I think the reason Macs are so addictive is because they are just well made machines with solid software. I find using Windows machines to be a bit like playing with a "Where's Wally?" jigsaw puzzle. Everything is chaotic and even when you finish it, it looks chaotic.

But the Mac and, more importantly, the new Mac experience is because they are inviting. They are beautiful, stable and easy to use. And when you have you first new Mac moment, you need to lock the door and be alone with it for a few hours. :)

My question is basically... can I still use the Kingston 1GB memory if the update is possibly gonna use two 256mb rather than one 512mb?? I am kinnda new at this so I would really appreciate any comments.

I wanna wait, but I would not like getting stuck with 512mb that can't get upgraded :p

If it's like the Powerbook, then yes (2 x 256MB). You'll have 256MB soldered into the machine and you'll add your 1GB stick to get 1.25GB. You'll just have a 256MB stick left over.

The other option is a 512MB soldered in plus a free slot. This would allow 1.5GB of RAM. Though I would this this is less likely.

Don't worry about it because I'll be doing exactly the same. I want a maxed out RAM machine :)

Hmm - I know what you mean. I had to do some word processing on a Wintel the other day and it genuinely made me angry! The damn thing asked me if I wanted to update the firewall, so I clicked no. Then asked about anti-virus, so I said no... On and on it went! Each time I went to close the pop up box I went for the left-corner first  ... And Word was even worse! I just wanted to type a letter, but first I had to select a style, then search fo a template, then a header design and sort the tab spacing... In the end I gave up and wrote it in Hotmail, saved it to my desktop and printed it that way! Spose it was still Microsoft though... Nevermind!

The stability is definately the selling point for me. My PC died (it was only young... lol) because of the viruses on my network. This is because it didn't have ENOUGH anti-virus - it already had one... The 'net stopped working, which was a bit of a blow...
We'd starting using eMacs at Uni, and I saw this one (an eMac 700mhz) for £200, and thought it'd help me to decide if I wanted another Apple... I never tried the internet connection in it because I knew that the PC took two hours to configure and I couldn't be bothered to do it all again. One night though, I was bored and thought I'd give it a whirl... Plugged the cable in, and up came the Apple page! No prepping the machine or anything - just plug and play :) and now any Wintel machine can... :)

I know it's a beautiful feeling. Same thing happens with Sony gear. Ever brought a PSP? :D

Hahahaha! That didn't take long. Just don't get caught up in the "I'll now wait for a Powerbook update" wave or you'll never get one!!

Ah yes, that feeling of euphoria that overwhelms us when love is in the air. Oprah may need to do a show about how people feel about their Macs -- after all, she recently devoted an hour to various behavioral problems experienced by her "daughter," a cocker spaniel named Sophie. That had to be one incredible labor and delivery.

Then Dr. Phil ("I know everything") McGraw can put his own unique spin on it: "Mac users: Endless fascination with great technology OR unhealthy obsession with white plastic and anodized aluminum?"

I'd say both to Dr. Phil.. Dude, that guy sucks! How on earth american show business can make money out of guy who talks only common sense?! And more surprisingly, how they could market him to one of Finnish channels? No-one watches that show here, no-one!

My golly gosh he is awful.Well not awful. It's just he talks, as you say, in a way that suggests the bleeting obvious.

I asked a guy at the Apple store about this too and he told me that they do share the same screen. But I've noticed the same thing too. The 12" PB screen seems less washed out than the 12" iBook's screen. And the 15" PB screen seems a lot brighter than either of them.

I noticed the same thing the first few times I visited the Apple store. This weekend, I figured it out: the PB's hinge allows the screen to tilt back farther, which makes the screen look better when you're comparing them side-by-side on those tables at the store. For a better comparison, tilt the whole iBook backwards and you'll see that the screen is identical to the PB screen.

Last Saturday I found a refreshed 12" iBook at my local Apple store for $750 (I posted about this already).

On Friday I took it back. The 30GB hard drive just isn't enough for anyone who has a decent iPhoto library and plans on getting an iPod. BTW, the laptop is for my wife, and will be getting an iPod Photo later this year.

So the Apple store took it back no problem. They completely understood about the Hard drive issue.

