If there is WiFi I hope it is not just for iTunes and what not...

I want to use the WiFi for Safari and other web related activities!!!!

i do too, but I think that Apple will just stick with a iPod that strictly plays music/videos. They want you to buy the iPhone for that.

Smaller = Cheaper

"cheaper"? flash drive is expensive as it is - who could afford multiple drives?

Aren't the smaller drives cheaper than the larger drives proportionally? That is you pay less per GB on smaller flash drives than you do on the larger ones. So if you use multiple small ones in one ipod it could be cheaper, but its a stupid idea anyway I don't see apple doing that.

The issue of the NAND memory is the only thing that gives me huuuge doubt over the credibility of that article - otherwise it's highly believable. I suppose it's possible they were misquoted and the memory is just for the Nano (as before).

You just don't get 120GB flash yet, not without it being very big (physically) and *very* expensive. For example I just looked at solid state drives on Scan's site and the biggest is 64GB at £568 (around $1000). That's for a full size SATA drive.

Apple are extremely innovative, but I've yet to see them perform miracles :D

Still, it's not 100% predictable. I found this article from February speculating on the same issue:

If the new ipod simply has a new interface or stores more music, why would the average user want to replace their current ipod? After all, why replace one music player for another that is the same physical size? Just for coverflow? And the vast number of ipod users don't even fill 30gb of music. So a bigger hard drive isn't a real draw.

Doesn't Apple realize that the new ipod MUST offer some new functionality if they want people to replace their current music players...
Wifi has to be part of the new iPod.

Digital Radio iPod? I hope not.....

Radio iPods expected on Wednesday

New iPods designed to support digital radio
Iain Thomson, vnunet.com 03 Sep 2007

Apple is expected to launch a new range of iPods this week designed to receive digital radio.

The company will make an announcement about the new products on 5 September, but is remaining quiet about what changes will be made.

However, a reliable industry insider has told vnunet.com that the announcement will include plans to bring digital radio to the iPod along with an option to buy music using the device.

The source said that the new iPods will be able to receive digital radio, and will include a 'buy-now' function to allow the user to download and buy tracks as they are being played.

This facility will be limited to tracks sold from the iTunes store, but Apple hopes to dramatically increase the number of tracks available via the service. It is not known whether the same functions will be included in the iPhone.

Other rumours about the new iPod line suggest the inclusion of a full touch-screen that does away with hardware buttons, and a new version of the iPod Nano that can handle video.

Meanwhile jewellery designer Thomas Heyerdahl has confirmed that he is selling the world's most expensive iPod, a Shuffle worn as a necklace coated in white and pink gold and covered with 430 diamonds. It will sell for just under £21,000.

The more I think about it, the more I'm also inclined to believe that any new touch-screen iPod will just be ... an iPod. Having the touch screen and new user interface for the iPod, its calendar and contacts would still be a very, very desirable upgrade to the 5.5 iPod or a Nano.

that looks good, and very possible.

Right so I'll post yet again :D

Based on the various images and rumours posted, on which sites they're quoted, their reliability, Apple Legal's reactions and some degree of logic, my predictions are:

* The new Nano, pictured above, is real (sorry, fans of the old one). Not touchscreen or Wifi, but with the new OS X style interface and video capability. Same price as existing models, with a possible storage size bump if they can afford to do so. {Based on the "leaked" image and the video that was shown a while back of a new interface operated by a clickwheel. Both ordered by Apple to be taken down.}

* The mainstream iPod will undergo the same treatment as the Nano i.e. no touchscreen or wifi, but new OS X interface, similar form factor to before (but aluminium and glass of course), drop the 30GB so it's just the 80GB model but with the price dropped to between the two (£200 aka $300). {Based on logic... they need an affordable equivalent to the existing iPod and the Nano is too small for lots of people}

* Shuffle - same old, but slight storage increase and introduction of red model {Various sources, seems believable}

Steve says "What's wrong, what you looking so disappointed for? OK, one more thing..."

