Perhaps something like the following:

"Regarding recent reports from an unspecified number of users who have experienced the failure of the structural integrity of their iPhone 6 Plus, we have begun an internal investigation into the reasons for this. Our engineers recommend in the meantime to store your device in a place where the phone will not experience high amounts of stress applied to a localised point."

In short, they are saying that WTF did you expect?
What would they say? Free replacement program if you bend your iPhone in your pocket? :)

The problem is that bending a phone could damage the structural integrity of the battery. A battery which is damaged, becomes pierced or otherwise disfigured can lead to serious problems, as it could lead to combustion of the battery or a dangerous chemical leak.

No more serious than people sitting on their car hoods and expecting them not to bend or dent. Seriously, would you put a banana in your pocket and do all that and then expect it not to be deformed?

Anytime you put an object in a small space (relative to the object's size) and then move that space around or bend in an unusual (for the object) way, then there is always a chance of an accident.

This is no different than putting a credit card (which is flexible) in a wallet, then getting pissed when it's bent in a curve after a month.

I have no sympathy.

A credit card is actually designed to be quite flexible, unlike the delicate interiors of a phone. A battery contains chemicals which are poisonous to humans, and therefore a structure which contains such chemicals should be contained in such a way as not be damaged easily. Anyone who designs a phone and doesn't anticipate that people will carry it in their pockets is simply, well stupid.

When is Tim Cook going to realize that Jony Ive is not making the best design decisions, surely in the last few years Mr Ive has been working at Apple this would have been noticed, then again look at the stupid decisions of 1 sided ipad audio and hard soldered mac laptops...My 10 year old cellphone works as well as, if not better than an iphone and I do not need to charge it every 30 minutes!!

It's not impossible. My coworker even bent his iPhone 4. Perhaps that was due to being run over by a tractor, though. It still works fine, by the way.

I'd be willing to wager that these phones were "sat on", with the phones being in people's back pocket wedged between a human posterior and a hard chair. My best guess for an average adult human; the minimum weight is 100+ pounds.

Would you want to put 100-300 lbs of pressure on your $700-$1000 toy?

Use your brains people.

Oh for god sake not this again. Let's see what other gates the internet can manufacture to generate page views.

"Designed by Apple", "made in China" .#######

If you think that their choice of production in China has anything to do with it, sure, tell us how Chinese aluminum products have vastly different physical properties as opposed to US-made ones, built after the same design.

I like that the article actually states some suggestions how to avoid this risk of bending! Other sites missed that out completely!

I think with more and more thinness on this phones you have to make some compromises eventually. As a costumer I should be aware of this risk when buying such a thin device. When I'm aware that my phone could bend under a longer period of pressure, I simply try to avoid that and take my phone out of my pocket if necessary. If I don't wanna to that, I would use a solid case.

I sit on my iPhone 5S all the time!! Ok, ok, I know that didn't come out sounding well. Aside from that, its kinda surprising to think that Apple didn't anticipate this and build a phone that could handle it. If my iPhone 6 Plus bends after sitting on it, I'll be pretty disappointed. :(

Maybe Apple should install a fart app which makes a farting noise whenever you sit on the phone. After a while, you'll stop doing it.

Me thinks Apple produces a shorter iPhone Plus next time around that is wider. Helps with the whole lever principle. To be called: iPhone 6 Chubby

Step 1: Learn to weld Aluminum.
Step 2: Apply linear gussets. (Could double as cooling fins too!):)
Step 3: Profit?

Case makers golden opportunity to design cases with "stringers" or "gussets" for strength.

To the lab!

Poor design

Sorry guys, but putting a phone in your pocket is a reasonable use-case. If it subsequently bends, the solution is not to buy a case, put it in a splint or pad it in foam - it is to make it stronger

Its meant to look like that

So people who do not realize a long bendable object cannot be placed over a thigh with pressure will now demand an exchange, further impacting supply and raising costs for all. Thanks!

Ive needs to back off on his thinness obsession and get some common sense and bigger batteries.

And the more it defeats the purpose of making the phone thin :(

iPhones are tools to be used, not works of art to be placed on display.

If people are going to place large, thin, fragile electronics in tight pockets, or places where the device encounters movement / contact stress, they shouldn't be surprised that said device starts to show signs of stress by bending etc.

I know a lot of people like to show off their iphone naked, but it is getting to the point, where doing that could come at a high cost.

In other news:

~ If you sit on a wooden bench, it bends a little or a lot, according to your weight.

~ If you press hard enough onto a cookie, it will snap.

~ If you drop a tomatoe, it will splat.

Using: Good

Breaking: Bad

Macrumors bot: I think you need a source code re-write, as you're parsing elementary rules of physics as "news".

Must be quiet, now all the pre-iPhone 6 "news" has passed (parsed).

Me too, one less person I have to fight with to get my iPhone 6 Plus. You enjoy that meager .7" upgrade to the 5s. I'll take a real man's phone, with a larger display and frame and Optical Image Stabilization that bends and will break

fixed that for you
