It's true. It's why Apple lost in the TV streaming stick market and in the smart speakers market. Other companies were willing to sell at break even or low margins or even at a loss in order to make money through other ways.

It'll be tough for Apple to win in the VR market unless its devices are significantly superior.
Honda makes the Ridgeline and they have essentially zero desire to compete the truck market. Every other truck out there is better than the Ridgeline. But Honda doesn't make it for everybody - they make it for individuals and families who just want a Honda with a pickup bed and they don't really focus or care to compete in the 1500 market-space.

I imagine it's very similar for Apple and the AppleTV. They make it for the people who want to stay in the apple ecosystem and gaining additional market share is just lagniappe.

As much as I agree with Tim Cook that Metaverse is really undefinable at this point (and still not interesting/mature enough to care about it), the Zuck Zuck has a point. He is willing to bet everything for this project to take off, and it is hard not to respect that regardless of your stance.

Apple is just an investor-driven money machine that will sell you the same hardware and design for as long as possible. This is why I think many people miss Steve who knew money followed innovation and calculated risk, not just blatantly repeating yourself. To sum it up? Zuck Zuck has a point t.
Lost leader business is unsustainable. It’s why Apple doesn’t keep killing product. They can start slow and take over market by offering quality. How many products have google come out with and people buy that got killed over the last few years.

I'm generally an early adopter and happy to drop cash on new tech. I have a Rift and a Quest 2 but have never used either much more than for occasional gaming and a fun distraction in lockdown. Neither cost more than a few hundred dollars however. There is nothing in the VR world today that is worth anything close to $1500 as VR is still a novelty item much like 3d TVs. Either the software needs to improve exponentially to make it a must have item or the price of the headsets needs to be low enough that it is an inconsequential purchase. Anything more than $250 in my opinion and this will go the way of 3d TVs.
Your mistake is limiting your thinking to VR. AR has very different usages and future despite the similarities of tech.

I've got news for you: every company is investor driven. Otherwise they'd get sued by said investors. The rest of the comment - "...[Apple] will sell you the same hardware...for as long as possible..." - is just trollish nonsense.

Childish comment and calling people "trollish" is one of the biggest online boomerangs I have yet to see. Be more mature or don't join a serious forum, seriously.

I think there is room for a middle ground, plain and simple. Look up how Tim Cook did his job before coming CEO and you will see he just followed is MO to the point: Measure thrice, cut once. Or even better: Don't cut if you don't have to.

He is not taking risks and that is the problem I have with style as a man in charge.

LOL the comments here just prove Zuckerberg's right. All you emotionally attached sheep justifying Apple for selling you stuff is ridiculous. This is why Apple will never change and always make money off of you.
Well, I mean, I plan on dying eventually. So they won’t ALWAYS make money off me. I’m pretty sure their business plan is to “Get new users to replace me when I die” though. Which, I guess is fairly solid.

Can't stand Facebook/ Meta. They're sloppy, and have little ethics particularly when it comes to privacy.

I woudn't be surprised if Meta "Trojan horses" their products. They do anything to get it into the hands of the population then use the info gathered to sell to other companies.

The new AR/VR headset probably sends a retinal / brain scan to their servers and sell that information to the highest bidder. ;)

Though VR will come along for the ride, Apple's thrust in the market will be AR (augmented reality). That's the market Apple is addressing, with a far wider audience in both commercial/business and consumer spaces.
Apple’s likely has some purposes planned for their release and they’re communicating to their first release developers. As such, they have a far better idea of what folks will do with it AND taking it off regularly is part of what they’re planning as an experience.

Meta is trying to create a reason for users to wear it many hours at a time. Such that each hour someone’s NOT wearing a set is likely lost potential ad dollars. Apple’s goal is more modest and likely more attainable.

Point being that some companies would give the hardware away to have premium access to everything about you instead of having you pay the full value of your hardware while allowing you to have privacy.

“We don’t profit from selling hardware”

“You want legs? That’s $5!”
"You want a more professional virtual suit for your business meeting? That'll be $300. Discounted to $175 if you rent it from meta-goodwill, and you can use it any time you want for up to one year."

Economics 101: When you build an inferior product, you can't charge as much as those who make products that people want.

He can afford to do that because Meta is being subsidized by Putin through various fronts around sanctions. FB has been controlled by Putin since 2014, their number one advertiser.

I really can't wait for Meta to collapse. If Zuck can't get charged with crimes against humanity, this is the next best thing.

Should be "Meta Is Willing to Sell at a Loss to Collect Your Personal Data"
Accurate, but it's really more like Meta is willing to sell hardware to its products at a loss to add to inventory and incrase the product's value.

The hardware isn't really Meta's product. It has a price tag on it, sure, but its primary purpose is to acquire and increase the value of its actual product, which is the information about and attention of the people Meta ironically calls "users". Meta's actual primary customers, advertisers, have never bought a piece of hardware from Meta and never will.

They know they have their fans buying the same product at any price only so they could sleep with the Apple sticker on their pillows
Zuck, that you?

They have to sell their hardware at or near a loss because nobody wants to trust Facebook's hardware to be good for anything.

Additionally, if the UI and functionality of Facebook is at all indicative of how they plan to make the metaverse work, it'll be a hilariously short lived existence.

Zuck and his engineers intentionally design their **** with quirks to up impressions and clicks so they can bill more for ad sales.

Everything about Meta is trash and I look forward to it crashing and burning at some point in the future.
