Zuckerberg: Android's Openness Offers Opportunity for 'Way Better' Experience Than iPhone

Is this something facebook have said they were doing then, as its certainly not something that's built into android. You know that though...right?

Mark stated within the conference that they will be bringing ads to the experience eventually.

Was one of the questions placed forward to him at the end.

while it maybe more open, it's still not a better experience than iPhone

You completely missed the point. He isn't saying it "is" he is saying that it's openness allows that it could be. I mean when you essentially have the keys to the shop the possibilities are endless compared to when you are only given access to one room

Of course android is better for facebook. Neither company understands the term "customer privacy"

Research. Android is an open source operating system. Not a company, a product.

Google probably understands customer privacy more than Facebook or Apple as their entire business relies on keeping data stored the correct way, and not violating their privacy policy.

Well that sucks, "buy our phone, then look at our ads". That'll surely be the first phone with adverts baked into the OS.

Really dont want to be told that Candy Crush was just played by someone on Facebook.

Why do they keep pushing the "Android is open" mantra. The truth is that without Google apps, an Android phone is a brick. Likewise without Apple, an iPhone is a brick. I would not consider either to be open since you need IOS / Apple for an iPhone and Google for an Android phone.

Completely agree. A sad state of affairs if it really comes to this and I guess the investors are the ones pushing for it.

Hopefully some clever bods will produce an app to disable them.

What's even worse is that it disables widgets (one of the reasons for getting an Android phone).

Apple, thanks for keeping FB on distance, at least a bit. Don't work too much with them. Don't allow them to use private API to achieve better "integration". Lets FB play with Android.

"Experience" Takeover

There is a difference between "user experience" and "developer experience".

I imagine, at best, Zucker is trying to reference the latter. But in our reality he really means "taking over Android is a way better experience than taking over iOS".

Amazon didn't for the Kindle. Just one of many examples of how Android is used with no Google involvement.

Android is an open and Free OS.

Desperately trying to reinflate a burst balloon.

I consider FB the same way I considered MS. With contempt and disdain. More so in fact, as Zuckerberg talks in clichés like "experience" and "social" as if they're something he invented and his company actually adds value to the world.

The fAcebook phone: designed exclusively for those who feel they aren't hacked or sold enough on the Internet.

If customers want a more open phone they'll start buying Android..

Based on last years figures, it looks like that's already happening. It's inevitable given the diverse range of hardware Android is on.

and Apple will respond by "opening up" iOS more - i.e., exposing more API and relaxing its AppStore rules.

I dont think they will just yet. First they will try a few big releases bringing new features out. If eventually it does get so bad that Android is selling a lot more than iOS, they will have no choice.

No surprise that Zuckerberg is talking up Android really given today's announcement...

Yup, he's playing to the audience. Apple did it with Google when the iPhone came out, they sucked up to them big time when it came to maps and youtube being on the phone.

Apple could improve the UI, especially Settings. For example, in Safari settings, why is the option "Private Browsing" there?

Completely agree. iOS's settings are a mess, they need to bring them into each app instead of having the settings app doing it all. Safari's iOS UI needs a rewrite to make it less cumbersome IMO.

How is it a brick? You can still call, text, email and browse without Google Apps. Need more apps? Use the Amazon App Store. Need navigation? Download a map from Amazon. Unless your house is built with brick that can do all those...

says the man with a jailbroken iPhone LOL

Serously!

Though, even when jailbroken the iphone is still more closed then a regular Android device since you have to ssh into it and if you sync through itunes you get all those anoying itunes folders that make no sense and scatter your music into random numbered folders.

If there are any tweaks to get around this especially the itunes thing I'd love to know. PM me. :)

Imagine apple opened ios, let developers submit what apps they want but still ensure they don't contain viruses or malware, and updated the UI for with ios 7 making it a bit more slick?

Ah one can dream :)
