My take on this is as follows.
U2 might be present because of:
Jimmy Iovine is a long time producer of U2
Jimmy is a founder of Beats.
U2 might be part of a music relate announcement (subscription?) and because of their past history with Apple and Iovine and their celebrity status Apple might want to capitalize on it.
U2 might have their songs of the new album preloaded on the new iPhone, but who cares. If you don't like it delete it.

Also, I think the U2 thing is just part of a huge presentation, I don't even expect them to play tomorrow. There is way more on the pipeline IMO for them to build a huge white box at De Anza.

I am surprised at the complaining. Seems like a pretty damn awesome tribute to Steve; the whole thing. A huge venue that hasn't been presented at by them in 30 years, and a band that were great friends of his, possibly bundled with Product Red - which does great things. I can tell the 12 year old minds that want to bash but the symbolism is really quite sweet if you think about it. Hope they knock it out of the park tomorrow.

Agreed!

Insults are what people hurl, when they're being ignorant. Without God, you couldn't even think OR exist, unless you're gonna tell me you're Grandfather (or other ancestor) was an ape, or a fish?

Anyway, back to the topic - I've no time to debate the lunacy of Darwinian evolution tonight, sorry.

Sorry, I don't believe in ghosts. I didn't hurl insults. I spoke the truth.

I completely apologize for the rant, I quite facebook because I couldn't handle arguing with people, think it was pent up haha. I mean no disrespect to anyones belief system.

I wish I'd never joined that awful thing - now I am attached to friends and family by it... ugh.

This is way too much. I really didn't think I had that much to drink tonight.

I tell you the truth. Apple chose U2 at the last minute only because of Bieber's legal problems in Canada..,

Gimmicks instead of innovation - the Tim Cook way!!!

Could you please innovate your way into learning basic grammar, and not using excessive exclamation marks? Thanks. :)

[EDIT]

You won't be watching the event then, I take it? Thus I ask... why are you commenting at all?

U2 might be present because of:
Jimmy Iovine is a long time producer of U2

U2 has had many "long time" producers (Lillywhite, Eno, Flood), Iovine not being one of them. They used him once, for RaH. Then never used him again.

It is interesting that apple apparently didn't want to invest $120m in U2's 100 leg world tour that saw them make over $1b. Black berry stepped up instead. Now U2 are back with apple again...

Jimmy Iodine...

My assumption is that the normal headphone input jack is going away and there will be some new "hi-fi" input that is in conjunction with Beats acquisition and U2 will be there to help perform and push branding.

Essentially all of our old ear buds and accessories will be obsolete so they can upsell all new accessories under the guise of improved tech (hello lighting).

Sure. Three months from now people will chose Samsung over iPhone because of a U2 performance.

For one, people surely aren't going to buy Apple due to U2. Second, Apple bought Beats mainly for their customers. They didn't buy them for their crappy headphones or Beats Music. They bought their customers, who are mainly young, which a MO of Apple. Grab them when they are young and keep them hooked in the ecosystem. How is a Dad Rock band going to gain them any young customers?

Journalists at the event are mainly going to be kids of the 70s and 80s. The event is for THEM. And U2 are a "safe" choice; Miley Cirus is popular with the generation your talking about, should Apple invite her?
For young punks there's going to be an assload of ads on TV.

I wanna run, I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls that hold me inside
I wanna reach out and touch the flame
Where the streets have no name:D
