Dang. VERY sorry to hear that some of you guys are having such issues. It's utterly ridiculous that the various stores treated this situation completely differently.

Just reminds me that customer service and good business practices are a thing of the past, for the most part.
 
I picked up mine with no issue @ like 3 pm. I also have another 64 gb silver verizon 5S waiting for me at westbury best buy that i can give to anyone on here (no up charge) if they want. I decided to go with a 32gb instead. If anyone wants to take my "preorder" let me know. I would just have to come with you to westbury best buy and cancel my order and than you can have my phone. Not looking for any $.

It depends on the City you purchased the device. I was charged the same and discussed this with the a number of employees and even the Apple Consultant who seemed clueless as he butted in and stated it was 18%.

For the most part it should be 9% with the exception of three cities in LA County. If you would like to verify your particular Sale Tax rate you can do so via the following link.

I started a thread on the BB forum and someone stated there is a CA e-recycling or eWaste fee. I don't believe there is one as it didn't show up as an item on the register when they were processing the activation and it is no where on the receipt. Even so it would only be $3 and should show up as a separate line item which as it is excluded from Sales Tax collection.

Now as far as who to complain to...I took this with a few people in store and ended with the Mobile area manager who tried his best to help rectify the situation. While he agreed it didn't look right he was only able to provide a partial adjustment. One of the other store associates who was trying to help suggested that I take this to the BBB rather then corporate or in addition to as this could affect a large number of customers.
 
ugh I went by best buy yesterday and they said they had a box of 32GB gold 5s for AT&T that were supposed to arrive yesterday or today. So they have me reserve one and as soon as they get there I will get an email.

After I get home I get a text from someone wanting to buy my 5 (had an ad on CL) So I sell it to him thinking that its no big deal since they are getting a box either today or by monday at the latest.

So now I am phoneless and I go by today and the mobile manager tells me they wont be getting any gold 5s until october...

I have no idea what to do now. grrr

I bough my iphone online from bestbuy.com and called their toll free number. They asked for the city of purchase, looked up the tax rate, verified I was overcharged, and refunded the tax to my credit card.
 
I was lucky I suppose. I found out which Best Buy locations were showing as Available for the 5S Verizon 64GB Space Gray. Picked one and wanted to get there when they opened. I strolled in around 10:10 and there were people already in line.

Guy in front of me was AT&T and wanted a 5S. The sales person checked her stock and said, "We have the 5C for AT&T." He turned around and said he would try elsewhere and that he wanted to stay with AT&T.

I noticed two guys getting price matches for their 64GB models. When my turn was up I got the last 64GB and had it price matched automatically. No big fuss over saying I wanted to keep unlimited and wanted to pay full price. No in store activation, but the phone was linked to my phone number. Tax was 6.75% on the $850.
 
More fun..

So I had an ironic turnaround in my 5s story. Today at noon EST, Best Buy called saying that my phone was in (after I called yesterday and confirmed that it wasn't..I'm guessing there was some confusion or that it came in on a later truck). Didn't cancel my ATT order as I'd gotten a confirm that it would ship in 7-14 business days, and I wanted to be sure I had a phone..

Went to BB, they got my phone out and started to work the order, and couldn't do the upgrade because there was "recent upgrade activity". Suspecting that it was related to the ATT order, I called CS, and they told me yes, that it was and that the order had shipped. I cked my email, and I'd gotten a shipment confirm and tracking WHILE I was sitting at BB. Lol.

In the end, ATT CS was VERY helpful and actually called FedEx and got the order held, returned my activation status, and I was able to walk out of BB with my phone and $50 GC. I thought for a few minutes I was going to "own" two 64GB 5Ss, neither of which I could have in my hands (For the weekend).

But in the end, it all worked out. Cool. Lol.

I was also told my best buy would be getting some in this week...hopefully it doesn't take until October!

I searched for them on BestBuy.com

Using the mobile website doesn't let you "check stores", but the full website does. I don't know how often it refreshes which is why I took a chance. You can probably also call to verify. It's pretty much only Verizon phones left in the local Best Buys here.

I bought it online and they charged me too much tax. Perhaps it is a problem just with best buy online purchases.
 
I purchases a 32 GB Gray AT&T outright and the imei websites are reporting my iPhone 5S is locked. I did in store pickup and it took them 15 minutes to figure out how to finalize the pickup since I purchased contract free. They needed my phone number so I am wondering if that causing the iPhone to be locked.

I think it unlocks once you connect it to iTunes and do a restore.

Tried that twice no luck. I guess I could pay $2 to have it unlocked. I tried doing a price match today via phone and they said they couldn't. They informed me I would need to return the iphone and repurchase it...
 
According to the dude I got my iPhone from (best buy GM) they BUY the phones from Apple so they come locked. Only Apple has unlocked phones (they said they also charge the extra 50 dollars to make profit) so I just did my unlock from a website, seems to work fine. Wish I would have known that before hand but oh well.
 
finally got one! after yesterdays dissapointment , I called bestbuy late afternoon today after preordering at midnight on launch, and unexpectably, they said they were holding mine! so i ran down and got it + $50 gift card + $50 gift card bb promotion from earlier in the year.

So I got a great deal with basically $100 bucks in gift cards that I spent on GTA 5 while there and remaining will go torwards a case i have not selected yet!

finally! best buy came thru somehow!

Glad to hear it. When they didn't have it yesterday did they say they were going to try to get one for you or did they tell you that you were out of luck?

They just said I was out of luck for that day(yesterday), but gave me no clue when, could be this week, could be in a month. since it was a preordered that was already charged, this kinda pissed me off. But they offered the $50 gift card promotion so I felt a bit calmer. But if I did not call today late afternoon, I am sure they would not have called me, maybe later in the week.

at least thats over with, and I can move on in my life,

gold is much nicer in person actually, glad I got it

just looking for a case, do all 5 cases work with 5s? the rep said otterbox and lifeproof dont work, but how bout the other cases, isnt the flash redesigned? etc etc
 
Thanks. Might have to just start calling each day on mine. Though when I called to verify last night the person I talked to then said they were just canceling the orders so I have been taking a hands off approach hoping the guy who originally called me saying he would let me know when a phone comes in actually will call.

good luck on your searches, my thinking was, at least im in the queue for one, since it seems (especially gold) that shipping is fallen to october from the apple store, I was very pleasantly surprised that I only had to wait a day and I got giftcard to boot, I cant complain!

For reference: ATT 64GB Gold I got

I think the other colors are more prevalent right now
 
What is the $50 gift card promotion? Just for people whose order got screwed up? My order was processed smoothly but I got no gift card...

It may be a different one, but a while back I know they had a deal where you had to sign up in store and it was something like if you got an upgrade in the next 6 or 12 months and had signed up you got a $50 dollar gift card. I know they did a promotion like that a couple years ago that I took part in.

There was this and then also it appears that if they messed up your pre-order from Friday morning if they are not just cancelling your order they are giving you a $50 GC when they finally get your phone in and your purchase it.
 
Best Buy stores around here got more 5s models in yesterday. I just kept an eye on the stock locator until the model I wanted popped up as available at one of the stores, and immediately called them. They were nice enough to hold one for me until I got there. (The store nearest me told me they couldn't hold anything, but they didn't get the one I wanted anyway.)

It took quite awhile for the sales associate to process my account, but it otherwise went very smoothly. I got $225 for trading in my perfect condition 4s, and had a $10 reward zone coupon ready. Walked out with a 32gb silver 5s, new case, and screen protector for $150 out-of-pocket.
