Now that the iphone 6 is revealed, do we know if the RAM is 1GB or not?

I do not understand why apple doubles the mid-range iphone from 32GB to 64GB but refuses to add 1 more GB to RAM. Is it that expensive or what?

I am not a pc expert, but I believe RAM allows for more breathing room making apps and OS run smoother, faster, and less stress on the CPU. Not sure if that means more battery life or not though.

That really is the question, does the iphone 6 really have only 1gb.

I wish it had zero RAM and just seamlessly processed through the cloud utilizing all the android users' extra RAM

I don't see what the big deal is. My iPhone 5c with only 1 gig of RAM has no problem with 50+ backgrounded apps. That's over 50. No noticeable hit in performance. Don't get caught up in the spec wars like Android users do.

You have zero apps in the background. You might have a few background tasks running, but that's it.

----------

This is another reason why :apple: only uses low amounts of memory. It forces devs to programm intelligently.

Otherwise older devices wouln't run new apps anymore.

Bullsh*cough*!

----------

I don't think it is what engineers are happy with, but management.

Exactly. You can ask every engineer at Apple if they would rather have 1 gig or 4 gigs of RAM, and I'm pretty sure that 100 % of them would say 4 GB.

----------

I don't know of any phone that has wireless charging straight out of the box.

I, on the other hand do know. Several of them.

Can people stop spreading this myth that less ram gives you more battery life. Less ram means more paging to storage which is a much more expensive operation than caching to ram. It also means apps need to reload more often which also uses more energy. Ram uses very little power at all.

All you apologists need to get with the fact that in 2014 and on a premium smartphone, 1GB of RAM is disgraceful. Whether you think it 'needs' it or not, would you not rather have it??
We've had 1GB of RAM for the past two years, and now it seems that we'll be having it for another two years. Blimey. We get a faster processor, a bigger screen and still the paltry 1GB RAM bottleneck exists. This is a problem right now and has been a problem for two whole years, so what exactly is cutting edge about the iPhone 6? It's an ugly 5S with a bigger screen. Period. The 'big new feature' is the screen size and don't get me wrong, a bigger screen was essential but so too was more RAM. Nobody can give a decent explanation as to why Apple haven't increased it. The only reason can be profit. They save themselves a couple of dollars per phone, and add that up over the millions of units they sell and yep, Apple customers are getting ripped off. You get 16GB of non-upgradable storage space and a stingy 1GB of RAM and yet Apple charge more than any other company for this smartphone. It has specs behind the times and a bezel-heavy design that's behind the times.

Sure the o/s is nice but is that really enough to keep people buying their phones? They have released nothing special since the iPhone 4 but at least the 5S looked a million dollars. This new model looks ugly and is no better than the 5S really, save for the bigger screen. It makes me mad when people apologise for Apple's business decisions and defend them to the death. This is an even more lacklustre release than the 5/5S was. Apple desperately needed to get with the times with this iPhone 6 and they've released a techno dinosaur. Yes you can still read your emails, Google train times and synch with your Mac, but we could do all this years ago. Aside from the screen size, the two glaring faults for me have been app/safari reloads and battery life. Neither of these problems have been addressed! Oh yeah we may get an extra hour of battery life, big deal. Oh and please don't say that iOS8 will sort the reloading issue, it has been around since I started with iPhones a few years ago and no new release of iOS has cured it. In fact the problem has only got worse and I'm convinced that it's due to Apple putting insufficient RAM in their phones. The phones get more powerful, the apps get more powerful and the RAM *is* insufficient.

Queue the apologists saying that Apple don't play the spec wars, that iOS doesn't need much RAM, that they have never experienced the reloading issue, and that I need to clear off to Android...
I don't want to leave Apple but they've forced my hand. I have to. Their product doesn't work properly for me.

That you can save a little bit of battery is obviously an excuse.

Actually ... I don't think it really makes any difference to battery life. The amount of power used by the RAM pales in comparison to the CPU and screen, so the battery drain while actively using your phone will not be noticeable.

Where it does save is in stand-by as the CPU and screen shut down, but the RAM needs to be powered to avoid losing data. With an iPad or a laptop, that may be important. For a phone that has 10+ days of stand-by and generally gets fully drained every day, it seems to be a non-issue.

Is there any indication that iPhone Plus has 2GB?

No ... and I would put the odds at 100:1 that the 6 and 6+ will have the same RAM.

I do not think that iOS pages to storage.

I would be surprised, too. That would mean each iPhone model has the same RAM from the 6 plus down to the 5C?

However, Apple did already differentiate on other aspects between the two. I am naive on this subject, but how will the two models have equal performance with the full HD resolution on the Plus.

Also, landscape mode on Plus seems to lay groundwork for split screen apps if that gets released.

The 6 Plus will have worse performance if the internals are the same (There's already a thread here about just that).

Loved the rant, one of your best. So you get mad when people disagree with your opinion? Alrighty then.

As I said, when I comes to phones I look at form and function. I don't need android specs, which don't seem to really propel android phones in front if the benchmark crowd.

I like working and useable, which I guess are fluid definitions based on the consumer.

We have an iPad2, 2 iPad minis (all 512mb RAM) and an iPad (256mb) at home.
They do everything just fine.

I still think :apple: should just put 4gb in the 6+ already to make the people who need that happy. :)

I have an iPhone 5 and an iPad Air. Safari on both is an embarrassment. 2014, and you can't even toggle on another tab without having to refresh every time. Do people really think that is acceptable?

Can you answer this question:
Why does MS Office require at least 2gb RAM?

Because it includes the RAM required for the OS. And because it is a huuuuge piece of software with 98000 features, of which you'll use maybe four at any given time...

It wasn't meant to be ranty, but I am annoyed with Apple. I really wanted the iPhone 6 to be great :-(

I hear you.

Between you and me I just don't understand why ram wasn't bumped at least .5 gig. Makes no sense. Unless of course when the inevitable tear down happens, the i6 does really have more than 1 gig.

It needs more ram, 1GB isn't enough. It certainly runs smooth enough but it's not enough for Safari, tabs constantly reload. They are just being cheap, just like they continue to do 16GB as a base model.
