My order still shows up as an "approved pre-order" but it hasn't shown up as shipped yet. I ordered my iPhone4s from at&t on their website on the 7th. I called at&t and asked them how my phone could be still in a "pre-order" status when the phone was on sale at the retail stores, furthermore why wasn't my phone shipped! The sales rep said that she didn't have any answers for me other than my order had been processed and my phone would be shipped "soon"

So what is "soon"? my definition of "soon" and at&t definition of "soon" must be different. When I asked what "soon" meant, she told me "I can make up a date and time for you if it would make you feel better" I'm not kidding! She actually told me that!

About an hour later I got a call from a different at&t rep who told me that they apologized for the delay in my order and that my phone would be shipped to me on Monday. (yeah!!) And that at&t would credit me $50 for the inconvenience.

While, I am not happy with waiting until monday after I had gone through all of the trouble to pre-order my phone...I'm happy about getting my iPhone 64gb for $350.

RE: Cancelling in-store orders

Another note--the reps at the store I went to said that they have no problems cancelling preorders made in-store, if anyone is in a position where they haven't gotten their store preorder yet and would prefer cancelling it and buying in the store.

They also said that there was no way to cancel orders made online from the store (and while 5 reps had told me they could cancel over the phone, the 3 I spoke with while in my local AT&T store today absolutely refused to do so), but might be able to work ways around it--in my case, they just cancelled the port on my numbers, re-ported it on new devices that they charged me the discounted upgrade price for, and said that if my original order ever does ship (which they doubt it will) I can just bring it into the store for a refund.

Preordered on the 7th at 1:55pm mountain time, at an AT&T store for in store pickup (had to because I'm using my dads upgrade(family plan)). It sat in back order all week. So I decide to back to the store and the same rep to see about my status, since it was still back ordered and not charged to my credit card. She cancelled that order, reversed the upgrade, and then I was able to purchase one 64gb in store. :).

Mine still says pending shipment. The guy on the phone said it would ship Tuesday at the lastest. I never heard of this before....was I duped? I'm not sure what to do right now.:(

It's not that I care about the phone itself, I just want clear answers to make the right decision. I work for Comcast so I know how customer service can work. I just don't want to get to two-three weeks from now only to have some issues pop up. I would love to go with Verizon, but they're too expensive compared to ATT

I went into the AT&T store tonight. They still had 64GB phones left. If you still don't have your phone, and you live in a more rural area, I would recommend going to the AT&T store tomorrow and seeing if they have any left.

Just wanted to post this for the record:

Had to go to store, explain situation kindly, get told twice they could not cancel preorder, had to get mad and loud (unfortunately) in order to get the manager to cancel the preorder. It didn't take them more than 2 minutes to cancel it after I made a scene. WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST DO IT FROM THE GET GO!?

Afterwards, they told me they had JUST run out of iphone 4s's(?) and I had to find a store that had them in stock. This was a lie as I looked around and people were still buying them and getting queued to buy. But I didn't feel like making a bigger scene and I didn't want to give them my money anyway. I asked if they could point to a store that had stock and they refused (said they didn't have that information; yeah right).

Went to a smaller regional ATT store, walked in, bought phone and left.

In the end, I would say that if you MUST order through ATT, do it online.

Wil never, ever again order at the store or at ATT. PERIOD.

I had my wife go to AT&T this morning to pick me up a white 4s as my "preorder" never shipped. Had no problem getting the phone in store and we then called AT&T to have my preorder cancelled.

Will never make that mistake of preordering at AT&T again!

I think it's pretty comical that a lot of us got up so early and then have been feverishly tracking orders all week only to cancel and buy in store... After noon no less.

Agree, pretty ridiculous considering that I had such a great experience with my store. Glad you were able to get a phone today though.

Signing off now. Hope and wish that everyone gets their phones soon. :)

I am also in back order hell (on line order) and after three calls to customer service and getting a different answer each call I gave up on getting an estimate on when my phone would ship (someone did say within 14 days). I went the AT&T store (Magnolia branch) at 8:30 pm to buy a 64 gb iPhone S and was told that they had everything in stock except the 8 gb.

I had also been told over the phone that they could cancel a premier order at a store and since I was getting a new phone number they would just activate a new phone number. After waiting in line for 10 minutes. the manager came over and started talking to me. He looked puzzled and went to speak to someone behind the cash register and came back with "we don't do that" and that was really the end of the discussion. To add insult to injury they sold three 64 gb phones when I was in the store and had "plenty more in stock".

This is probably the most dramatic endorsement for Verizon you could imagine. Sure they cost more but they don't treat their customers like dirt.

I had to pick up my phone from the FedEx office. My phone didn't come with that little needle to take out the sim card.

Just take a small safety pin and snip the sharp point off making a nice flat tip. I keep one on my key chain for Beta testing SIM swaps between all my iDevices.

US models do not come with the Sim remover tool. They are locked to a carrier and they figure you won't need it. :)

A small paperclip will do the trick.

I beg to differ. Verizon is as lousy as the rest. I've been telling a co-worker to just go into the store and try out the iPhone and the Android phones and get what you feel comfortable with. He will never play games, or care about all the things that I think make the iPhone great (mainly the app selection being a million times better). So I told him to just try it out. However, a bigger iFan than me convinced him to get an iPhone. Well, he went in earlier this week ready to get his iPhone and said that's what he wanted. As you can tell, he doesn't care too much about the phones, as he didn't even care about waiting for the 4S. Well, he left with an Incredible 2 because the VZW salesperson convinced him it was better. All they care about is their commissions. The guy was upgrading from a flip phone and didn't care about all the customization Android offers. He would have been better off without all the hassle Android offers.

