My Cancellation and Store Order

AT&T did it for me at the store where I originally pre-ordered last friday.

They were real cool about it. I had three managers assist me and were very helpful.

They were having some issues after they had cancelled my three orders, mainly because the computers were jammed. Once the cancellation cleared they went to the back and got me three upgraded devices (I had originally ordered 16GB models, (1 white / 2 black) but they had run out of the 16GB whites so I upgraded all three to 32GB.

Again, no runaround or excuses. They were very cool and straightforward.
Entire transaction took about 45 minutes. I was also able to purchase AppleCare+ this time (it was not available last week).

All in all, it turned out OK for us. Had I had a concrete shipping date I may not have gone this route had I known what to expect, but since I was still back-ordered up until 1 or 2 PM this afternoon, it was a no-brainer for me since it could be several more days or several weeks, again, w/o a shipping date or even movement on the order that is impossible to estimate.

I think that AT&T has done a decent job for the most part, but they seriously need to revamp their whole ticketing and notification system and lease serious additional capacity from Amazon Web Services or MS Azure to get additional computing power as needed to deal with these issues. (I'm an IT director. Companies do this all the time when they anticipate a very large influx of traffic, like Black Friday or other heavy seasonal periods when they expect their systems to get heavily pounded).

They also need to unify their tracking system so that everyone can go to a single place to check orders. Right now they have one for Premier (which as a Premier customer it never worked for me), another one for personal (that works for Premier for not for other folks), another one for wireless users, large business, different phone numbers based on customer type, dissimilar systems for checking store bought, online, and phone orders.

To top it all off, the ambiguous order status codes do nothing but create confusion which overload the already over-worked CSRs with endless calls and chats from people that cannot decipher them. This compounds the issues since they keep taxing their databases and I believe it may be one of the reasons their status updates take days to update.

Sorry for the rant. I sincerely hope that everyone that is in the same situation is able to resolve it at the store.

UPS says they have a package for me, but no tracking info. This is the first time I tried "Mail Innovations" and the first time it worked. At least now I know it is with UPS. I appreciate your response, thanks!

You are welcome! Same here! Now lets hope we can get tracking info by tomorrow or monday!

I finally reached someone that had the ability to cancel my pre-order and reset my upgrade eligibility which went into effect immediately.

The bad news? The Apple store stopped accepting customers for the iPhone 4S waiting line for the night (half hour before closing) so I gotta go there tomorrow. They seemed to a have a lot (talking about stacks and stacks of iPhones of all colors and GBs on display) so hopefully they didn't manage to sell out of them within the hour or 2 after I left with my brother's 16GB black.

Nothing. Ordered 10:30 Friday 10/7 morning. 64GB Black. Confirmation email within 30 minutes. No changes to anything or any communication at any point.

I have the same issue, same phone, same order time (PST). I've been calling them a bunch, and it just keeps making me sad. However, I called them today and they said my phone would be shipping out tomorrow.

Basically, the order system was so overloaded, that my order did not hit their system until 10/9 (which is what the order status look up page shows, not the premiere tracking page).

I just looked at the standard order status look up page, and my back order quantities have changed from 1 to 0. So it looks like it will ship out tomorrow, and I will probably get it Monday.

Ordered mine on 10/7 10:00 AM EST in AT&T store. Received confirmation within an hour. I have received nothing since other than text message today thanking me for my order. Order status page still says backordered 1 but has order date as 10/7. Very frustrating, but just going to wait.

It really is too bad. The salesperson at the AT&T store made this preorder thing out to be like a dream. He even had me come into the store a few days prior to 10/7 and place my order then (I did not want to lose my unlimited data) so that the store would order it for me first thing on 10/7.

Well, this will be my last post on this thread as I have been playing for a couple of hours with my brand spanking new iPhone 4S. Like many here I got caught in the AT&T pre-order limbo. I ordered on 10/7, my order got into the system on 10/8, and aside from the initial order confirmation I got no other communication. At 3pm today I decided to call and cancel the order, as I had read multiple posts of people finding plenty of phones in the retail stores, and I called my local AT&T store and sure enough they had plenty.

