You can't replace it for content like sports and news.

You're correct about sports and news.

But most shows on TV are not sports and news.

Take a channel like HGTV. They have tons of different shows. They make a schedule and certain shows are broadcast at certain times.

But they can only broadcast one episode of one show in every 30-minute block. And everyone can only see that exact episode at that same time.

That just seems like a silly and inefficient way to deliver content today.

Man, I remember when Direct TV NOW offered a free Apple TV 4k for pre paying 3 months @ $35.

What a deal!

Yeah, and I still pay $35/month with HBO (HBOMAX now) and Showtime for free as long as I stay with AT&T TV NOW. I got grandfathered into what was once known as the "Go Big Plan." No idea why people left when they were eligible to be grandfathered in, but to each their own. I know the app was buggy at first, but I have not had issues in years.

$65/month for YouTube TV...yeah, no thanks. I'll save that $30/month for golf balls or something.

Edit: Sorry, I pay $40/month now, but you still cannot beat it.

:apple:

Why is this so expensive anyway? I mean, for $65 a month you can subscribe to pretty much all the major streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, HBO, Hulu, CBS) and watch pretty much everything.
Comes down to the live tv. Without that you can do reasonable well.

👏

This is the calculus the internet intelligencia ignores. Once you start paying for additional boxes and add-ons, Cable/Dish price is orders of magnitude (still) higher. And it's a superior service to Dish.

I'm a YoutubeTV subscriber and Dish refugee. I'm not happy about the increase. I'm not happy there are no tiers. But it is still better than the old life.

Not sure if it's ignores, as I only know a few people with cable TV in multiple rooms. Seems like most people have the box in the main room, and Roku's/Apple TV's in other rooms.

I do think there is a price where people will stop buying, and who will be the first person to flinch on price. You basically have 3-5 major content providers always wanting to increase their price to "Live TV provider". When Live TV is $100/month, people will just stop paying for it and the 3-5 content providers will need to lower their price.

We have to pay such high prices in the USA for TV if we don't want actors to starve to death.

It's sports that drive a lot of the price increases in cable TV and live streaming services like Hulu+ and YouTube TV as we see here.

I too used and enjoyed PS Vue until Sony cancelled it. Then as soon as I switched to Hulu Plus, they jacked the rate from $45/mo to $55/mo. I never considered YouTube TV since I'm not much of a Google fan and Hulu Plus has some very good exclusives, but now I really don't see so bad.

If I didn't watch the occasional sporting event, I would eschew live TV services completely and stick with the streamers.

I hope this and PSVue leaving altogether shows everyone finally that it’s not the Cable company gouging you. It’s the content owners that are raising their prices and this that is passed to customers.

This is the main reason Netflix started owning content and everyone else is doing the same.

I'm glad at least one person can see the forest for the trees.

Many have clamored for à la carte TV for a long time, but the funny thing is that the market is providing it in the form of indivdiual services, not individual channels within a service. That's how the content owners have decided to offer it.

it’s baffling to me how one of the richest companies in the world can justify a rate increase right now...for channels nobody was asking for. It’s absurd.

it’s not up to them. It’s the channel providers jacking up their rates.

Being without good programming/sports these last few months has me thinking about the entire industries. Started to really think about the value.
Live sporting event ticket prices are out of control and the networks and movie industry too.

+1 to cancelling - this is insane, I remember when I signed up for PS Vue at $35 per month and it included DVR and all live locals. I've tolerated these slow price hikes but to increase 30% when you were already at $50 is just ridiculous. Couldn't be any more upset with them.

So I pay under $20 a month for Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Why would I pay Youtube a ridiculous amount of money for what might as well be cable and all the rubbish that comes with it.
Some of us enjoy live sports, news and ability to channel surf.

I'm really considering canceling and going over to Hulu + Live TV and saving $10 a month. I have little to often no interest in channels YouTube TV is adding, so I'm not too happy about paying for them. I thought their existing lineup was largely fine.
