I think this is the most impressive set of updates since the move to intel. Very very nice. That's a hard to beat product lineup.

It is certainly true with regard to aesthetics. Everyone will want one. Come on, how many people will walk by a desktop from a PC manufacturer and say, "Wow! That is really nice. [Think: I want one] Where did you get that?" Few. But with these new iMacs, I think there will be a strong visual appeal to most people. Strong sales for another quarter, coming up!

Still is. I'm pricing a hackintosh i7 build with twice the ram as well as faster ram, better video card and a 27" monitor and i'm still $700 cheaper.

Though i'd like to get this new imac and am still considering it, it's the 4850 that's holding me back. At the resolution of of the 27" imac it can barely handle CoD4. I'm still waiting to see some WoW and Sims 3 benchmarks. And i'd like to eventually run Modern Warfare 2 on it.

That is a very solid point. Honestly, I didn't even think about that. Do these have some integrated + dedicated graphics?

SL should be able to use both... maybe. Plus - I would think that a QuadCore would be very helpful with any game.

For those who are still asking about the video input on the new 27" iMacs, you can start with these two previous posts:

Short answer, unless the device you want to connect has a native DisplayPort output then you'll likely need to spend $150 to $200 to attach any DVI/HDMI device to the iMac. Thus, you won't be able to just plug-in your Wii or Blu-ray player and use the iMac as a display for that device.

Is this an absolute certainty, no, but see the other posts (above).

What about the miniDP DVI adapter I'm using right now to go to my DVI display? does that not work the other way around?

What about any of these cables, any luck?
http://estore.circuitassembly.com/categories/Adapters/Mini-Displayport/

I'm not too concerned with a PS3 or dvd player into this thing, I just want to plug my MBP into it (unibody) and have the iMac running in the background, recording TV, streaming my eyeTV library and iTunes, encoding video, running some Linux virtual machines, etc..

Hey anyone, would you please tell me whether the input video of iMac 27 can be used with Wii or PS3 or WD Media Player? Thank you

is i7 or i5 model significantly different from core 2 duo model?

Would i5 or i7 Quadcore iMac 27 be significantly different from Core 2 Duo iMac 27??

What kinds of program should I do if I want to feel the performance difference??

The cables don't work both ways. This is why you can't drive the existing 24" Apple Cinema Display with a simple cable or DVI adapter. To convert the DVI signal to DisplayPort you need something like the following:

http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-p-17859.html

However, if your MBP has a Mini DisplayPort on it you'll be able to connect it directly to the iMac. If it has only DVI output then you'll probably need one of those $150+ video converters (see above link) and even then it won't run the display at full resolution.

leaving out the fact that its still a glossy display I wonder how well this new monitor will work for photo work. I have my 24" Imac's brightness turned all the way down, and its still bright. Wonder how the new LED will be.

I might have to take a loss on this unit I have had for just 7 months to get one of these newer ones.

finally i am ready to purchase an imac and this new upgrade is quite significant on many fronts with 27", SD connection for my photography uploading, and even quad-core for under $2K - unbelievable.

Hi,

I'm interested in this imac update (I was thinking of a single core mac pro but this seems like a decent alternative ) but am wondering if I can add my existing monitor to it for dual monitor output ? My existing monitor has both dvi and hdmi inputs and i also have a hdmi to mini dp adapter for my macbook pro)

I dont know the imac line that well so excuse my ignorance :)

Thanks

Despite those stunning great new features of the new iMac, the lack of a Bluray drive appears to be more and more an obvious miss in the iMacs because they have a huge screen up to 27" with resolution higher than 1080P now.

But anyway, Apple has been offering products with great design, great user experience that lacks some important (if not standard) features, this is *by design*. Yet, they have great success over these years.

As with the experience of iPhone (i.e. iPhone has become a great product with closer-to-complete features since the introduction of the 3GS), if you thought that an iMac was very attractive 2 years ago, buy it now. If you have just started to have interest in it, buy it 2 years later, I'm sure Apple will have the features you want at that time.

Prices will surely drop

after the holidays or not long after. I'd much rather see how this shakes out before being the first one to buy. I apply this to pretty much any product, be it a car or an HDTV. And haven't been sorry yet.

Bummer about the FW though, among a few other things.

I still dig my logitech nano mouse, so the new one doesn't seem that big of a deal to me. Will stay tuned for any issues that arise - if there are any. The brightness issue will be interesting - drives me bonkers now. My 2008 iMac and MB still work just fine. ;)

Funny how so many peeps are in the dumps with the economy, but when any new Mac stuff comes out, so does the CC. As a homeowner, I still gotta pay those prop taxes - right before Xmas, of course. Plus husband just got laid off. Sorry for the whine - really.....

