What Zuckerberg meant to say is "Apple charges as much as it can for hardware, but Meta is willing to sell at a Loss to ... sell our user's personal data so we can charge as much as we can for Ads. Our users are the product and we will exploit them to maximize profits."

As much as I agree with Tim Cook that Metaverse is really undefinable at this point (and still not interesting/mature enough to care about it), the Zuck Zuck has a point. He is willing to bet everything for this project to take off, and it is hard not to respect that regardless of your stance.

Apple is just an investor-driven money machine that will sell you the same hardware and design for as long as possible. This is why I think many people miss Steve who knew money followed innovation and calculated risk, not just blatantly repeating yourself. To sum it up? Zuck Zuck has a point t.

While I respect the Coyote‘s ambitions, I’m just placing my bets on the Roadrunner’s abilities.

This has been the case for the last 6-7 years.

Apple pricing is absolutely taking the customers for a ride. The products no longer justify the price tag.

It’s time they were publicly called out for price gouging customers. All other companies should join in and highlight it.

You're missing the point. People are willing to pay for a privacy focussed product.

Users really need to understand that their metadata has value and governments need to enforce that metadata cannot be collected or sold without user consent. I'd happily use products/ services such as Facebook if they had the following options:

1) Paid subscription, with no ads/ tracking.
2) Ad supported, but user takes 50% of all metadata sold and ad impressions delivered.

I'd take the paid subscription route every single time.
Here is the thing.

I don't want or need the "metaverse", even for free. Even with your fancy goggles for free. Even with no ads! Even if you paid me $1000/month to use it 10 hours/week! Even with completely guaranteed privacy (anonymity).

It just offers me no value whatsoever.

My iPhone on the other hand...yeah, that has value.

It was recently discovered (i think they knew all along) and disclosed how many bots occupied Twitter… i would be willing to subscribe to the belief that Facebook/Meta is comparable from a percentage % standpoint. Would the zuck disclose such proprietary information? Doubtful…

And i would be willing to take the bet on “there are a lot of that iPhone install base that would give up their iPhone before they gave up instagram and Whatsapp if they had to choose.” - My bet is people would no lose their iPhone over some CIA/NSA supported crap spyware… it just ain’t happening. Thats why the zuck is out there talking up his next scam, the metaverse - as he sees facebook, instagram, and whats app in a slow death spiral… they need to get the replacement up and running by the time the inevitable sets in… a lot of the same weak minds that have become addicted to giving mark a digital profile of themselves, will fall for that scam as well.

In 2018, four of the top five most downloaded iOS apps of all time were Facebook apps. You're kidding yourself, unless you think bots are downloading the apps to pretend iOS devices.

You realise you don’t have to buy it right?

Can someone, anyone, please tell me the device that Zuk's referring to that competes with Meta's A/R headset? Is it the iPhone?

Apple: We'll take that bet. 😂
Apple is focused on AR which will be a part of everyday life in ten years time. Smart cars and AR are akin to pre smart phone era. I can envisage, 'how did I ever live without my AR sunglasses?': I'll will have completed a cardless cash withdrawal in my banking app then have opened my Hungry Jack's (Burger King) app. On the inside of my Apple AR sunnies a little red right turn arrow with 120 metres and my bank's logo will populate. A Hungry Jack's icon and an arrow straight ahead, 205 metres will appear. No longer relying on the accuracy of one's memory or using apps / Safari to search for branches / trading hours. AR will enhance our lives without being intrusive or locking one into a virtual landscape. I imagine that sunnies will adapt / be programmable to the the amount of light intensity (polarisation) that each person can handle so they'll be able to be worn all day. Heads up displays in the inside of a car windscreen are brilliant.

Exactly. The hard thing will be to get it super intuitive. Minority Report style. But if anyone can do it, well... it will probably be Apple, but it won't be Siri....

Meta's financials are out and, apparently, the loss leader approach is going according to plan. ;)

Quarterly revenue down 4%, profit down 52% and the Reality Labs unit (home of the "Metaverse" project) has only lost $9.4b so far this year.

Exactly, it's not gouging if you don't NEED the products. If anything, why isn't anyone going after the companies involved in ludicrous grocery prices????
People will complain about everything.

I saw one product question on Amazon...guy wanted to know if the item, which sold for $3.99, had a lifetime warranty. WTF?

Zuckerberg criticizing Apple when Facebooks revenue and earnings have missed several times and Apple on the other hand has done great. Zuckerberg could learn from Apple and should!
Hey Mark how many Billions with a B did you lose this week

"A year ago, Zuckerberg’s net worth was estimated at around $142 billion. However, Meta’s lackluster quarterly earnings have shaved off over $90 billion of Zuckerberg’s personal fortune."

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has criticized Apple's pricing strategy by claiming that the tech giant typically "charges as much as it can" for hardware, whereas Meta will take a different approach by selling products like its new $1500 AR/VR headset at a "break even" price point, or in some cases even a loss (via Business Insider).

In a podcast interview following the launch of Meta's new "Quest Pro" headset, Zuckerberg said it's natural for hardware companies to want to make a profit on product sales, but that Apple seeks to charge customers as much as possible. In contrast, Zuckerberg said Meta will take a different route with its portfolio of hardware products, and claimed his company may make no profit from some of its sales and will instead rely on revenue generated by software and services offered in the metaverse.
This week, Meta announced the Quest Pro, its latest AR/VR headset for the so-called "metaverse." At $1500, the Quest Pro is the high-end successor model to the Meta Quest and boasts a more comfortable design, more advanced display technology, and sensors that can read a user's emotions and facial movements, according to Meta. Apple's AR/VR headset is rumored to be announced in January, and you can learn more about it by checking out our AR/VR roundup.
