Effect not working in iChat

Hey guys, maybe you can help me figure this out?

I downloaded the file and extracted it to /Library/Compositions but all I get in iChat is a grey background.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Well personally I dont want to be associated with the sharing of files from Developer builds, but what everyone else does is up to them. There are probably other threads where such things are being discussed, including that a few of those missing screensavers are in Leopard if you install the developers extras and move a few files.

My stuff is indeed flakey as it was botched together in a rush, there are proper ways to do it and I imagine there will be various people and companies offering effects. I probably dont have the time to do anything other than these botch jobs, but hopefully it will inspire others to do a proper job of creating effects and it was something to do after running out of new things to try in leopard ;)

We shouldn't be sharing files from the developer build. Please don't post or request them.

thanks,
arn

Ok, you're right. I'm sorry for offering/ discussing them. But, I thought that the NDA's regarding the developer builds expired when Leopard was released? I could be wrong though.

NDA's are lifted so you can talk about the dev builds, but Apple still owns the copyright on those files, and they didn't release them on Leopard for whatever reason... so we shouldn't be distributing.

plus they could come in a update etc

ok, valid points. Won't happen again. And PLEASE, no PM's/IM's from anyone regarding those files. If they shouldn't be shared on MacRumors, that includes using PM's & IM's to do so. Thank you

Alright, so how would we go about getting some of the Example effects working in Photobooth? Like for example, /Developer/Examples/Quartz Composer/Compositions/Feedback/Combed Trail.qtz.
If you open it in Quartz Composer, you can preview it, but if you put it in /Library/Compositions, it doesnt show up in Photobooth.

All I had to do to get these working was to...

All I had to do to get these to work was to drag the .qtz files for the effects i wanted into my /Library/Compositions/ folder.

I played around with the EffectsOrdering.plist as well, in both iChat and Photo Booth, but I ended up realized that i didn't need to alter them at all.

Photo booth and iChat both list 5 pages of effects now, the 8 i've selected from the HolloGpack1.zip file that elbows so provided are on the 4th page of effects, along with the default view in the center. The user backgrounds have been shifted to the 5th page. (you can see in the thumbnails below)

If you want simply one effect to show up in a certain place in photobooth, you have to edit the EffectsOrdering.plist file in Photo Booth/Contents/Resources, otherwise, you can just drag the .qtz effect into your /Library/Compositions/ folder, and it will automatically add it. (see thumbnail below)

hope this helps some people figure out their effects!

(This works for both iChat and Photo Booth)

ps. anyone know how to remove backgrounds from photo booth yet?

Well, the effect the OP posted that he created I think is actually better than that old dev hologram effect. Maybe Apple should use his. :)

This is very cool that we can add compositions to iChat and PB now. Now if I can just figure out how to stop iChat from crashing anytime I try more than one person in a chat I'll be happy.

Hello again,

After having given up I decided to look at this thread again and I realized how stupid I have been. I totally missed the entry that told me to copy the HoloGit file into my /Library/Compositions/ - after doing that, everything is OK.

Now I will try the latest pack with multiple colors. Thank you everyone who has helped me or lead me in the correct direction :)

Some many helpful people here *SNIFF* *DAMN THAT COCAINE* :D

Edited Sunday to add new HoloGPack1 file which has versions of the effect in various different colours, plus a couple of other experimental effects. The Test1.qtz should work with user backdrops but its not really right yet, an early work in progress.

The HoloGeek compositions are really nice, but they have some weird clipping issues, so if you sit up straight or too far to the left, you get cut off rather abruptly in the screen long before your visage actually hits the video screen borders.

I too was having the problem. But I had not copied the HoloGit.qtz file to /Library/Compositions Once I duplicated and copied the file to that location, the effect showed up in both PhotoBooth, and in iChat.

Worth a try if you have only copied the file into Resources in PhotoBooth.

Thanks!:) that worked like a charm.

Spent my day trying to recreate the missing effect, using Quartz Composer. I havent seen the original Apple version but I think this is probably close.

I wouldnt say its perfect yet but its working so I am going to share it here shortly. It should work on any Leopard machine but will probably run quite badly on slower machines.

Any ideas for a name? That all thats stopping me releasing it this minute, so come up with a good name and its yours :) Names that avoid infringing Star Wars trademarks would probably be a good idea ;) If nobody comes up with anything its going toend up getting called HoloGeek or HoloGit :D

Um why don't you just ask someone who has the leopard from wwdc to get the qtz file for the old effect. it is in system/library/compositions

:)

if you wanted the exact effect

DUDE how did u do that.. did u use photoshop... tell me plzzzzzzz

In iChat's video preferences, open the Special Effects palette from the Video menu. Select your Ghost effect, but when it says 'Step out of the frame', don't. Then the effect kicks in, you're ghostly but you are also part of the background. Arrange your ghost self, then do a screen capture.
