END OF LINE CLEARANCES?????

Just been on the Applestore clearance/refurbished page (US)
There's loads of stock on there!
Are Apple shifting old models to make room for new? It certainly looks like it.
$450 off an ibook isn't a bad discount :D

Unfortunately the UK Applestore is lagging a bit behind with a few powermacs and an ipod that they simply can't shift! Going to keep checking though as the page is open EVERY DAY until the 25th (usually just open on weds).
but come on apple 33% off macs in the US and not much here??!!!

Good sign though for an iminent release or three :)

The article didn't say a word about the iBook. Or am I missing something?
"The chip will likely begin showing up in Apple laptop-based systems shortly thereafter" is the quote that points to it being put in the iBooks.

On another note, maybe the title of this thread will come true for next tuesday. Here's hoping :)

Just read on appleinsider that new freescale processors are on its way for the iBook. They should appear in iBooks around.... October...

But will apple update the ibook sooner, ie next monday/tuesday with more memory and improved graphics card? or run the risk and wait until october?
The education market is important and the ibook sale might be needed to keep apple figures up in the run up to the intel switch

I think apple will bump up the ibook next tuesday, ready for NECC
The powerbook could get the freescale processor in October
and switch to intel in February/April next year.

Remember Steve did say that there were plenty more powerpc products in the pipeline :)

I agree that we will se the update next week. If it was going to be in October then they would have been updated in April, (as they normally are,) with better RAM and VRAM. I think the rason they weren't is that an update was planned for the summer, (as Apple have little else to update,) so they wanted to give the iBook space to expand in to.

Seems to make sense.
- Upgrade ibooks now, same processors, more memory/video
- Powerbooks, new ppc chips, october/nov
- New powerbooks in June, or earlier, next year - leaving the ibook to take over the fast ppc chips until their switch to intel Sept/oct 2006

The waiting is driving me insane. But after diverting my attention to the Powerbooks, I've decided to stick with the iBook. And maybe go for a Powerbook by the Rev B intels.

I just want an iBook so I can upgrade the hell out of it!!!!! :D Still, 11 weeks after initially deciding I wanted one.... I have to hang in there.

I'm in exactly the same position! My sister bought an ibook about 5 weeks ago - another reason why I want the upgrade

Hehehe. There's some motivation right there. Just the joy of saying "32VRAM - that was like... sooo last year!" God, I hope they update the VRAM or else my waiting has all been in vain!

isnt that kind of saying that this offer can not be used with the standard educational discount?

sorry to be a broken record, but....anyone?

For over two months (since April), every Tuesday everybody expects the all new and improved iBook, but they aren't coming. But hey, every next week is a special event, and they'll sure update the iBook then, won't they? Exactly. They don't. So I am not expecting an update till September or October, maybe during the Paris Expo. We might see a major upgrade of the iBook then, but not in June, July or August.

And don't get me wrong, I'm waiting for the updated iBook too, already since April, and I'll probably buy the new one the day it's announced. But to be realistic, I don't see any updates till September/October.

But we keep hoping, of course ;)

I understand what you mean. Still - I would wait another two weeks. Could be worth it.
My waiting time will never mean money, but soon I will leave my home and start studying. And after that time means knowledge. And even money isn't as valuable as knowledge.

One of these days this post will be correct, unless of course Apple comes out and updates on a Monday!? or Wednesday! Oh well, more waiting... And by the way:

How do you upgrade the hell out of an iBook? Do you just mean upgrading the RAM? or is there something else you can do to upgrade it?

Anyone thought of the nightmare scenario in which we only get a minor speed bump and 512MB?

I'm not an expert on notebook construction but maybe changing the videocard or adding vram is more complex than doing the above?

And if apple is aiming at some drastic changes (design?formfactor?) when intel processors are introduced, then why bother investing in this final ppc ibook? Or do i sound pessimistic now?

I just have to think they are going to update the ibooks before the start of school. Stupid business decision on their part if they wait until Paris.

I've been waiting for around 3 months now to switch. Steve J., don't you want my business???

The other possibility is that Apple will wait to put the 7448 in the Powerbook before they update the iBook. Although, admittedly, your scenario seems more likely because of the fact that Powerbooks were updated earlier this year, but iBooks were not.

They have to keep investing in the PPC machines to maintain interest in them while people are anticipating the new Intel machines. If they don't release any decent upgrades to the PPC machines over the next year then many people will simply avoid buying anything until the Intel machines are on the market.

Well, if I had to guess, I would say they would invest in a ppc iBook now because....ummm...maybe they want to sell their products? You can always say why invest now when there will be better things on the market in a year or two. Even though apple is switching proccesors, both ppc, and intel will be supported in years to come. So the reason to invest in an iBook now, or really at any time, is so that they will sell.

I've actually been planning on purchasing an iBook for about 6 months to a year now, and I haven't because I've been too afraid of what might happen like a week or so after I purchase it (it would be my luck that they would update the iBook as soon as I bought it).

I'm looking for advice... What does everyone think I should do? I can't wait much longer.

Having read that Apple are around 2% of Freescale's production, I'm starting to get a little confident that they have made enough 7448s to satisfy Apple for a new iBook or Mac Mini in the near future.

Well, I'm bloody hoping that they have, because I want to get one within the next two weeks for my job! More people are coming into the company, and I won't be able to hold onto the dual 2.3GHz G5 with 20" cinema display all the time :(

I'm waiting until the 28th. I'll order on the 29th regardless. I have to set myself some deadline.

This was posted in another thread but I thought it might be more applicable in this thread.

Also here's the picture of the widescreen ibook (How realistic does this look or is it just a good photoshop job?)

Argh! If this is true, then do I buy the iBook that I /need/ at the end of this month, or simply say 'sod it' and see if I can get hold of a refurb or something instead?

I think the word is 'evil' :(
