouTube must have decided any potenital losses will be offset by the increase in direct revenue.

Now this the equation is different for smaller companies. They certainly benefit form the exposure being featured in the App Store bring. But, Apple thinks a one size fits all model works for everyone.

It is just the smart thing to do, it is insane to give away 15% (sometimes 30%) cut of my business to a billing service. I guess people can still subscribe to the service and just log-in in their Apple device as usual.

P.D.: I do not use YouTube TV and I do not plan to subscribe.

I'd happily pay a 15% premium to keep my personal data personal.

Hahaha you are so innocent, you think because you pay 15% extra YouTube (or Apple) don't know anything about you.

Yeah they got shut down recently. Sucks to see services go under. Usually the more there are the lower the price has to be to make people want the service. Or they have to step up quality. Losing one like PSV isn't good for the market.

These companies do not need Apple's distribution nor billing services, they are well known and have to pay for very expensive infrastructure and royalties to be forced to pay 30% more on top of that.

Yeah people can subscribe through the site and just stay logged in on their Apple devices. Its not a big deal at all.

Does this mean I will stop seeing a popup asking me to subscribe to YouTube TV or Music every 5 minutes, and when ever I go out of the app for a second?

If so good.

You should submit your resume to Google for the CFO position since you obviously know about their subscriber base than they do?

I am always amazed that people think that companies haven't done this analysis on their own. YouTubeTV is very different from Netflix. It is meant to be a replacement for live tv. This is likely something an average user is going to use on a near daily basis (unlike Netflix, which some people only watch when specific shows are released.) Losing access to YouTubeTV may not be an option for many of the users affected, so they may be willing to change their payment method. Of course, there will be some users that won't move, but that is a calculated risk. It may be worth it to lose a small number of users than keep them on at lower income level.

Considering the likely cost of some of the channels in the line-up, it is very possible that YouTube was making little to no profit on user paying through Apple after the 15%/30% fee.

You hit the spot. It is a business decision and a very smart one.

It is kind of ridiculous that some people think companies like YouTube or Spotify would be unknown to the world if it wasn't for the App Store.

Apple disabled my app years ago and refused to allow any new builds until I implemented In App purchasing. I had been handling everything via PayPal. If YouTube can get away with not paying the Apple premium, then why should I have to?
that has never happened to me i have been a subscriber to Google products for along time. To bypass the Apple tax I subscribe on my computer directly with Google.

People will just stay signed up for the service just through the YouTube TV site and stay logged in on their Apple devices. You don't have to give up the service. Google was charging more for this on the App Store to make up the difference. Now anyone who wants the service and was on iOS will save 5 bucks a month.

When you pay rent, you get lots of stuff... like a space.

The cut that Apple takes for almost zero effort is borderline obscene or at least highway robbery. No wonder Apple has so much money.

DISCLAIMER - I am an Apple guy... Macbook, Ipad Pro, Iphone 11, Apple Watch... and AppleTV - though I lately moved over to Roku and prefer it.

Check pricing through Apple the cost is passed on to subscribers.

Source for this statement? As far as I know that would be against Apple's App Store policies. Unless something has changed, Apple required that In-App purchase be the same cost as purchases outside the App.
