Anyone gonna buy a verizon iphone 4 at retail price?

yea dude i had the same plan before i made this thread. at one point i was gonna cancel my verizon contract and go to at&t cause i was so made at the retail price. but im just gonna suck it up and stick with verizon because in the long run it will be better and i can keep my upgrade that comes next year.
Wait a sec. The price on the phones of $649 and $749; is that BEFORE taxes? Everything I had read was $599/$699 so I was actually reconsidering the 16GB and just getting the 32GB at RETAIL (UGH! 
). Of course, I've been up in San Francisco all weekned so haven't been online.
But, man if that's the Pre-tax price, that rules out the 32GB for sure. And I'm now rethinking the 16GB too. Even though it's "only" $50 more, something about that extra $50 is really pissing me off!

Looking at Apple store online again and plugging in my info for the 100th time (and praying that I would magically come up eligible), it clearly states $599 & $699 for me until October. With CA sales tax that comes out to around $649 and $749. I dont think that Apple would allow them to gouge us even more and the iPhones are the same prices on AT&T no? That would be a really dumb move by Verizon. And yeah I'd probably pay it and be really pissed off at myself.
Either way, I think just going to get the 16GB version now. I have an older 8GB nano that I use in my MINI that isn't even full. I like a little less storage so it forces me to keep my tunes fresh. And the 32GB iPad I had (and my wife's current one) barely had like 5GB of storage used. I'm uber OCD about keeping all my hard drives and devices cleared of clutter I don't use. Maybe later on down the line when I'm fully eligible for an upgrade I'll jam Verizon for the highest capacity model.
But, damn, maybe the 32GB will be eaiser to sell when that time comes? Ugh.
you might be able to squeeze a few extra bucks out of a 32GB if you were to resell in the future, but idk about $100 to just break even. my DX has 24GB and i dont even think ive used a quarter of it so i know 16GB will do just fine for me
PS- I'm a smoker too. Great minds think alike huh? Seriously, I've been smoking (my wife too) for over 20 years. Coincidence is, we both made the promise that after TOMORROW night, we're going to try to quit. I just came back from S.F. where I went to see Neurosis with an old buddy from Texas who lives up there. I told my wife I needed one last smoking and drinking blowout weekend .
I smoke American Spirit lights these days, she smokes the American Spirit Ultra Lights. I know in NY they're even more expensive than they are here. She was just up in NYC a few weeks ago and paid like $10 for a pack! I always get cartons because they're "cheaper".
Now, I'm what you'd call a "serious smoker" - not that I'm proud of it- I smoke around a pack and a half a day. I'm one of those crazy, heavily tattooed, older hardcore/ punk rock scene of the 80's guys who always figured, "you're gonna croak anyway may as well enjoy it". My motivation is mostly financial. By quitting I'm saving $2912 a year! Plus the health thing too - I GUESS!
Anyway, dude, I love to smoke! And I don't know what it's gonna be like having a beer and NO SMOKE! It's freaking me out. But, I'm gonna give it a go. That's another reason why I decided to spring for the phone. As a reward for quitting and because hopefully in the end I'll be saving a good chunk of dough. But, man, they sure have made smokers feel like lepers these days.

was there a special reason you guys picked tomorrow night? thats cool that you guys are trying to quit. i dont wanna face a night of drinking with out my smokes. im only 24 but ive been smoking for about 8 years and im at half a pack a day. cigs are about 10 bucks a pack here but i buy indian reservation cigs online and pay $25 a carton for some decent menthol smokes. thats badass that ur an old school tattoo punk on the macrumors forum, i thought it was all nerds like myself lol
Oh well you're still young dude. I chose tomorrow because I went up to San Francisco this weekend to see an old friend and go see Neurosis play a show. Neurosis doesn't play a lot of American concerts these days so it's a big deal when they do. I had to have one last smoking weekend because I knew I'd be drinking heavily.
I'm still a nerd though, or at least my wife thinks so.
Back on topic, I've been wondering what time the online pre-orders are going to begin on Feb 3rd. Anyone have a guess? Midnight? 9AM EST? Staggered roll out for the different time zones? Not sure how AT&T did it.
I also wonder how many they have and wonder when they will run out. Is it possible they run out of pre-orders on the 3rd and not have enough for the public release on the 10th?

i have read 12 AM eastern time so if ur in cali i would say 9 PM on feb. 2nd. i feel like at&t went live with pre orders at like 1 or 2 am, or maybe thats just when i got thru to their site cause it was so backed up. i have a bad feeling that is going to happen again on the 3rd.
it's close, but paying the etf on my fascinate (roughly $300 right now) would be paid from my fascinate and buying the ip4 would be $200. Buying the iphone outright will cost be roughly $300 out of pocket, $100 savings would be great.
Not to mention, if I buy an ip4 outright I'll be paying close to $60 in taxes while I the subsidized price would only be a $20 tax hit.
ive been contemplating the ETF road myself, but ive decided to add a line to buy the subsidized iphone 4. With my current line, im going to purchase a mifi (verizon estimated equipment cost at 59$) and use it to serve the remaining year providing internet to my wireless devices. after i sell my blackberry storm2, ill still pay less then retail on it, and have a year of wireless internet
i thought about opening another line but i figure ill just shell out the cash for retail price and save myself the money that verizon would tack on to my bill for selling me a subsidized phone. my bill is already high enough
Same here. Plus if the rumors of iPhone 5 are true it'll be around the time I'm actually eligible for an upgrade. Looks like the rumors are prediciting a pretty big performance boost. Then again, I can't see them releasing another one so soon for Verizon. Dunno. Either way, won't be an issue to sell the ViPhone 4. I do know that I'll just hold onto to this iPhone and my upgrade eligibility this time around until a new iPhone does come out though.
PS- during my road trip to San Francisco I realized again how much I hate my Droid.
dont get me wrong, my droid x is a great phone, but whenever i look at it all i can think about is a brand new, shiny iphone 4. its like picturing megan fox when youre banging some fat chick. i almost feel like im cheating on my droid x, who never did me wrong in the first place lol
Not if your in CA like myself. Subsidized or not, you pay tax on full retail price.
This is interesting, When i bought all my subsidize iphones from ATT/Apple i only paid taxes on the flat $200 not on the off contract price. I think the iphone system is different than other phones in that respect.
my fascinate looks a bit better than the droid x, but there are so many little things the iphone does better. I will miss the google navigation though.
it certainly is the little things, because i know the DX and fascinate are great phones. i think android is a little buggy for me at times, and iOS just has that nice smooth integration with my macbook. its just perfect
I doubt it, every single upgrade I have ever gotten via an upgrade with Verizon here in California has been taxed at the FULL retail price. My wife recently upgraded to a BB world phone 2 months ago (bold or tour whatever the hell it's called) for $50 yet paid tax on $499. It's upsetting to say the least and I questioned the legality of it. Would be nice if it was different though. Same thing with my original Droid too. $199 upgrade with tax on $599.
