I just upgraded to this drive today. So far everything is well for the most part. The WD Scorpio Blue is just as loud as my stock Hitachi 250 gb. I'm barely able to hear the clicks that everyone talks about, but it's so faint that I don't even notice most of the time.

My only gripe however is the occasional pinwheel that lasts for about 10 seconds. It seems to be random and I've gotten it about 3 times within 2 hours. I'll see if this trouble continues. Hopefully not, or maybe a future remedy.

Other than that though I'm fairly content with the purchase. My MBP seems to run a bit faster and start up times have decreased by a good 10 seconds. I'd recommend it for now. Let's see how it holds up a month from now.

I just bought my first Mac a month ago and finally pulled the trigger on upgrading my memory and HD. I do not regret upgrading at all. I couldn't believe how easy it was to do it myself. There was so many references online to help me step by step.

No I don't regret at all but like many here have mentioned, I do hear a clicking sound every 5-10 seconds when I put my ear close to the computer. If I don't do that, I don't hear it and it's not a problem.

Go and buy the memory and HD from Newegg and enjoy the upgrade.

Does anyone have a new(mid09) MBP with the WD drive and NOT* have any of the noise issues?

EFI 1.7 cross-issues?

Could some of the problems mentioned here with regards to the mid-09 MBP be due to the EFI 1.7 firmware update? It'd be interesting if people could post whether or not they've made the firmware update.

From what I've seen, at least what it sounds like is that there is an extra bit of space inside the case after the hdd is replaced and it just resonates. The clicking/beeping sound could have a part in the firmware but it just seems hit or miss with the drive itself and not related specifically to a certain MBP.

What I don't understand is why do the 500GB drives Apple includes don't have any of these problems. Can there really be that much of a difference between the two :-/

I've not seen any posts from people with the mid-09 MBP + WD 500GB combo who've said that they DON'T hear the clicking noise, so at least for the mid-09s, we can't rule out that it's not model related just yet.

There was someone that had an older MBP and was having the clicking/beep issue and exchanged the WD 500GB drive for another and there was no longer any click/beep. So there is a possibility it's the drive itself. But who knows, could just be the model.

It's not firmware related. I skipped the EFI 1.7 update and the Scorpio Blue makes clicking noise.

are you mid-09?

I have a mid 2009 13" mbp with the 1.7 firmware update and a 500GB scorpio blue hd in it. Bought it new 3 weeks ago. Drive is very quiet and quick. No beach balls no clicking, very quiet. I'm very happy with it. In May I put another 500GB scorpio blue drive in my daughters 3 year old mbp. Very happy with that one to. Quiet, no clicking, quick.

This is a first, but could the scale continue to tip in the other direction? And you've got 1.7 update to boot! One more post like this, and I might not have to take my scorpio blue back to the store!

My MPB is a mid 09 with the 1.7 firmware update and these past couple days all the beach balls have stopped or if not dramatically decreased. As for the clicking noises, either my hearing is awful or I'm not hearing it anymore.

Bought one last night with an external housing from NewEgg. Should be here Weds. I'm trying to decide whether to put it in my MBP or my PS3. :p

I got my Scorpio Blue today, put it in the enclosure, and plugged it into my USB port. The disk drive holder's power light lit up but......nothing happened. OSX didn't recognize it. Then I opened disk utility. Nothing happened.

What do I have to do make it see it? I can't format it, because it has to SEE it in order to format it.

Could be the enclosure (and it's controller) or could be the HDD. Did you try to insert the HDD into your MacBook and run Disk Utility off the installation disc to see if it can detect it?
