So, if I go ahead and buy an iBook on the 25th and use the coupon, will I be able to return it in exchange for the new iBook that comes out on the 28th? Or is it likely that a new rebate will be in place and I should just wait?

I think that's the logic behind the NECC release (we hope). The discount is there to shift old stock and make way for the new iBooks.

So, you'll have to take a risk. Take the discount with the current iBooks or wait and and see if in non-discount times the new iBooks come out. Then there's the third option - No update and no more discount.

Did Jobs really say no Intel Macs until June? I thought the statement was that there would be Intel Macs *within* a year.

I think he said "when we meet again we will have the first Mactels in the market."

For Apple it is important that the devs get their products out with Universal Binaries on time. If they need them by January my guess he would have told them so.

You're correct. Most folks expects Mactels (PB/iBook) by Jan with the release of Yonah.

Good. Cause I'm one of those people expecting an (announced) PB at the conference in early January.

If it was no Intel's for a year, I would have to reevaluate my current purchase plans.

It could be that they are just cleaning their inventories because of the quarter end. What I heard is that stock at resellers is quite high and Apple is just moving their inventory to the suppliers and get lower inventory by discounts.

Not that I don't hope for upgraded products and the iBooks are way overdue...

BTW - I don't see Mactels before 06.06.06 ( I said that before) but I could be wrong.

Releases of Apple apps with universal binaries will be a very strong hint.

couple questions...

the $100 rebate can be used WITH the standard educational discount, correct? i assumed that was the case, but in the fine print it seemed to say tht it couldnt be combined with any other offer. wasnt sure.

what are the chances that the ibook will be totally revamped, and that's why it's been so long? if its just a little more ram and a videocard, as much as i want my widgets to ripple, its not worth $100 to me. if it's a pretty serious overhaul, i can probably wait. any ideas?

AppleInsider is again reporting on an upcoming 14.1" HD iBook. Whether this will be the next upgrade is unclear.

I makes perfect sense for all the apple range to be widescreen soon.

"This is the year of HD" said steve jobs,
With this push to video I think Widescreen is necessary -
it would also give a GREAT selling point for all non-widescreen macs until intels are introduced.

So next monday/tuesday then for the ibook?

Wanted to buy a 14" iBook for my daughter going to college in August but have been trying to balance the rebate(s) from either Apple EDU or Amazon vs getting an update. Well, waited this long to get a Mac with Tiger guess I can wait another month to buy and hopefully get an update. One way or the other, July is it. Guess that means that the updates will come out right after I buy so everyone wait til August ;) .

Geez, this switch to Intel chips has got me wondering though. Seems like support for my G5, wife's iBook and daughter's coming iBook looks shaky.

I've got a G5 tower, and I'm looking getting an ibook as soon as the next update comes (hopefully better memory and video).

Do not hesitate in buying a mac in the next few months. The intel macs won't ship until next year and then I think it'll be Powermacs and the Powerbooks and possibly an even cheaper minimac. Steve Jobs asked developers to start shipping universal binaries (see below) that work on intelmacs and powerpcs for early next year. Can't see an intelmac before then.

Have a look at the Steve Jobs WWDC keynote speech on the Apple front page. It explains why your macs WONT be out of date for ages. There's plenty of life in the G4 and G5 machines yet. All existing software will run on Intel macs using something called Rosetta. And all new software for the Intel macs will be compiled in such a way that they will work on PowerPC and Intel - using files called universal binaries. Watch the video it's well worth it.

Where can I get details on the $100 rebate mentioned above? Is it expiring on June 25th?

If Rosetta is as good as Apple claims, then the developers don't need to rush to get their universal binaries ready in time for the release of the first Intel based products. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the new Intel notebooks are able to run native PPC applications much faster than the existing G4 models.

I suspect that Apple will be carefully monitoring their notebook sales over the next few months and will be keeping their options open as to the exact release date of the first Intel based notebooks.

I believe Apple will annouce new universal binaries apps before annoucing any new intel based hardware

Sorry to destroy your hopes, but from what I read the 3.6 GHz developer machine is about as fast as a 1 GHz PPC while running Rosetta. That means a app simulated with Rosetta is significatly slower.

And Rosetta can only translate apps that don't need Altivec or a G4 or higher. More restrictions apply but this is the most significant one.

SWITCHER'05,

i found a link to the rebate in this thread a few pages back. you might be able to do a google search, or just look through this thread. its gotta be in the last ten pages, shouldnt be hard to find.

not that anyone cares, but i'm just about to say screw waiting and just order a 12" ibook. if they come out with some awesome complete revamping, then i guess ill be screwed, but sitting on this PC is killing me. steaming hunk of ****.
ugh.

I understand what you mean. Still - I would wait another two weeks. Could be worth it.

Ditto. A 64 meg graphics card alone would be worth it.
They new touch pad would be very nice.
Imagine a new form factor or even illuminated keyboard for the larger model.

Interesting. This is a good argument in favour of buying a PPC machine now, for two reasons:
- As you point out, we won't see the first Intel machines on the market until developers have had a reasonable chance to get their universal binaries ready.
- PPC machines will perform well with universal binaries, while Intel machines will struggle with legacy applications. Therefore, the PPC will be better supported in the forseeable future.

anybody know if the $100 rebate can be used in conjunction with the standard educational discount?

Which iBook are you planning on buying? Stear clear from the off-the-shelf 12". The 30GB drive just isn't big enough for anyone, IMO. That would mean you'd have to do a build-to-order 12". BTO machines can't be exchanged.

If you can wait, do it. I decided not to wait and ended up with a Powerbook for my wife. It was a LOT more expensive, but no biggie. I know stepping up to a Powerbook would have been almost impossible to do for me when I was a student. If I were you, I'd either wait until next week, or just go for the BTO iBook with an 80GB drive and call it a day.

"Apple education promotional bundle pricing, education institution pricing, and other education promotional offers supersede this offer.

This offer is not valid in conjunction with any other Apple promotion except as specifically permitted by the terms and conditions of such other offer or promotion. "

isnt that kind of saying that this offer can not be used with the standard educational discount?
