They changed Webkit framework to Webkit2. But Webkit2 has loads of problems, although it's more advanced than Webkit. It seems like they rushed it.

For example, With Safari 5.0, when you try to load lots of pages/tabs, then the application itself is not responsive or extremely slow. But in Safari 5.1, you can always use the application menu with full responsiveness even if tons tabs/pages are loading.

That's because the application and the web processes are separated in the API now.

But like I said, the framework is still buggy and it has tons of issues under heavy load. It made some things better and many other things worse. Just give it time.

Damn, I hope this fixes them too! That is the most annoying thing wrong with Safari for me. Fingers crossed. We'll see if this does the trick

It doesn't. Those major issues will be fixed in 5.2 probably, and not with some small update like this.

Restarting the Mac.

Software Update will.... it was just released and hasn't propagated to all the servers yet.

We have not had severe thunderstorms in quite some time, so I have not had to shut down my Mac in a long time ... except to fix the Safari hanging and quitting 'unexpectedly' problems.

Also, the page now works at Apple Support.

System Requirements
OS X Lion 10.7.2
Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Security Update 2011-006

Previously I have asked what the reasons are that should prompt me to upgrade to OSX 10.6 or 10.7, but no reply that I have read. Anyone have a reason that you would like to share?

Bummer, I was excited to see the update as I figured they would have addressed this issue as it's been a problem since Lion was released. Oh well, hopefully sometime soon......

...but does it fix the annoying random Tab reloads?

Yeah, they should use realtime Wkdm-memory compression, if they want to save memory. The tab reloads are a big hinderance. I use more than 100+ tabs and the tab reloads make no sense at all. I can live with large swap files on a 8 GB+ machine (Safari up to v5.0.x), but the reloads are just stupid.

Apple has a long history, regarding compression algorithms, which can save space/memory and can improve restore/read speeds from all media types (RAM/VM/SSD/HDD):
- RLE compression for PICT screenshots (System v7.0.0-v9.2.2)
- QuickTime header data compression (v3.0.2+)
- Apple compressed resources in Mac OS 7.0.0-9.2.2 including Apple applications, like ResEdit
- Window buffer compression (Mac OS X 10.1.5+)
- Hibernate file (and ARD-network traffic?) compression via WKdm, a statistical and dictionary based codec (very fast, realtime)
- File system compression (Mac OS X 10.6+) via zlib (no LZMA)

Won't load Google. Firefox will. Was hoping this would fix this annoying problem. Will try Chrome for awhile and check that out.

You are kidding right? Apple abandoned PPC 5 years ago...

PPC Macs are still useful. I would still be running my Power Mac G4 Quicksilver every day had the power supply not gone.

Just because Apple no longer support it doesn't mean it isn't useful. Some people can't afford the latest and greatest.

So I guess "white flash" is the official name of the issue right? I was experiencing this issue but didn't know what to call it, and now I know.

Anyway, I have been experiencing it on certain websites thinking it was the site and not Safari. I'll find out in a couple of days when I do the update and do some (not so routine) maintenance on my iMac.

Agreed.

My G4 notebook served me well, correction, still serves me well to this day. It was my primary computer until I bought my iMac a few months ago.

I still use my notebook as an ultra-low-powered netbook. It does word processing and other low-level tasks really well. Actually, I used it to create a short presentation with Keynote for a class the other week.

I am currently planning on buying a MacBook Pro after the Ivy Bridge refresh but I'm really thinking twice about doing so. The reason being that the G4 still does exactly what I need it for when it comes to classwork.

I thought the "white flash" was related to problems I had with the flash plugin. Guess not.

Ah well, good riddance to that bug! :)

Ha! No, not that it matters, but I did go over 60 days once on my old MBP without a restart. I guess I like the feeling that I know OS X doesn't need to be restarted every so often as compared to my Win7 PC at the office.

Grats. I've gone that long on a Beige G3 with an unsupported version of OS X and multiple hardware hacks. Just restart.

Safari still sick

Safari still does not work reliably. Drops dead on Javascript errors, causes display problems which can only be recovered from by closing down Safari.

Safari is a complete mess, is really too buggy to be used since Lion

Safari on the Mac with Lion is a piece of crap. Period!

Power PC is not dead

Not to beat a dead horse, but Apple supports a 10-year-old Windows OS in Windows XP.

Yet, their own G5's that were sold brand-new 5 years ago have been abandoned.

I notice this mostly on my IPad.

God, I really hope it fixes the issue where the back button reverts to an older version of a web page. So annoying.

Which brings up the question of app updates for iPads. The capability is apparently there to update something like Safari so I'm hoping we get these incremental updates out of the major update cycle. Safari is surprisingly nice on an iPad but, that reverting to the old web page is really frustrating.

Honestly though I don't see it much on the Mac. That might be due to using the Mac differently.

Did you try a cache reset or other functions reset?

Menu bar>>Reset Safari.
