So it seems I got it to work without getting a new sim card and doing it over the phone. I did not turn on the iPhone 5. The rep told me to go on the website and go to switch a device. I did it through there and I had the option to keep unlimited data. It worked just fine. I called up Verizon after to make sure I still had unlimited and the dummy phone line had no data plan on it and was all confirmed.

This sounds promising, there are several stories starting to emerge of the overall plan working. Some have had to go into the store, some over the phone and now this one all on the web site.

If you don't mind, would you be able to go through the process step by step as there is a bunch of mis-information floating around and so it would be very helpful for all of us waiting to go through or are currently going through this process?

Logged into my account online. You then go to change device. You click on the line you want the iphone 5 on. They will then ask you for some information, sim card number and a few other things. You will have to then select a data plan and unlimited should be there as an option. Select unlimited and you should be done. I did not turn on the iPhone 5 until I did this.

I just want to confirm with those folks that activated the iPhone from the dummy phone line. It seems from what I read that it would with either require a new sim card or wait 24 hours before the iPhone can be re-activated to the separate line with the UDP.

My questions is: Once you activate the iPhone from the dummy line, where you able to immediately re-activate back the dummy phone (using the web portal)? I realize next step of transferring to the UDP line might take awhile but I just want to make sure that the dummy line (which is my mother-in-laws) line doesn't experience any down time.

I stand corrected. This just worked for me over the phone. I didnt open the box before i did it. It was crazy easy. When i went through the activation it used the dumbphone number but once it actually acyivated it went to the UDP number. Easy peasy.

So you clicked on "activate device" and not "switch"? When I click switch it says I must activate a new phone on that line before switching. Did you just activated it as new?

See screenshot below...which did you do?

Got my white iPhone 16gb in store. I canceled my pre order. Lol i walked in at 12:30 and was out in 30 min. Anyway i added a line in store. They tell me i have to call Verizon to send me another Sim card to switch back to my number. Called Verizon said they would and I'll get it Monday

My question is the same as Black's. When i click switch device i get "Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this line of service but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed with your device swap after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance." So did you call and get them to activate it first?

I just got back from my Verizon store and they told me the same exact thing. He stated that wait 24 hours and it will be reset. He was reading word for word what Verizon Corp told them in a email. Now it might be true as I doubt we were at the same store.

I was also told this at the Verizon store. That I have to activate it and then in 24 hours it will reset.

I went to activate/switch device. Then I clicked on the line I want to to have the iphone 5 on. Not the one I upgraded it on. Then you type in the info it asks you for and its pretty self explanatory after that. Like I said, I did not turn on the phone before it did this.

From that screen shot I used activate on that screen.

Dom, thanks for all your help. Impatiently waiting on the ups man to try it out. Will post how it went for me after.

Thanks DomLando. Seems like we're getting closer to finding out the best way to do this. Did you purchase through the Apple Store or Verizon? I'm wondering if it makes a difference.

I preordered the iPhone for my dumbphone line through the Apple Store (App Store App), and selected 2GB on the account when checking out. However, when I checked my Verizon account a few days later, the dumbphone line already had an extended contract date, but no data plan affiliated with it.

This thread really should be merged with this one, since they're talking about the same topic:
"Anyone on Verizon able to switch lines yet?"

I pre ordered online through Verizon.

Bought iphone 5 on new line on family plan, swapped ESN with dumbphone which took off data.
Verizon store had no sims. referred me to apple store.
Had to get a sim from apple store, they just handed it over. Activated the iphone 5 and sim on my line with the website, kept unlimited data no problem.

One of verizon guys at the apple store guys was upset, apparently i wasn't the first guy referred there by the vzw store for a sim. He called to have them stop.

Would the process work the same way if you're not using an upgrade associated with your account at all? IE if you got an upgrade from a friend who had one and was willing to give it to you so you could keep your UDP?

"DomLando" thanks for the feedback.

Did you by any chance re-log into your verizonwireless MyAccount to verify if your data plan next to your ip5 still shows to be unlimited?

Still says unlimited on my account online and when I called to verify, they verified it as well that I have unlimited and the dummy line has no data plan.

I just went into a Verizon store. They had a handful of iPhone 5's in stock. My line is not available for an upgrade but 3 other lines on our shared plan are. It has never been an issue before to do alternate upgrades. Verizon said they can not do the alternate upgrade right now because they do not have any extra sim cards. Is there ANY way to get around this? There are numerous stores with the iPhone 5 in stock that are close by and I would love to get one.