When I called the 800 number they refused to cancel my order, as it was already "in progress", even though I had a 1 on the backorder column. My order had 4 phones, 2 iPhones and 2 dumb phones, and all 4 were showing backordered, which is impossible. I decided to buy the 4 phones from my local store and just refuse delivery or return the ones I was shipped.

Well, let me tell you, Jeff at the AT&T store I went to has restored my faith in AT&T. Yes, I know many of you here hate AT&T, but I found a GEM of an AT&T employee who cared enough to TAKE CARE OF ME. He cancelled my online order, cancelled the port of the 4 lines, and processed my new order, giving me my corporate discount and everything. It took over an hour to process the whole transaction, and I could over hear him on the phone talking to somebody, the manager came over and I am sure they had to go through some gymnastics to do what they did. It may have been out of policy, but they took care of a customer. They guaranteed 4 lines left their competitor and came over with a 2 year commitment to AT&T. I couldn't be happier or more satisfied with the attention and service I received at that store.

So good luck to all of you who haven't received your phone yet, and I wish you encounter Jeff or someone like him who cares about his customers and brings credit and good karma to the company he represents. AT&T needs to clone Jeff....

Siri, beam me up! :D

This. It looks like they just moved me from backordered to processing. I don't care that much about three days. I'm pissed about the lack of communication and potentially waiting three weeks.

Talked to AT&T and they said my order is "parked" but my order made it into the 7-14 day range. So...should I expect it next week?

I would try to go to a store first thing in the AM and cancel it, and order from the store if they have stock. That's what i did (I had ordered from the store also on 10/07, still showing a backordered status of '1' until today early afternoon).

Good luck. Hope you get it resolved.

Good news...

My 32GB white arrived today via UPS.
My other order for a 16GB White showed backordered 1 until about 3:30PM PDT today when it changed to backordered 0. Then at around 6:30PM, it showed a FedEx tracking number. Now it's set to be delivered tomorrow before 12:00PM.

Hey guys, my order was just changed from pending shipment to shipped.
It should arrive tomorrow noonish, though probably later.
Just a thumbs up to anyone else waiting on their order. :'D

Premier order, potentially a happy ending tommorrow?

(For the TL;DL crowd: Ordered 10/7@5:32AM via Premier, backordered, sad boat passenger all day, off backorder, shipped FedEx priority overnight w/ Saturday delivery)

So I (like many) have been lurking this post all day, getting more and more depressed about the lack of my White 16GB 4s. My story, for those dealing with a "Premier" order:

Ordered 10/7 @ 5:32 AM via the Premier website, received the email minutes later saying delivery 10/14. Set it to ship to the office so that it could be signed for if needed.

Today, no order updates, still "In Progress" with a backordered quantity of 1.

After seeing all the "cancel if it's backordered and get it in the store" posts I head to the store closest to me at noon. The store can't cancel/reverse the online order (so they say), so I call Premier support from the store, I spend over an hour on the phone dealing with "Peggy" and waiting for a supervisor to cancel my order and reverse the upgrade. I finally give up and tell the helpful guy at the store he can stop holding "my" phone.

I speak to other people on the phone and via Premier chat some tell me it's in the warehouse waiting a shipping label, other people tell me 7-14 days, some tell me 3-4 week. So useless.

Around 4PM I see the few people say they saw their phones change out of backordered, so I refresh the screen and tada, no longer back ordered.

I figure at this point there is no way im going to get the order cancelled so I resign myself to waiting for a tracking number.

Checked again moments ago and I have a FedEx tracking number and it's leaving Memphis, TN for delivery tomorrow before noon with priority overnight. Normally I would be estatic, but the office building is closed on Saturday. But, I've decided that rather than wait for Monday, I'll be camped out in front waiting for it...hoping the driver doesn't "know better" and skip the stop all together.

