well unless apple fits something like the fat-pod (with video) between the iPod-nano and the iPod-touch they definetly will not outprice people by charging 549 for any model. its just not apple to run the average customer out

exactly the words i was looking for. Apple doesn't want to shut anyone out.

i asked Don Bagles if there would be a Touch model for under $350 and he said "No." But, he could just be lying to get attention. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

On another note, I bought my 5G iPod back in November of 2005 with a three year warranty from Circuit City. My Macbook doesn't recognize that it's plugged in half the time and it's very laggy. I know the plug-in problem has to do with the iPod, because my Macbook recognizes my Nano every time. I was just wondering if Circuit City would give me store credit for this since its covered under their warranty. Or am I going to have to use some scissors to get the credit (if you know what I mean)?

actually i was wrong in my other post, but to correct myself, apple's protection plan extends the manufacturer warranty to 2 years while bestbuy extends it to 3 years. and right now they are both priced at 59.99

that def seems worth it. im hoping bestbuy will have it right away so i can get it there. lets hope i have some money left over to get it.

this might sound dumb but can you purchase an extended warranty at store where you didnt buy the product?

Agreed. That's running into territory that other companies might enjoy more. ;) I think it would be a major mistake to release an ipod above the $350 range.

i really dont think they are going to put out an ipod with a touchscreen and wifi for 349. i would love it if that was case but i highly doubt that

This is where I'm pretty sure a revamp of the existing range (new interface but no touch/wifi/etc) would fit in. It'd be just fine for the budget-to-mainstream crowd. The "touch" would be at a premium (like one not seen since the photo!)

I doubt the camera thing. Wifi is definitely relevant, although I'm not sure about Safari/email, I do now think those would be "hack-ons" rather than official features as they're treading on the iPhone's "communications device" soil. But for playing multimedia, wifi is relevant.

Camera though? That's always been in the mobile phone domain. The thought of taking pictures with an iPod seems somewhat ridiculous :p Though I'm sure there'd be an addon camera from a third party.

Well, I can't wait to see what Jobs pulls out of his hat. It could be similar to the Harry Potter book... one crowd says "it will happen", the other crowd says "it won't happen" and JKR comes out with a completely unexpected "Option C" and everyone goes "wtf?" :D

Folks,

Despite all your wishes for fancy features, I think the 6G iPod video will end up being this:

1) It will have a case that looks like a cross between the current 5.5G iPod video case and the iPhone case, possibly with multicolored metallic case backs.

2) The display is a full-screen display with touchscreen controls, user selectable for either iPhone style or emulated Click Wheel style. The interface will be based on a patent Apple filed in 2006 for such devices.

3) It will offer coverflow and other iPhone-style navigation features.

4) Hard drive storage available now is 80 and 120 GB, with 160 GB available in early 2008. There will be a 1 GB NAND flash memory buffer.

5) There will be NO Wi-Fi connectivity. However, Bluetooth connectivity will be available for things like wireless headphones and wireless data transmission to appropriately-equipped car stereos. The short-range Bluetooth with special encryption is how you can use the 6G iPod video to buy music from specially equipped kiosks.

6) It will use the standard iPod data connector and a normal 3.5 mm headphone connector, NOT the recessed headphone connector found on the iPhone.

7) Apple will offer an optional clip-on device through the data connector to receive digital radio broadcasts.

8) Cost of new iPods are:

80 GB--US$349
120 GB--US$399
160 GB--US$449 (when available in early 2008)

Alright, I have to respond to this one, SactoGuy:

2) The display is a full-screen display with touchscreen controls, user selectable for either iPhone style or emulated Click Wheel style.)

You were right that it is a full-screen display with touchscreen controls, but there is ABSOLUTELY no way that the new iPod will feature an emulated Click Wheel style. Why? Here's why:

1) There is no use for having a "virtual" click wheel. Why not just have real click wheel instead? The use for having a virtual click wheel is ZERO. People care about navigation, and just because you have a bigger screen doesn't mean people will like the UI.

2) I know many people will argue with me, and you can agree or disagree, but the Click Wheel interface is DEAD (at least for flagship models, anyway.) People aren't going to want a simple user interface. If you're going to have a bigger screen and more features, you need a better UI than a click wheel. A click wheel just doesn't cut it.