I went home, about to order a 12" iBook BTO w/80GB hard drive and built-in Bluetooth when my wife tells me that she wasn't thrilled with the look of the white plastic. Ugh. We (including the kids) jumped in the car and went back to the Apple store later that night. We left with a 12" Powerbook w/combo drive & 60GB hard drive. I can't believe we went from an unbelievable deal on an iBook (that turned out not to be useable to us) to spending $600 more on a Powerbook.

I'm happy, though. I don't need to spend the additional money on a RAM upgrade for a while, the Hard drive is big enough to allow for a significant iPhoto library growth, and room for an expanding iTunes library as well.

Congrats on that purchase, same PB I have. My music collection is not huge (maybe 6-7 gb) but i I have all my music, and almost a gb of photos on their too, and still lots of room to play. You'll also notice the 5400 rpm hdd is a plus too. I finally think of my pb as a desktop replacement (in my case).

Our iPhoto library is 3.5GB and growing at 1.5-2GB per year! This PowerBook (I'm typiing on it right now out on the patio) is a desktop replacement--it replaced a 15" iMac G4 700Mhz that we've had for 2 years.

Thanks for the reminder about the faster HDD. It's nice to know exactly what we paid more for. ;)

Wait until you hit 5000 to 6000 pics with your photolib. Then it will get really slow.

Arrrrgh!!! Read the sig now...

I got on the Apple site to change the order THREE minutes after it was dispatched! And now I'm dissapointed that I'm "only" getting an iBook... It's soooo dumb that I feel that way... lol! Nevermind- I'd never be able to truly test a PowerBook anyway, or even the iBook for that matter...
(Lunja goes off to convince himself he's done the right thing...)

But for real, there has to be an update before the school year begins. It would be suicide for Apple to have the same iBooks for the Fall of 2005 classes as they did in 2004. Most other mfgs, ie Dell, refresh most of their products as soon as new technology is out. The iBook is due and so is the PB which is what I want.

No not really. The current revison was released on October 26th which is way after back to school. But even for the people buying in August of last year for back to school, that last revison was only released in April. There were TWO revisions last year. This year it seems that there will be ONE.

True, but if there will be only one revision this year (quite possible as maybe Apple is slowing down due to the anticipated move to Intel), it has to happen during the summer (I hope), before the 2005 back to school season begins. Even if the October 2004 revision ‘came too late’ for that school season, they only had 4-6 month old iBooks in July-September 2004; whereas we are already at 7+ and aren’t quite in back to school territory yet.

Ok, suppose the speculation that a new iBook will be introduced at NECC is true, and it happens on the 28th or thereabouts. I have been counting on getting the $100 educational coupon, however it expires on the 25th.

So, if I go ahead and buy an iBook on the 25th and use the coupon, will I be able to return it in exchange for the new iBook that comes out on the 28th? Or is it likely that a new rebate will be in place and I should just wait?

New iBooks Next Tuesday?
I guess not.. :(

Damn you Apple, come on so I can buy your damned consumer goods! You need money, right?! Well bring it on! No-one wants to buy laptops with tech from yesteryear! Apple is supposed to be a company for trendy & smart people, not for people who like queues & waiting! 2 more weeks, my studies will start and I will be bearing Sony Vaio to classes instead of your Book!

i am getting a little tired of waiting myself. the only problem i see is that apple still pushes the powerbook on its site. you dont see much for the ibook, they know it is at the end of its life cycle. but i dont think the powerbooks are yet. the problem lies in that whatever upgrades they provide the ibook, it will put it too close to the 12' PB model. So, unless they release new powerbooks along with new iBooks (very unlikely) they will, at the very least, be forced to offer some sort of discount to move the low end powerbooks.

whatever the case, i hope they hurry the f up. i have my money set aside and everything, i just refuse to buy a new Mac that isnt Core compatible. that is my sticking point right now.

I don't think we see the first Mactels before 06-06-06 because Jobs told the developers so. I mean it is really important this time that the developers know by when they have to get their products shipping with universal binaries.

Did Jobs really say no Intel Macs until June? I thought the statement was that there would be Intel Macs *within* a year.

Yes, you can do that. I've thought about doing the very same thing. If you pick up an iBook on the 25th and *DO NOT* open it, you can return it for 14 days without penalty (please verify the 14 days, don't take my word as gospel).

I'm not sure the rebate will be replaced, but if it is, it would seem like we should expect the Cram and Jam ($200 off laptop + iPod) along in early July.

You're correct. Most folks expects Mactels (PB/iBook) by Jan with the release of Yonah.
