Even with the lowish price I still don't see the point. I would much rather have a fully functional laptop.

And that desktop's so ugly I was sure it was a joke.

No GPS and no camera are disappointments, too.

If it had GPS, I could see this, for example, in police cars, replacing the expensive notebooks they use now. (Guess they'd have to come up with one that can take a beating, though.) Now there's no reason for ProClip to come out with the car mount any time soon. ;( (Would make a nice giant GPS display...)

See, I'm NOT a total fanboy!

It does have GPS. I would have liked to see a forward-facing camera, though.

Far from (snort) "magical", but they are going in the right direction. They just, in typical Apple fashion of late, completely under-deliver. This should've had a camera! This should've FINALLY had multi-tasking to bring it into the 20th century! This should've had a port or two to make it more usable! This should've had more than 64Gigs of Memory! Give me a frickin' break! That amount of memory in this day and age is pathetic. This should've had the GPS! And a card port for chrissake, not some dongle crap to plug in (although I appreciate the ability to do that - just hate the dongle - and wondering if that means I can expand the memory using cards).

Now, I love everything else, that is exactly what I wanted - the iPod interface, the apps, the books, the size, that is all great! They did that right. And I was actually impressed with their iWork (though MS Office Online will make that a moot point for most of us). And mind you, I am NOT a Mac Fan-boy. But after using an iPod Touch, the thing I wanted around the house was a big version to surf and read with. Those are great experiences on the touch but too small which is annoying. The battery life is impressive, which it wasn't on the Touch. Not sure if reading on this screen will be worse than on a eInk screen though. The price is acceptable as well...if it had the features above. Not sure if I will actually buy one until they bring it up to speed. I returned my iPod touch, waiting for the next iteration which I hope will be the one with adequate features.

This is not a device for me at the moment - i am too much of a power user, and i live in a small apartment. BUT, i do see a huge opportunity in this product.

My parents. They have a pretty big house, they don't wan't to go to the office of the house to get their house, and they dont want their computer to be in the living room, its just too big and ugly. Here the iPad fits perfectly, if my dad wants to watch tv but my mom doesn't, she can just take the iPad (which is small and pretty, something you don't have to put away) and surf, listen to music, read, find a recipe for some food, watch something else, whatever - its so easy.. They really need to get home-banking on this mofo. If i had a bigger house i would be on this PRONTO.
I also see it useful on trainrides and soforth as a netbook alternative, but in my opinion it's a livingroom/kitchen computer.

This is the most important slide in the presentation:
[*]

It is a device to drive content and make Apple some more money. There is nothing new here bar the touch based iWork and a keyboard dock. Its a big iPod Touch with a lot missing. Nothing exciting or revolutionary. All a bit dull really.

This slide really bothers me. It sorta paints Apple as a greedy corporation peddling wares onto consumers (125m w/credit cards) that can't really afford it. In this day and age of post-consumerism it's very telling.

now.... which credit card is not maxed out....

I think you're all nuts. The kids are going to love it and I guarantee, guaranteethat after the overhype wears off and everyone goes and has a drink to calm their nerves every one of you naysayers will crave this. Guaranteed.

The best way to counter an extreme argument is NOT to go all the way to the other end and throw an even more extreme argument from there, dude.

iPad Camera Connection Kit
The Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera. The Camera Connector lets you import your photos and videos to iPad using the camera’s USB cable. Or you can use the SD Card Reader to import photos and videos directly from the camera’s SD card.

Does anyone else really wish this (especially the SD card reader) worked with the iPod/iPhone?

They used to have one, and dumped it, and now it comes back really low-key only for the iPad?

If I was rich I might get one. I think it's very cool, just not practical for the average user.

Could not disagree more. It's imminently practical for the average user. It's not practical for the power user. Maybe that is why so many here are unhappy. I think it's great and can't wait to put my order in for a wi-fi model -- just have to figure out 32 or 64GB.

One thing I haven't seen answered yet.... if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch already can you use your paid apps/games on the iPad or are they going to make you buy them all over again??

Will Apple develop custom processors for all of their products?

I'm interested to see the performance gains from using the A4 chip.

Not for Macs. 99.9% sure they wouldn't be able to run Windows and the strong point of this processor is high performance per watt on the low-end of the scale. It wouldn't be able to compete with Core 2 Duos and Core i3/ i5/ i7s etc.

From the tech specs page on apple.com:

  • 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
  • 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)

To my knowledge, that is NOT A WIDESCREEN display.

Noticed that too.

I am just in shock that they took the 16gig flash from the ipod touch they discontinued and put it in a device that is tiered above the ipod/phone.

plus the 100, jump from 16-32-64.

its awful convenient for apple they didn't put an sd slot on this forcing people to shell out the extra dough to get more memory.

It will probably do well until the hype dies down, and like netbooks people figure out they need something more robust.

I just cant see it over an ipod touch myself. If you want a couch browser sure its great. but it is not a device you would carry everywhere like i do my palm or an ipod touch. but it is definitely a better browser.

it will do well for the crowd that only uses netbooks for web browsing, but the extreme mark up on memory and lack of camera and expansion just make it seem like the luxury ipod touch to me. I mean hey if you like blowing cash to flaunt your status by driving a luxury vehicle , this is for you. but functionally I dont see it other than the screen, thats really all this device has on an ipod touch thats it, nothing else. I am not going to slam it like others but I am not going to bounce around like a drooling puppy kissing steve jobs tail end like he has pulled something amazing out of his backside either, because what did he even do? I mean come on its a giant ipod touch, where exactly is the so called innovation that he has been rumored to be so proud of?

all the people who are bashing it...what else do you expect from a tablet?

It does what it's supposed to do..Its for people who travel a lot want something in between their laptops and iphone...i think its a good device...and well the A4 chip can be used in the next iphone

I expect something closer to a laptop, than a phone, honestly.

Multitasking, Non-Closed OS, new interface (not just iphone OS X).
Flash support (Hulu, Native Youtube).
Windows Support (Windows Media, Silverlight, etc).

In short:
I want a device that can surf the web. The full web.

I want to be able to SAVE word documents, pdfs, etc.

I want to run multiple apps at once. Facebook open on the side (20% of screen) with Mail using the rest (80%).

The Hardware is fine. But the rest of this device is phoned in. It's just a big iphone. Who is going to buy this?

I just noticed on this page that it talks about a camera connection kit for the 30-pin connector. So you may be able to do video chat after all..

http://www.apple.com/ipad/design/
The camera kit is for connecting photo cameras to it... check the specs page. Either by USB cable, or there's a card reader that attaches to the 30-pin connector.

So yes, viewing photos in the field on an IPS display is possible.

Missing...

Following are missing:
- Multitasking (can be done, but how long can one wait?)
- Front facing camera (this is not even innovation and is absolutely required... add $30 and put a damn camera on the front)
- Open model (do we still have to go through the whole app store crap?)

I hope android will cash in on the shortcomings of this device. The major downside for android devices is content. Sigh.

No Killer Features, plus the price is through the roof...I'll pass.

What about Flash? 1 Ghz Chip inside that can play high-def, yet there is no Flash Support. If there was, you can guarantee Apple would have said something.
