2: they totally don't follow apple's history of never!!!!! telling a date for availability in the future.

Wut? ;)

Now I know you said "availability", and the ads say "Coming June 29", but they could easily reinterpret that to mean whatever they want (the original Macintosh shipped two days after the 1984 ad ran).

Anyway, I like the ads, they show you doing real things on your iPhone that people can easily understand, unlike many Apple ads which are more high-concept (ie. vague).

Since we Macphiles are nitpicking the ads. Did you notice that the guy on the caller ID is "John Appleseed" Get it? yukyuk SNORT!

These are great ads, and very apple-sque too. They can be understood by anybody and show how the phone functions and at the same time they make clear that this is a different phone than anything else you've used before. I don't understand why some people complain.

Compared to the typical US phone ads this was a breath of fresh air.

Most of our ads are all flash showing off the design of the phone but nothing about how it actually works. Meaning you might buy a pretty phone with a horrible interface (for the record i'm not talking about smart phones but your standard phones, which I think this ad was targeting).

For once here's a simple ad that shows that a phone works and works well.

They might have focused a bit too much on the ipod functions (we get it. We all know how to use an ipod). But that's my only complaint.

Thats a switch. Apple ads usually focus on the design what the other guys focus on stuff. And I got to say that I loved the Chocolate ads, those were sweet. The iPhone ads show how awesome it is tho--so thats good.

Just to play it safe I have a few criticisms of these adds....
1: they are from ATT, not apple... this is not consistent of apple
2: they totally don't follow apple's history of never!!!!! telling a date for availability in the future.
3: if you watch the video the part of the iphone that causes it to switch from widescreen to straight up seems to be off timing???????
4: also there are a few times he hits the screen and the screen doesn't respond
5: not to mention it's seems like a very poor add.

well for starters it takes a second for it to realize you have flipped it, so that is the delay for that, and another good point to mention is that the screen realizes when you accidentally touch it, some kinda error correction, so that explains the touches that don't do anything. i would say the adds are from both, since apple does have them on their website... oh and the iPhone is very unlike Apple, but they do it anyways and i'm stoked. i think the adds needed more of a wow factor tho. other than that.... not bad not bad... I WANT ONE

Obviously. Women are banned from owning one until all male pre-orders have been filled. :)

You're reading something into nothing at all. Similarly the hand was white, and there was no wedding ring: iPhone for lonely white bachelors!

I do not conclude anything from this. I just noted it and you're right : no black hand and no wedding ring.
"Nothing at all" doesn't exist, especially when it comes about ads :)
For now I'd just say that the ads focus strictly on the product and not on the "target". This will change in the next campaign I guess...

These commercials are great. They succeed at showing all the strong features of the phone, and how they work well together.

Good work Apple. :)

If anyone can help me clarify here, that'd be much appreciated. The ad states "with new 2 year activation". I am seriously hoping that doesnt mean customers who already have Cingular are being shut out of the initial launch.

I switched to Cingular about 3 months ago for a Palm Treo 750. I will be very angry if I am denied at the counter because I am a customer.

On the "Calamari" ad (http://www.apple.com/iphone/ads/ad3/), the narrator asks, "Which one is the closest?" as he thinks about a place for seafood.

Does this imply built in GPS?

not GPS... probably it can locate where you are by determining which cell you are using, and so list out the seafood restaurant within the cell or nearby

and also... it better be able to disable the phone function (like those sonyericsson can) ... cause you will see people using it on the plane and you will have to disable the phone functionand use the multimedia function of the phone. otherwise you wont see a lot of business people using it

haven't seen the ads on tv yet but they sure are catchy. gotta admit apple has upped their advertisement level.. a couple hundred thousand high schoolers see this 'new' ipod and right to mommy and daddy they go!

cha-ching for apple!

Using a guy hand is so the nails don't get in the way of touching the screen. No wedding ring so it won't scratch against it. And white to provide contrast to the black background.

Excited!

It just aired on 60 Minutes on CBS so hopefully that is a helpful clue in starting to track it down.

I just saw it as well and I jumped. My wife was making fun of me for being so excited.

That said she wants one, too...

We will be breaking our contract with T-mobile (we have not locked ourselves in a new 1-2 year contract and can switch at any time, as planned)

W00T!!!! TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY!!!! iPhone displays June 3rd on the ads! My birthday will now forever be ingrained in the first significant iPhone ads!!!!

I saw the ad during 60 minutes and was quite stunned. I thought these wouldn't start until after WWDC so steve could have the first (and last) words before the blitz started.

I actually like the ad cause it was clear, concise, and informative. But if you think about it, it had to be.

I mean, who watches 60 minutes? People who are old, nerdy, generally intelligent, or "plugged in". These people will respond well to that type of ad.

Other than mac/techno freaks, most people have no clue apple is making a phone. This ad is well suited to bring attention to the product.

I imagine well see ads with silhouetted dancing women on the phone in a few months time.

That's exactly what I did when the advertisement came on during 60 minutes... But they said no. Can't leave Verizon. Alas, I will have to dream.
