And I bet you still can't watch all the stuff that's been recently removed from air that is 'non-pc'.
The world is turning into a George Orwell totalitarian state.....you must watch this, you can't watch that...... 🤪
Never done subscription streaming, never will.

Man, I remember when Direct TV NOW offered a free Apple TV 4k for pre paying 3 months @ $35.

What a deal!

I got that Deal then we were promised the price would stay the same for grandfathered accounts. 2 years later they raised it to $65 a month from $35 and I cancelled and went to Sling for $25 a month, for them to raise it to $30 a month a month later and put a lot of their channels into separate bundles sold separately. Better off paying $5 a month for Locast for all the local live TV channels and stick with the streaming services like Netflix. All these TV streaming services are only going up and up. I literally only pay for sling for 1 channel, NBC sports so I can watch the premier league.

Looking ahead... how much longer is this idea of scheduled linear programming gonna be a thing?

A long time ago there was literally an antenna in the middle of town that broadcast the same show at the same time to every house in town. That's how it was done because that's the only way it could be done. And cable TV still follows this model today.

But fast-forward a half-century and we're now all accustomed to On-Demand viewing of almost everything. TV shows are sitting on a server somewhere and we start watching when we want to. There is no schedule.

The idea of having to be at home at 8:30pm on a Tuesday to watch a certain show seems antiquated today.

Sure the DVR helps... but all that's doing is putting a band-aid on the problem of scheduled linear programming from decades ago.

Well, my current plan (after my Sling prepaid is over in November) is, Philo TV $20, Locast $5.00 (30 local broadcast channels in the Philadelphia area). Hulu $6 (to cover my addiction to FX shows). Which comes to about $35 with tax for most of my cable needs

That's cheaper than basic cable in my area by a long shot and comes with DVR on Philo.

I don't understand why they want $50 a month? Don't they make their money from annoying ads?

It's a move that cable and satellite providers make, only this increase exceeds their normal hikes. I've loved YTTV ever but I'm looking for alternatives now, for many of us cutting the cord was our way out of these sort of consumer rip-offs. Also, way to stick it to your subscribers in the middle of a pandemic.

I can’t believe someone would pay 50 for it. Oh wait. It is 65 now.
YouTube TV is great for live sports with DVR - but man, I don't remember paying $65/mo for sports channels ever.
Time to start reading books and using your imagination.
Then how do we justify buying $1000 phones and 60" TVs?

This isn't really surprising. The whole "cut the cord" concept was never going to work. Cable companies aren't stupid. They're not just going to let all that money walk out the door. A few years ago I tried dropping our TV service to just keep internet so I could get an internet TV service. However, because of the unbundling, it ended up costing basically the same as if I had just kept the original package as is. It's all one big jerkoff.

I have to laugh at people complaining on social media because ‘cutting the cord’ isn’t giving them something that was never promised and most likely will never happen: ala carte buying.

Well on the flipside, DirecTv wanted to start charging me $177/month for 2 TVs on the premium plan. I told them to pound sand over a year ago - tried Hulu but their app sucks, crashes, doesn't work and the guide is terrible for live TV. IMO youtube tv is the best of the streaming live tv services. Since switching I pay $49.99 for youtube live tv, $11 for showtime and $15 for HBO. So now it will be $64.99 + 11 + 15 = $91 - still much better than paying ATT $177.