So, fingers crossed, and for those of you dealing with the Premier fiasco, keep an eye on the order status as they do seem to still be updating, and DO seem to be doing Saturday FedEx delivery.

what was your order status? before it got off backorder? 7-14 days? 14-21? 21-28?

I'm glad to see a lot of you got some satisfaction at the AT&T stores. Some of these managers really stepped up. Unfortunately the store I preordered from in Westfield NJ has an ass of a manager that wouldn't budge. They will pay for that at the next go around.

and 1 more thing. how did you order it? in store, online?

Tracking number? I would just be happy to be able to track my order on the order status page. Even the dreaded backorder would be better than not being able to check at all.

I'm sorry it will come I was backordered for the last week and I ordered at 8am on the 7th. It will come

Biggest Headache EVER

After about 20 phone calls throughout the course of the week trying to track my phone down (as of this afternoon, I still hadn't received any tracking information and it was listed as backordered, despite ordering at 4AM on 10/7), I spoke with a rep who told me that if I find phones in stock in a store, they could do an order reversal and I could just purchase new iphones.

When I got to the store, I was told that order reversals / cancellations for preorders can only happen in-store if the preorders were placed in the store. I then was on the phone for about an hour with AT&T alongside the store rep helping me attempting to cancel my service so I could buy the new phones they had set aside for me, only to first be told that I never signed a Terms and Conditions email (which I'd never gotten, and which no one who'd assured me my order was all set this week mentioned) and then told that in order to get new phones I had to pay full retail price and not even get my phone numbers ported over until the backordered ones shipped.

Finally, the wonderful woman helping me at the AT&T store made some phone calls and somehow got the porting of our preordered phones cancelled and activated three new phones with our numbers. According to her, there had been an issue with our credit information in setting up a new account (something that not one of 20 people had said anything about) and that if I had waited, the phones probably never would have shipped.

Moral of the story: I will never, ever preorder anything from AT&T again, or listen to any of the clueless customer support reps.

If you, like me, seem to still be backordered for no reason online, it might be worth a visit to your local AT&T store to sort things out--if not to buy new phones, at least to make sure there aren't any problems holding the order up as was the case with my order.

what was your order status? before it got off backorder? 7-14 days? 14-21? 21-28?

I'm not sure. My mom ordered it for me actually. I wish I could provide more detail. But, I remember checking my order in two different ways and one way was more detailed than the other. From what my mom said, it was backordered but, when I checked a couple hours ago it was set to pending shipment and finally it had a tracking code.

I wish I could offer more detail. I just know she ordered it on the 7th if that helps.
--------

and 1 more thing. how did you order it? in store, online?

My mom said she ordered it online. :') I hope that helps!

i just did the "fedex trick" dont know if it worked... i typed my number and nothing. typed my name and showed a package shipped out today in KY suppose to arrive on 10/18 but the package is 21 pounds... i dont think thats me. can anyone tell me how much their package weighed?

Waiting...

Ordered in-store at ATT at 10:30 EST last Friday. Was told at the time of the order I had already missed the opening day availability, so it would be 14-21 days. It's so annoying to read about folks that ordered several days after me that already have shipping notices. Mine still reads the same: Item Status - Processing, Shipping Status - Backordered. Although, I did get a text today thanking me for ordering - what the heck does that mean? Why a week after the order?

I'm changing plans, keeping my unlimited data, etc., and due to the complications I'm undecided on whether to go back to the store and try to cancel. Maybe it will ship next week and I'll get it by Friday. I'm very curious to see whether AT&T ships some of those that just missed the cutoff early next week, or if it's really going to be another 7-14 days when they have phones in stores all along.

I just hate that each release day it's a crapshoot on which is the best way to order - online ATT, instore ATT, online Apple, instore Apple - I always seem to pick the worst option. Out of 5 attempts, I've managed to get an iPhone on release day ONCE.

I had to pick up my phone from the FedEx office. My phone didn't come with that little needle to take out the sim card.
