I Have an revision 1 macbook air, the question is, if i install the modded version os Mac OSX Unibody disc, and modify it to suport 4 fingers gesture, will software update recognise correctily and install future updates ?

Old MBP. Do we get the 4 finger swipe as well???

This is in response to what was going on 4 pages back, but I have a less than 2 week old 17" MBP and I can confirm that it does NOT support 4 finger gestures, despite the fact that the apple website states that it DOES. And that claim is STILL up there...

I just want to share my experiences with the hack here:

So the hack is as simple as those instructions. But the side effects aren't. I was happy with my new 4-finger gestures on my latest previous generation Macbook Pro. Software update worked fine even. But then problems arose.
The first, Quicktime. And apps using Quicktime: iTunes, Front Row. A crazy system-wide slow down... everything ran but insanely choppy slow. Wouldn't stop until the app was quit. Strangely though, Quicktime trailers accessed through Apple.com played fine.

However, things are still not to par. Another thing I've noticed:
My screen brightness settings. Max brightness seems a little dimmer than it was on my previous install. Min brightness is definitely not as low as it used to go.
My conclusions? This is enough problems already... and I'm assuming there's more. Certain installed components in system files that were tailored to the newer hardware just aren't as friendly.
I'm reverting back to the install disk that came with my MBP. 10.5.6, I await for your arrival. Hope this post helps somebody.

With the development of Multiclutch, you could employ the same 4-finger gestures in future releases. I heard the developer is currently developing the 4-finger gestures, so just look forward to that.
The thought of bricking my system is more than enough to steer me away from this hack. With multiclutch, you get an almost perfect solution.

Yes, 10.5.6 just released now but the early 08 MBP users already upgraded and are stating that the 4 finger swipe does NOT work.
Well I was hoping someone might have done the brave step already and confirmed success, or lack thereoff... just downloading and installing the update on my MBP-15"-jan08... so I guess I'll just have to find out for myself
Is that with or without the change to the info.plist as indicated a long time ago?

People just stated that their early 08 MBPs don't feature the 4 finger swipe after the 10.5.6 update.

Early to Mid 2008 Macbook Pros do not seem to support four-finger swipe. I just installed 10.5.6 and then modified my kernel extensions to support the four-finger swipe. I've succeeded in having the four-finger gestures show up in my trackpad preferences, but they simply do not work. Either something else needs to be done or the hardware simply does not support it.
Edit: I must have not modified my kernel extension properly. Using the file linked above, it works with the exception of app switching as trucrypt describes below.

did the target mode, replace the kext( as mentioned by someone in this thread), didn't even need to do repair disk it started working immediately after the reboot, but still did repair disk to be on the safe side. all is working like before
4-finger gestures sort of work after replacing the .kext under 10.5.6.
The video in the prefpane shows swiping to the right with four fingers then using one finger to select an open application. I'm having to swipe with four fingers, use two fingers to select an open app in the popup and then tap with four fingers to change to that app.
Seems like Apple's giving old MBP users the one-finger gesture by not including the new multitouch gesture in the new update.

does any early 08 macbook pro user experience strange behavior when opening quicktime or itunes? The current hack before 10.5.6 was having issues with anything related to quicktime.. the mouse pointer simply stopped moving for a couple of seconds when itunes/quicktime was opened or active.
Could any early 08 macbook pro user who has already changed the kext file please test this by just opening itunes while moving around the mouse to see if it works flawlessly?
This issue does not occur on macbook air early 08.

In the terminal i tried what you said and im getting this
Macintosh:~ Chris$ sudo mv /Users/Chris/Downloads/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext /System/Library/Extensions
mv: rename /Users/Chris/Downloads/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext to /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBMultitouch.kext: Directory not empty

"Hack" implemented, and now my early '08 MBP has four-finger gestures enabled. No weird side effects as far as I can tell.

now (even if probably nothing has changed) it would be cool to have the new 10.5.6 unibody kext, instead of using the "old" 10.5.5 one 🙂
