it says here its thinner
but on the apple website the specs say it is 12.3mm? which is thicker right?
or am i just reading something wrong?

Today's update was rad, but seemed sparse on the details [like exact measurements]

The exact measurements are on the FCC application and the Apple website.

It's thicker.

If this is true my guess is that the price cut is a veiled subsidy.

Cleaner than the way most phone subsidies work, in which the advertising looks like they are selling a used car.

How can it be thinner?

The new one (3G) is
Height: 4.5 inches (115.5 mm)
Width: 2.4 inches (62.1 mm)
Depth: 0.48 inch (12.3 mm)
Weight: 4.7 ounces (133 grams)

The old one (EDGE) is
Height: 4.5 inches (115 mm)
Width: 2.4 inches (61 mm)
Depth: 0.46 inch (11.6 mm)
Weight: 4.8 ounces (135 grams)

Wait Maybe the shape is not the same i mean 0.48 inche is the thickness at the fattest point of the phone but since the 3g is kinda"bulged" on the back...
get what i mean?

here's some stuff

From SFGate.com...

"In the United States, AT&T, the exclusive carrier, will sell the iPhone for $199 with a two-year contract. It will offer voice plans starting at $39.99 per month plus unlimited 3G Internet service for $30 a month. That's a $10 increase from the cheapest plan for the earlier iPhone."

damnn....30 bucks a month. for internet... oh well!:D

So the pricks at AT&T just raised the data prices for 3G from $20 to $30 per month, what a bummer..... I just might hang on to my version 1.0 a little longer.

I'm actually have mixed feelings about this. I can see where all the complaints are coming from and I like to take a stab at why.

Q: Why no 32gb version?
A: SSD is still too expensive. Nothing Apple could do.

Q: Why not front-side camera? And same megapixel?
A: How would you take photos w/ the iPhone unless the camera had a swivel? If that was the case, they would have to redesign the phone.

Q: Why not video-conferencing? Ghetto gps software? Copy & paste? etc.
A: Apple-store, but also certain aspects of the phone could be improved.

All these things come down to cost cost cost. Seriously, how many non-Apple fanatics would actually buy the new iPhone had it been $400-$500 w/ a 3 megapixel camera and better software?

Keep in mind that cost & appealing to the masses is their PRIMARY goal. With full Exchange support and 3G, it fits the bill!

looks like the data plan is going to be $30 and no more revenue sharing either

AT&T .......

so in their release AT&T says that the profit-sharing is eliminated according to the new contract with Apple. Yet they are raising price for service. If the profit-sharing is eliminated, meaning, they don't have to pay a percentage each month to Apple from the subscription fees, should not that LOWER the monthly subscription price, rather than increase it? before AT&T's excuse was that they had to share with Apple, what's the excuse now?

they have to recoup the new subsidy.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

no!!!!!! Where is the "oh one more thing - new macbook pros!" :(

Intel is behind -Apple no fool, they will intro a 4 core as soon as INTC is ready - there are some out now, (4 core) but not to many and quite pricey - so that would translate to much higher for apple MBP. When INTC ramps up, the prices per 1000 cpu's will drop and when the 4 core becomes main stream, we'll see it.

Then the Mac Pro will be 16...whoo hoot.

It isn't veiled....

AT&T said:
In the near term, AT&T anticipates that the new agreement will likely result in some pressure on margins and earnings, reflecting the costs of subsidized device pricing, which, in turn, is expected to drive increased subscriber volumes.

The SE X1 is going to pwn the iPhone this year...

I expected a bigger Upgrade than this...

Would that be the SE X1 that still runs Windows Mobile (fancy UI front-end aside)?

I'm not going to hold my breath for it to "pwn" anything (my time with the Windows Mobile-based AT&T Tilt was enough for me to swear that platform off).

So the pricks at AT&T just raised the data prices for 3G from $20 to $30 per month, what a bummer..... I just might hang on to my version 1.0 a little longer.

3G costs more than EDGE; were you counting on 3G data service for the same price as EDGE-only? Note that with some phones 3G data costs $40 a month, so it's still a better deal.