3) Design. A fundemental part of Apple's company philosophy. Let me ask you a question. Do you think it would be aesthetically pleasing to have a big fat wheel coming up on such a beautiful screen? I mean, having a real click wheel is a different story, but a virtual click wheel? Come on people, Apple is better than that!!

So I think we can all agree that an emulated click wheel for the new iPod is out of the question. Just my 2 cents.

If true, I'm not buying an iPod, as much as I want one. I'll buy some other brand. Give me something in the neighborhood of 30GB for $250 and I'm still in, even if it's not touchscreen. You better add something tho (wifi would be awsomeness without touch)

<shrug> I can't wait, but done speculating.

if its not touchscreen and the same size hd why do you want a new ipod?

As I've been reading through, I've noticed something a lot of people have been saying: "The touchscreen iPod is going to be expensive." Expensive? What? Let's step back for a moment and look at this.

First off, why has Apple been so successful in selling the iPod? Design, technology, ease of use, and so on and so forth. But there is one thing that has made Apple extremely successful. That is pricing. Have we all forgotten the way of Apple?

If you look at past iPod models, they haven't been expensive at all (with the exception of the iPod photo, at least.) As someone posted on this thread before, pricing is what makes Apple undercut the competition. This is indeed true. Consumers aren't going to buy a product that is garbage, but they're not going to buy an expensive toy, either. Apple doesn't risk quality or price.

Next is the argument of Wi-Fi making the price go up. Although Wi-Fi may increase price some, it's not going to make a very substansial impact. But if there's one thing that makes me mad, it's the fact that people think the new iPod will cut into iPhone sales if it's has multi-touch and Wi-Fi. Apple doesn't need to price the new iPod high just so it won't "cut into sales." They also know that people won't buy their 'Pods if they're priced too high. PHONE SALES AND MEDIA SALES ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS, PEOPLE. Unless you are a complete idiot, you aren't going to buy an iPhone for it's iPod features. That's dump. If people want a quality phone, they buy the iPhone. If they want a quality music player, they buy the iPod. 'Nuff said.

And at that, I think people need to step back and look at the big picture. Just becuase a product is "nice" or "technologic" doesn't mean it has to be priced higher. Look at Macs, they are better than any PC on the market, but they are priced very competitively. Apple is above all of that, folks.

So with that said, it's time to rethink iPod pricing and end wacko theories, too. We're all excited, but that doesn't mean to make garbage speculation.

Cheers.

I dont forsee these high prices for "a glorified 5g". It has a touchscreen and is widescreen, but really doesnt offer anything new. It started as a music player, then gained photo, then video.

Last night while out at the bars I was sitting with my friends and asked how many people had 5g iPods. Of those I asked how many would buy a new 6g in addition to their 5g if it had widescreen and was touch. 1 out of 6. Then I asked if it had wi-fi and a browser would you ditch your 5g. 5 of 6 raised their hands.

If there is no wifi I think Apple is reinventing the wheel which will benefit people who need a new iPod, but will not affect the people that already have a 5g iPod. Which is a lot of people. Add wifi, which wont take iphone sales, and you have a brand new product worthy of a new Generation marking.

I think that apple will make it touch screen with wifi, the zune for 229 has wifi (although it has highly restricted usability, it wouldnt cost much more to include safari and internet access.) and i have no doubt that the ipod will be touch screen, i just think the price will be 349 and no lower assuming it has touch & wifi. but i have no idea what the harddrive size will be, preferably at least 60 or 80gigs for the low end

i highly doubt it, but i really wish you could. but you can buy from a retail store and still buy a warranty from apple

wow, thats really nice. I bet that is what its going to look like, but maybe with a bigger screen and some side buttons to change tracks without looking.

yea, a bigger screen and side buttons would be nice. but i dont think apple would include side buttons

FYI, Don Beagles has moved to the Think Secret forums, and posted this info a few hours ago:

"Here are the rough specs for the new iPod:

There will be 8GB of flash aboard, to run Mac OS X, and then a 60GB or 120GB hard drive for storage.

The high end models will have a 4" widescreen touch screen, at 640x360 resolution.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Safari will be included as well in the high end models.

Expect pricing between $449 and $649."

Still seems like he is just trying to get attention.

there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that Apple will sell a friggin iPod for almost $700! Apple is not dumb, they actually WANT people to buy their products. The highestend one will be no more than $450.
