WOW! How the click works!

Are you running Mac OS 10.6.4?

Thanks for the update about the clicking motion. I've gone back and looked at some of the high resolution pictures over on Engadget and it does appear that there is a very thin border around the surface of the trackpad, so I can now see how the click happens.

I just took a look, and the clicking is quite innovative. It is not the trackpad that clicks, the clicking is done with... THE TRACKPAD FEET!

There are two little feet, like the two, small, round rubber feet under the wireless keyboard, at the bottom of the trackpad. That's where the clicking happens! Quite smart, I would say!

Because of the angle, it is easier to click at the bottom (where the feet are) than the top, but with enough pressure, it can be done.

BTW, yes, I am using 10.6.4. Still needs the so-far-unavailable update.

Interesting. So I suppose if you turned the trackpad upside down, you could just click on the feet to make a click.

Not that I'd regularly do that or anything... :)

yup its the bottom feet that click its weird but it works well. tracking is smooth and pretty fast just waiting for update so i could get gestures working

:(

So this isn't quite the living room couch solution I had hoped for. Oh well, I guess you can still tap-to-click (thought I detest that).

Tap-to-click is pretty well implemented on Macs... My Macbook Pro never seems to make errors.

You do realize that Snow Leopard came out almost a year ago, right? It's cheap! Make the upgrade already!

I'm in the same place as plumosa. Not ready to make the Snow Leopard upgrade just yet. Working towards it (upgrading or replacing incompatible s/w apps). Although, it would be nice to have Leopard 10.5.8 drivers for the Magic Trackpad. They made them for the Magic Mouse when it first came out and was only available for Snow Leopard.

Not sure what this is going to be for. I don't think most people would want this unless they have issues using mice. Either way, ilife and the "mystery app" macrumors thinks it is gonna have. Might have something to do with this.

Wow, look at all the pages already.

I think things like this are baby steps towards Apple eventually phasing out physical keyboards. You heard it here first.

I'm wondering when there will be a keyboard device that's simply a rectangle iPad that's tethered to the Mac with an on-screen keyboard. This could be the start you are talking about.

Exactly. I think the next major update to the Apple keyboard will probably have virtual keys displayed on an LCD / AMOLED / whatever touch screen. And I think you'll be able to multi-touch directly on its surface, to eliminate the horizontal keyboard-to-touchpad and touchpad-back-to-keyboard motions.
Nah, a physical keyboard is superior to a touchscreen keyboard for touch typing.

That's why Apple actually markets the wireless keyboard for iPads. It's faster.

The main advantage of the virtual keyboard is that you don't need to carry around a physical keyboard. As a text input system, it's not better than the physical thing.

Thanks for the update (and from gusnyc too).

Are the feet on the trackpad so-called dome switches or does the entire foot move back into the bottom surface of the trackpad? It looks like they may be dome switches (as used for the key depress on some keyboards).

You can get this same thing for $5!!!

Hey iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users...check out this little app I found, that does the exact same thing!

I was going to pick it up at the Apple Store today, but I first checked the App Store for something like this, and it already exists.

Much better deal at $5 bucks! Yes...you're welcome for the advice and link. :)

not a big fan of this thing, a traditional mouse feels much more efficient and comfortable.

Don't agree at all. I've never been a fan of track pads before. In fact, with other laptops I always made a point to carry a mouse and use it, even on airplanes. Then I got my early 2009 MBP. The track pad on it is worth the price of admission. Unbelievably easy to use. I was begging for this device to replace my traditional mouse. When the Magic Mouse came out I had high hopes, until I used it. No comparison to the MBP trackpad.

I will definitely buy one of these for my Mac Mini, and I hope, hope, hope that I can get drivers for Win7. Because, if so I will have one on my desk at work, too.

Software update enables inertial scrolling in MacBook/Pro

The software update is available now. It adds inertial scrolling to the trackpad of the older Macbooks, not only the most recent model.

That is a welcomed surprise.

i can see my girlfriends parents really using this. they are in their 60's and i've been trying to teach them about their imac, but they have trouble understanding how to use the mouse. they are always dropping it off the desk and losing the pointer, i could see this really helping them out.

Apple Magic Trackpad > Mouse. Ever since the invention of the multi touch trackpads on the MBP's, I have always wanted something like this to replace my mouse at my desktop. Thank you Apple! :apple:

Drivers are out. For Mac, only 10.6.4 support - nothing for 10.5.8. But Win XP has driver support. C'mon Apple, you'll support someone else's 10 year old OS, but not your own previous version.
