And the $899 Air ships with an i5 while the $799 Surface ships with an i3. Then you add $129 for the keyboard (sold separately) and now the Air is $899 and the Surface is $928...
So...

Its alittle misleading as the surface with a 12" inch screen sits between the mba 11" and 13". I think the mba 13 is $1099 and the comp sp3 is $999 + $130 or $1130. The mba 11 and 13 average out to $1000. So pretty comparable--imo. Given the screen, the digitizer and the design--i would say its a good value.

I am not a fan of the key cover nor would I ever buy this is I planned to type on my lap. But if you love oneNote and need a pen--its pretty awesome.

Can I use the keyboard on my lap?

...Oh. Well, come back when you've mastered that feature and we'll talk.

And if you could bring your high-end prices down to within a hundred bucks of an equivalent Air, that would be a big plus as well.

Use the SP3 on my lap daily without issue. Hmm... Same processor as MBA, double the ram and right in between the 11 and 13 inch... Same price or $200 less respectively. With respect.

----------

I would love to see the MacBook Air go away and have the 12" take its place. It's a full power Laptop when it is docked and an iOS tablet when it is undocked.
I guess the change in user experience on the same device might throw people. I'm sure Apple will find a way to make that experience elegant and seamless.

With Windows 10 and dock mode this is already a reality. Can't wait to see what Apple's answer will be. Should be pretty cool.

I think the biggest problem is that most people don't seem to realize how ridiculously good this current generation of processors are.

I think its netbook backlash. And gaming distorts the perception as well.

The "good enough" standard--for most--was obtained when robust video playback emerged in the mid price laptop market in 2001-03. By 2006 and the release of the intel mbp's--the golden age had arrived.

Also, imo "pricey" ultrabooks are an amazing deal. If you keep a mid range sp3 for 3 years its about $400 a year...just a bit more than a dollar a day. Pretty amazing.

Depends on what you need the kickstand to do. You're right that as a replacement for a traditional laptop hinge, it's not comparable. But quite honestly, at least in my use I can probably count the number of times I've needed to use my laptop on my actual lap on both hands (maybe just one). You have to remember that the stand also serves a purpose when the unit is in tablet mode too. It's actually quite a useful feature.

Yes, the anecdotal evidence from your "friend" seems legit.

Yeah, I must have imagined doing some 3d work in zBrush and Maya just the other day. Oh, and the entire Adobe suite too.

I must be dreaming too. I could swear that I am typing this on a touch keyboard while laying on my bed watching a movie (on a TV) and working on a Revit (3D) building model. I hate it when my SP3 does that!;)

The evidence is showing you are the one making false claims.

You are funny. Everything I mentioned was taken off of MS website. Stop trolling man it's not cute lol. The Surface Pro 3 is a tablet with expensive accessories. The apps in the commercial are an added expense. MS comparing the their Tablet to a Computer ugh not impressed when its the low end of the MacBooks.

To be fair, the Apple stores wouldn't be nearly as busy if there wasn't a Genius Bar in the store. Typically when visiting over half of the folks in the store are there for repairs. Microsoft store in Northpark Center in Dallas was pretty busy over the weekend.

I think the MS sub stores in box retailers have been pretty well done--but lets give Apple credit. They turned the tech store into an art form and premium retail destination. I dont know if Jobs thought this up but he certainly backed it up.

I personally see the apple watch transforming the pristine simplicity of the Apple store into another hack retail experience. And just wait till they start discounting the stuff they cant sell---what a mess

They don't mention its cost $900 and that the keyboard ($130), the mouse ($50) and stylus ($50) is extra.

The sp stylus is included with no extra cost. I do think some advertising imagery suggests the keyboard is included. I dont know any laptop that ships with a mouse--so thats a stetch. 2 pinocchios?

. The Keyboard and mouse push the Surface Pro over $1500 mark. For that price you can just pick up a thin PC or Macbook Pro 13in.

The surface is a nice netbook, unfortunately it's still running windows. Apple is never about hardware or software, but both working simultaneously in a perfect relationship. Microsoft will never be able to get their products to that level unless they start from scratch.

Have you seen Windows 8?
They brought a tablet OS to the desktop.

Because it is already close to perfection as it comes.

You can just use the desktop, I ignore metro Windows 8 aside from desktop program links because it feels pointless and slow.