And to make it worse, the phone was priced at like 229, but had a $50 MIR. Well, they were "willing to make an exception and offer him it for 179 with the same MIR. But he had to buy it then. Don't worry they kept telling him, you can return it within 14 days with no problems. They didn't mention the fact that there is a $35 restocking fee whatsoever. (I had to tell my coworker that.). Anyways, they continually pushed him into it, and even got a buddy VZA salesperson to help push him into buying it that time. Well, we went to the Best Buy website today, and saw that their great once in a lifetime opportunity of 179 with a MIR wasn't that great, considering Best Buy had it on sale for $99.

Oh and another story.... A couple months ago, I was actually in the store with another coworker who was getting the thunderbolt. The guy asked about a texting plan, and my buddy was like, yeah definitely. The only one he offered was the $20 unlimited. Didn't make any mention of anything else. It was only after my buddy was like, isn't there some $5 thing for like 250 texts? Then he was like, oh yeah, that's our unadvertised rate. Unadvertised rate? WTF? So you just screw people who don't need unlimited texting into unlimited texting because they don't know better?

AT&T bad? Maybe. But Verizon Wireless is no better. They are out to screw their customers as much as anyone. Not only that, but their rates are higher (have you seen the taxes and fees as well? How come no other carrier has the same extravagant list of fees, if they are supposedly government regulated fees?), and they offer less tiers of services. Their cellular signal may be the most consistent around the country, but their customer service blows like the rest of them. At least when AT&T got rid of $30 unlimited, they offered a $25 2GB plan. Verizon? They got rid of their $30 unlimited, and offered a $30 2GB plan. Thanks Verizon. Really helping out the customers. I realize both companies care about money a lot more. But Verizon is pretty damn bad based on my experiences.

Just a brief update: I went to the store this morning, unable to cancel but went ahead and bought a full price phone under some fancy pants procedure that the fantastic store staff was willing to do for me, so that I will end up paying the normal upgrade price. Anyway...

I got home, out of curiosity I checked my status and it wasn't backordered. At 930p cdt I got tracking email, it's delivering tomorrow. LOL, I feel kinda stupid for going to the store now....but as far as I knew it was going to be a month. All the reps told me to expect a month wait. I placed my order for a white 64gb on att's site, on the 7th at 10am cdt, no status changes until today.

I'm still aggravated, but only because I wasted my time because att couldn't tell me anything about when to expect the package. I wouldn't have freaked about an extra day or two...a month is another story.

So, my preorder is going back tomorrow.

I would go as far as to say VZW is better. You're coming from a biased perspective so any answer than the one ATT is giving you is going to sound better. I've learned that customer service for any ONE person is based only on THEIR perspective.

It's like this. If you go to Seattle, and everyday an earthquake happens, you would assume it was a normal occurance. Howevever, if I lived there 5 years before you then I'd have a difference perspective if I experienced NO earthquakes. Crappy analogy...but...:D

Point is WE CHOSE to get an INDEMAND phone. You could have certainly gotten a Galaxy S2 if you wanted....but you did not.

Verizon's not gonna make your booboo better. At all. If you go into your local VZW store then there's a change there isn't a lot of VZW subscribers (or iPhone users) in your area. Remember, DROID was VZW/Motorola's response to the iPhone (remember iDon't?).

Just wait it out a little. A few more days it should calm down. Just ride out the storm a wee bit longer.....then get mad!

LOL. I don't understand how difficult it is to preorder. I got my order in with ATT at 1am on the 7th and the phone came at 11am on the 14th.

Simple.

Some of us have yet to get our phones...what don't you understand? Some people go thrown out of the loop.

Happy for ya. Looks like many of us have not enjoyed the luck that you have.

I ordered my phone within the first hour that the pre-order came available on the 7th...I'm still waiting on m phone.

Around 9:30 PM I got my tracking number, I am getting my phone shipped by Fedex Saturday morning.
I thought about going down to the store, but I decided, meh I can wait a week.

Either way, I am a happy camper.

Now let's hope that restoring my apps to the new phone is much easier than upgrading to ios5. The iOS 5 firmware upgrade was not so smooth for me, having to redo my apps arrangement, and recopy a lot of files.

But I am generally happy with how fast iOS 5 is on my iPhone 4 (Which I'm giving to my sister...)

I was told by ATT this morning that I would get a tracking number email today and the phone would ship tomorrow, Saturday. (ordered Friday morning on the phone, had problems not getting the T and C via email, eventually did but they said they reissued my order which is why I did not get it today).

The order never shows up online although I have that one early confirmation email, so I cannot check it.

Why did I believe them? It is now 10:30 PM PDT - I don't think I'm getting a tracking email this late...

So after going through about 9 calls to ATT to handle this messy pre-order, do I want to stand in line at a store tomorrow and hope they will work it out?

I will add, though, that after 20+ hours of stressful over-the-phone issue management and 4 hours of dealing with my botched preorder in the store, the women was pretty great at saving me money and throwing in some extras for my trouble. After, she offered me $200 off our first bill and waved the $150 in new phone activation fees.

So, overall, F for AT&T Customer Service over the phone, and an A for in-store help. And, I'd definitely say that it pays to be patient and appreciative even when you are being firm in your in-person demands.

Yep, me too. Still "backordered" here
