Dammit, I really wanted to pick one up while I was over at San Francisco for WWDC, alas, I come back to London on the 23rd. I was hoping I could use it in "offline" mode as an iPod and a wi-fi browser/e-mail client until they had signed in the UK.

Developer pre-sale? Well, one can dream. :)

But if there's no access to the SIM card, you'd be stuck without cell access, right? And won't the UK/European iPhones be 3G?

I love it! The ads really show you how high quality the screen is and how fast the UI is.

A UK breakfast TV program reviewed the Nokia N95 today and I was pleased to see how slwoly it moved between menu settings. It may offer a lot in terms of functiionality but for sex appeal and user interface it's a world away from the iPhone.

Nice, but im sorry the ads were really bad, it was slow, it was almost like watching a demo/training video from Apple.
It didnt have any life in it, and the music sounded just like the Switch adverts.

Interface Speed

I'll be blown away if the iPhone interface really is as snappy as it is in those commercials. Awesome.

I'm betting severe shortages of iPhones for the next 5 months.

He'd have the "best ever iPod" - some would argue that alone would be worth the price, plus the internet via wifi would be there.

For someone who knows about the iPhone, it'll seem quite slow.
For those new to it and without knowledge of it, they'll want time spent on it.

"...new 2 year ACTIVATION plan."

Is this the contracts we're used to? Debate...

It's not going to be some odd setup where you actually lease the iphone for two years, then its yours to keep at the end. May get around the issue of people using it on other networks (even if they loose some functionality.

Observations...

Logo on the phone is 'AT&T' not 'at&t'

Date is 3 June (today), nice touch

Time is 9:42 all the way through on all three ads. Faked for consistency, obviously.

Icons on the main screen are in a different order than in the older pictures.

The 'Web' button/icon at the bottom of the screen has been renamed to 'Safari', presumably to build brand awareness and make it easier for people when they see references to 'Safari' on websites (for compatibility, say).

2 year contract required, no other details (i.e., no separate statement about voice vs. data service)

Did anyone catch what it said right where it shows "Only with the new AT&T" at the bottom of the page. I think it says something about a 2 year contact. Someone check it!!!!!!!!!

June 29th with NEW 2 year contract. Always read the fine print.

It says "activation plan." That may be the same thing as a contract. But it could be that you just tell AT&T and/or Apple that you "plan" to be active for two more years and they let you have it without a contract at the same price.

Yes I was joking.

The "plan" might have to do with adding data service.

Of course the reality of the iPhone UI may not be quite up to the Apple hype about it

Compared to the typical US phone ads this was a breath of fresh air.

Most of our ads are all flash showing off the design of the phone but nothing about how it actually works. Meaning you might buy a pretty phone with a horrible interface (for the record i'm not talking about smart phones but your standard phones, which I think this ad was targeting).

For once here's a simple ad that shows that a phone works and works well.

They might have focused a bit too much on the ipod functions (we get it. We all know how to use an ipod). But that's my only complaint.

But if there's no access to the SIM card, you'd be stuck without cell access, right? And won't the UK/European iPhones be 3G?

Yeah, I was going to use it as an Ipod and a Wi-Fi communications device until they had a UK carrier. In any case, it was going to be a risk to take because for all I know - and very probably - they will be locked to AT&T sim cards. There's nothing set in stone about the Europe phones being 3G, it's just a rumor.

Also, I captured the phone UI from the ad and the one from the apple.com/iphone page. A few changes to note:

apple.com/iphone (old) Version

Calendar date widget icon seems to update. Weather widget icon seems static. As does time - the one on widget does not match 9.42 am in ad version. As someone mentioned, "Web" was renamed "Safari".

And the icons are moved about, but I don't doubt users can move them about anyway. Also, on ad version, a small bluetooth icon is visible on the right hand side.

And also the obvious change from Cingular to AT&T.

cool, can't wait. Still don't know if i'm going to get it or not. Wish their was any indication of iChat on it

Nothing new but it's getting closer to a release... unfortunately I've got ages before I'll get my hands on it :(

Mmm... No hand of any woman here...
Strange...
Just wondering...

Obviously. Women are banned from owning one until all male pre-orders have been filled. :)

You're reading something into nothing at all. Similarly the hand was white, and there was no wedding ring: iPhone for lonely white bachelors!