Christmas eve Apple versus the rest

… an honest to goodness Mac vs PC thread! …

Why in hell would they want to go back on Windows?

For some customers, reasons include loss of confidence in the ability and/or desire of Apple to produce the best. Declining iOS and OS X Quality Imperil Apple's Future Growth And Retention and thereabouts.

I went out and bought a $130 8" Atom-powered Windows 8 tablet from MicroCenter because, why not? It's so cheap! … basic media consumption. …

Nice hint – thanks. It's good to know that the hardware can be so inexpensive.

… If I ever got so disillusioned with Apple that I was going to go away from OS X/Macs, I'd go to Unix/Linux rather than go back to Windows.

I began preparing a few months ago. For me, PC-BSD is a very smart idea …

… It's a nice product, but Windows is still Windows...

There is one niché that it serves... digital art. …

That's not the only niche.

When I last checked, for work colleagues, some things that were possible with Microsoft Excel for Windows were impossible with Excel for OS X.

And so on … don't expect all niches to be well-known.

… Only reason we use Windows at work is for the Accounting software …

In my work environment there are various reasons for preferring Microsoft to Apple for managed computers. Those reasons do include a lack of awareness, in some areas, of how Apple computers can be managed, but the prevalence of Microsoft is a major factor.

… enjoyed running … without bootcamp/parallels …

I can understand that. I occasoinally use CrossOver, but (a) using apps for Windows with OS X without Windows does not feel as natural as (b) using apps for Windows with Windows without OS X.

… Windows more than I use my Mac because my employer only supports Windows machines at the moment. …

Understood.

… you can't actually use it comfortably on …

I don't know when it began, but Apple apparently avoids use of the word 'laptop'. Instead we have Apple notebooks.

http://www.apple.com/uk/mac/compare/notebooks.html and
http://www.apple.com/business/mac/ for example.

Compare the latter with localised https://www.apple.com/id/business/mac/, which still uses the word 'laptop'.

Microsoft has some of the best Handwriting and eink patents around. But where do those fit into actual Office products? They don't. …

They probably do fit; I see Microsoft handwriting recognition used with Microsoft Office. The fit is not limited to integral touch screen technology.

Think SMART Board®, and so on.

Most notably in my case, when I used the SP3 I found myself creating content as I intended, but when I was on the rMBP I was merely consuming it. …

Interesting. Which version of OS X was on the Apple notebook?

… all the casual tech users who watch this commercial around me are absolutely certain the Surface Pro 3 is around $299 to $499 like a Chromebook. …

Do most of those people also use a Chromebook?

OSX Yosemite is great on usability …

Are all the displays that you use with Yosemite Retina quality?

Apple should make a Mac tablet.

Do you mean, Mac hardware, with an Apple OS that's designed primarily for use without an integral physical keyboard?

… I always have my HDMI cable and that clunky VGA-thunderbolt thing and sometimes even my own Apple TV with me when I'm working off-site, but I don't want to!

Thunderbolt-to-VGA with Thunderbolt on the Mac side of the adapter, yes?

Why would anyone buy the Mac when you could buy a Windows machine for less?

Amongst the factors: familiarity with Apple hardware and software, with third party software for Mac.

Also: Compare Surface Pro 3, MacBook Air, ipad

… OS X Yosemite is perfection. …

Yes, it's beautiful; yes, it looks terrible.

I do like how they've tried to make Yosemite look as ugly as possible, by enabling the high contrast dock, using the old Mavericks wallpaper etc.

If I wanted a photograph of Yosemite looking relatively ugly on a Mac: I'd allow Apple's defaults, open a few apps (including third party ones that have not been given the Yosemite treatment) and last but not least: pull down a menu.

… With Apple's seamless software & hardware integration it just feels more natural, it blends in and you totally forget the technology behind it. It's a very subjective/subtile experience.

I know what you mean about subtle. Since the development of OS X Yosemite was so far from subtle, I no longer have confidence that Apple can provide a seamless experience, long term.

… I wish Apple would reinvent their laptop lineup. It's stale and feels way less exciting than iOS. …

Phrases such as 'stale' and 'less exciting' worry me … more now than they did a few months ago. Partly because a few months ago, some people used phrases such as 'old fashioned' to describe what was then the most recent release of the operating system. Moreover the phrases worry me because in Yosemite there's an excess of visual change for the sake of change.