It's 2009... And despite all it's designers and billions of dollar, Apple can't engineer even the most basic ergonomic functionality into their monitor or their AIO dekstop computer - the ability to adjust the height of the display.

Personally I don't want to pay for height adjustment on my displays. It's easy to adjust the height of the screen. My imac is sitting on a stand on my desk.

LOL, why on earth would Apple drop firewire again? After all the **** they got for doing it with the MBP's, why would you even THINK about doing that for NEWER models? Just blows my mind ...

Yah I am also wondering what exactly it is.
Thanks : )

Apple isn't being very detailed about the feature, but a small sentence or two from the iMac's webpage says this:

The Mini DisplayPort lets you connect an external display, including the Apple LED Cinema Display, to your iMac. On the 27-inch iMac, the same port offers input, too. So you can connect any external source that has DisplayPort output — including a MacBook or MacBook Pro — and use your iMac as a display.

source: http://www.apple.com/imac/features.html towards the bottom of the page

Which is saying that if you have a machine with displayport out (all recent macbook pros, imacs, mac minis, and mac pros) you can run a mini displayport cable from your laptop or mini or whatever to the new 27" imac (not 21.5") and you can use the 27" display as an external display for whatever you plugged into it.

It is becoming more clear, especially with the direct quote, that you will NOT be able to plug in a PS3 or other HDMI source to this without some kind of converter, discussed on page 8 of this thread.

Anywho, great feature I think. I have a mid-09 unibody and I'd love to plug it into a 27" display that was a fully functioning computer in the background to stream media and act as an additional machine if I need it for FCE or movie encoding.

@fpnc, this quote seems to sum it up. No external source unless it has DP out. Not a huge issue for me, as I'm not trying to plug anything but my mid-09 MBP into it. I assume there'll be grief from others about it though. But us Apple users are picky, no?

help!!!!

Depends on what you are going to do with the computer. Do not buy the imac if you are going to game whatsoever. Most people usually just surf the internet, email and run office applications. This iMac is way overkill for that but it will be great at those tasks. i7 for video encoding will be great. When the first reviews come out for gaming and people see that a 512MB video card running a screen of that size at that resolution will immediately force you into low to medium settings people are going to be upset. If you don't care about that then I think this iMac is great for you.

im SO confused now... i've had a failed imac due to video card issues, apple is going to replace it free, now that the new ones have come out i was gonna get the highest one but then i read this. i use a "game" called second life (www.secondlife.com) and these specs are far above what is required.

im so confused as why they say it's perfect for gaming then i read this quote. im not technical at all but i want to know as i am getting it basically free (well i paid for an upgrade to 528 ram, etc)

any help would be so appreciated. my friends say get a mac pro but i like imacs.

help!!!

thanks!

New Macbook. Hmmn, let's see.

No FW. Combined audio in/out.

That's an update???

They dropped FW in the unibody, caught a storm of complaints, brought it back. So now lets drop it from the white Macbook?

I really don't get it. Unless this is an attempt to "move" users who value those features to the unibody. Which doesn't have a matte screen option.

Apple what are you DOING?

Apple isn't being very detailed about the feature, but a small sentence or two from the iMac's webpage.

Macworld confirmed with Apple that it will handle devices such as DVD players too (quirky way to get Blu-ray playback). So, it doesn’t look like it’s confined to DisplayPort only sources. Obviously, you’ll need an adapter.

"In a clever touch, the 27-inch iMac has a new feature that dramatically increases its versatility. Via a series of adapters Apple says will be available shortly, users will be able to attach external display sources, such a DVD players or even other computers, to the iMac’s display. At that point, those sources will take over the iMac’s display, effectively turning it into an external monitor or an HDTV.”

http://www.macworld.com/article/143394/2009/10/imac.html

The big question is how does it work? By the marketing name, “Target Display Mode” it sounds as if it’ll be an EFI feature like “Target Disk Mode.” But no one seems to have answered that yet.

It would awesome if the display just automatically switched over once a cable was plugged into the DisplayPort. Then, we could plug our MacBooks into the iMac if it’s busy and use it as a display or switch over to play a video game or watch TV.

I’m seriously looking at this to replace my 26” HDTV in my bedroom.

Edit: Macworld’s Jason Snell says he was specifically told DVD players as an example at his briefing with Apple.