* All new iPod Touch (or some clever name) which will indeed have what everyone wants - multitouch, huge storage, wifi, the works. Albeit at a substantial price. One size - 120GB. {There are enough rumours and takedowns that it's got to be true... and I'm sure Apple know what fans are hoping for. I'm sure they know a letdown would *not* be good.}

I wish you were right. The real question is what does Wifi mean on this version.
Simply a portal to buy more music on iTunes (crippled wifi) or full wifi for Safari/email?

Apple has had a lot of letdowns lately at various keynotes (except for the iPhone). Apple has ended up looking pretty sloppy lately, and iPhone really decimated a lot of Apple R&D sucking up a lot of resources which could have gone towards Leopard, iMacs, laptops, and yes.. the ipod.

Apple is distracted and sloppy..... Does anyone remember a time when SO MANY leaks, videos, still photos, and rumors came out which ended up being true? I really think Apple has overextended itself.

Well, I don't think they'll be disappointing people with their flagship product (the iPod), whatever may be happening with the Mac. i.e. we'll see full wifi with Safari/email.

Now you mention it, the new "mainstream" iPod I was speculating about may be a candidate for crippled wifi though (rather than none at all). It'd be something extra compared to the existing model, other than the prettier interface, whilst still giving people an incentive to get the high end touch one.

And as much as I would like to see WiFi on a regular iPod be used for more than just iTS purchases, I think you are correct in that they would keep that function on the iPhone.

I think the wifi will be for playing music and video over let's say your your home A/V system via an airport express or Apple tv. If in fact the new High end I pod does have safari ( and I hope it does) they could very easily make it subscription based. Remember Apple does have that relationship with AT&T. $19.95 a month limited and $29.95 unlimited access. Also remember last year when Apple bought that huge date center? What ever became of that? Maybe Apple will piggyback off AT&T to sell monthly internet. AT&T keeps the wireless phone and Apple brands the data only portion. I can't imagine that Apple spent all that R & D cash on a hi end phone that only people who are willing to go with AT&T can use. Much too small of a market for that kind of outlay.

Also no 160 gig. At best 120

I'm done now.

The most realistic stance on this is:

1. Wifi will exist in some models (probably only touch models), it will be used for wireless I-Tunes and Safari, same as iPhone.

2. Flash models will exist, along with a hard drive models with big memory to cache files.

3. It could be possible that there will be some hardware buttons on the new iPod to allow pocket style usage (switch tracks, etc)

4. Apple could really, really f*ck Apple by making the touch models have bluetooth, allowing bluetooth tethering to internet. The Nokia 770/N800 does this very well.

5. Coverflow and flick/scroll is very important, and will find its way into some of these new devices.

6. As the above poster mentioned, it would be insane if they offered a data only plan for the iPod (ala sidekick). 3g anyone? (i love to dream). Probably not realistic, but damn what an idea.

just my thoughts.

it only makes sense for Apple to release the ipod with touchscreen and wifi. I mean come on, we live in a world now that is constantly connected. Information moves at the speed of light. Everyone needs everything yesterday...not when they get home to their computer. Apple make a leap forward with the iPhone, why make a leap backwards with an iPod that is not connected to the world?:apple:

I have been wondering about this as well.

For the international market including BT and basically turning the iPod into a bluetooth headset for most phones would allow you to keep your phone (because the iPhone hasn't been released internationally) and yet use your iPod yo receive calls like several 3rd party headsets for iPods allow now.

you wouldnt be able to do that bc the ipod wont have a speaker. Bluetooth on the ipod would mean people with bluetooth stereo headphones can listen wirelessly.

Umm. BT iPod pairs with BT phone. Phone receives call and iPod acts like a BT headset and pipes the call to your iPod headphones which just happen to be the same ones that come with the iPhone that have a microphone etc. A pretty simple build I would think.

Wow. Nearly 40 pages of pure speculation regarding the 6G iPod. What could be more beautiful? :)

For the sake of keeping things simple, I just want a touch screen iPod, with Cover-Flow and landscape mode and a Calendar or something. Keep the price down.

oooooohhhh ok, i get it now. I just thought you meant to talk into the iPod as a speaker. My bad.