(ctrlshft, please don't take that personally. It's a reflection on posts from a variety of sources over the past five months or so.)

… Apple has to do something.. they cannot just continue to troll out same looking laptop over and over and over and over again..

Again, I still prefer apple laptop but I hope they do something awesome. …

We'll probably get, first, an impressive combination of software and services.

Changes to hardware are less likely to be impressive. Notebooks look notebook-like because that's essentially a good design.

I walked by a Ferrari dealership and saw no customers.

The customers drove there online. Ferrari mice in designer sunglasses :)

There's no such thing as an iPhone OS you dolt.

I'm old enough to remember iPhone OS and my iPhone should be old modern enough to run it.

I'm also old enough to care very little about whether my cheap sunglasses make me look like a dolt :)

If I could run OS X on one of these …

… I'd still love a real Apple over any hackintosh …

You can, people have loaded OS X on their SP3s.

Also there are a few OSx86-related posts in topics such as OS X Yosemite Beta on Unsupported Macs; https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=20521325#post20521325 seeks clarity on what types of discussion are allowed …

Put out a version with OS X on it, and I'm there :D

… It’s a shame you can’t officially run OSX on it …

Surface Pro3 would probably be an outstanding bit of kit...if it had OS X

So you want a touchscreen device with an OS not meant for touch?

OS X Yosemite is probably closer to touchscreen readiness than any other OS for Mac hardware.

… Microsoft has gone a bit batty,, there's nothing wrong with that …

There's unhappiness about Apple going a bit off the rails with software.

I think the title of this post is a bit misleading. … It's like a how-to-adjust guide for people moving from an apple environment to a windows environment.

I really don't like negative advertising … guarantees I won't purchase a product … I think it's toxic. I mean, advertising is pretty bad in general, but a product should be advertised on its own merits alone.

Whilst I'm not a fan of negative advertising, I do appreciate the humour in the video for the Microsoft product. Apple is big enough, mature enough and stupid enough to take a joke.

I'm not amused by Apple advertising Yosemite as 'Completely new. Completely Mac.' – it's neither of those things.

I don't know how effective these "switch" campaigns are. …

Is it a campaign? Or just a set of resources that are avaialble for people who consider switching?

How many of the Apple haters here own a Surface?

It's possible/likely that most criticism of Apple products, here, is from people who do not hate Apple. Related:

Smart. 2009 17" MacBookPro5,2 here. Solid state hybrid drive in lieu of the hard disk drive. Something like that? (We're keeping it, reusing it. I'm just curious about your preference for older hardware.)

I've been using PhotoShop on my SP3 since buying it three weeks ago with no problems. I have the i5 4GB model. Runs perfectly without running out of memory.

My 2012 Mac Mini with 4GB on the other hand now runs incredibly slow in comparison to my SP3 now.

You mean to tell us your three year old computer runs slower than the Surface you purchased three weeks ago?

Yes, Windows computers run great the first few weeks you own them.

I have a Surface Pro 3 and it's an amazing device. As much as I actually like Microsoft now...the Surface Pro 3 seems like a device Apple would have made. I used Apple Computers since the G4 Cube. And there is no denying they make a quality product...and that's what the Surface Pro 3 is.

It doesn't. He's including the cost of a replacement stylus and a mouse to inflate the price and bolster his point.

Though overzealous fan that he is, I do agree with him about the Type Cover. MS is marketing the hell out the thing. Every Surface commercial shows it being used in some shape, form, or fashion, the Surface Pro displays you see in the stores always have one attached to it, and they're even building a few big Windows 10 features around the thing.

...so why the hell is it sold separately?

Which new Windows?

… would be very interested in your opinion about the new windows and the Surface Pro. I still have to work with Windows on regular basis and I recently had a SP3 in my hands and I find both borderline unusable, especially comparing to Yosemite. Sure, Windows 8.1 is responsive and has more contrast, but the organisation of the information is beyond awful and the whole UI is incredibly dysfunctional (IMO of course).

By "new" do you mean Windows 8.1 (2013) or prerelease Windows 10?

Lots of ppl in here have never even held a SP3 based on many of these responses. Hate MS all you want the SP3 is a really good device. Tad bit overpriced but so is every Apple product.

Definitely the type cover marketing seems weird. Maybe they found that a lot of people already have wireless keyboards and they can get at least get started without spending that extra money.
