Well... I really dunno about this one... The big screen looks lovely, but where is the file management app? XCode would have been nice too... If you're going to run scaled down desktop class applications you will need file management at the very least; you will want to share files between apps! I heard no mention of it... please correct me if i'm wrong...

I wish they had revamped the iphone springboard; it's showing it's age.
The pictures make it look LITERALLY like a really big iPhone / iPod Touch and that kinda makes it look cartoonish; almost comical...!

I think it's a mistake to just make a bigger iphone and expect it to succeed like the iphone did; this isn't a "fit in your pocket" device and they needed to adjust the design to account for that... People will use a tablet for different things.

I'm not sure they've done enough here to get over the curse of the tablet form factor.

Oh dear, i think i'm disappointed and really didn't want to be :(

I will however watch the vid when they make it available, it might change my opinion.

For the first time i think apple have made a device that isn't for me...

Yeah, major disappointment in that regard.

Apple seems alarmingly casual about the Android assault, and you can bet Microsoft will be showing off its iPhone OS knockoff in a couple of weeks.

And the lack of MacBook updates - well, maybe this wasn't the venue for it, but they should have announced updates prior. Where the heck are the iX processor MacBook Pros???

I convinced my mom over a month ago to hold off on buying an iPhone and a MacBook until after today, expecting updates to both. This will be a painful phone call to make...
It does hurt. I was ready to buy an iPod Touch 4G if it was "good enough" and sporting a multitasking iPhone OS 4.0.

We got the iPad and at the bargain basement price I can imagine it taking on a netbook in it's Super iPod Tocuh way but that was it. Even with the application store integration, it's nothing new.

I recall my posts on how this device doesn't have the benefits of any of the products falling in around an iSlate.

1) How is $150 "almost $200 more"? It's 25% less.

2) The Nook is $350 and only comes with 2GB RAM and is only an e-Reader

3) 3G service is NOT a contract. You can buy it when you need it and then cancel when you don't. So it's not $30 to ATT every month. It's $30 to ATT every month you need 3G service.

4) If you never need 3G then you are not forced to pay for the radio. You can just use Wi-Fi.

Mark your calendar. The Kindle and Nook death watch began today. It will be a cult product a year from today.

So true about the death watch. Go to Amazon and the forum and they've been waiting for the other shoe to drop and it has. However, there will be another battle...buying from Amazon is a strong habit and I would prefer buying my ebooks from Amazon. So the future will be determined not by the "razor" but by how and how much the "razor" blades are provided. Capture what I post here and see if in 2 years I am right. You heard it here first.

There's a lot of terrified reactionary astro-turfing going on here right now but regardless anyone who can't understand why this will sell half a billion units in the next five years fails to understand the technical needs and capabilities of a billion everyday people who just want to use the internet.

Apple just released the first Model T Ford of the internet Age.

problem is, the input method is absolutely horrible. as for this being a model T for the internet, i'd say a cheap netbook would be a better alternative for those who just want to browse the internet

if you want to see what the iPad should have at least resembled take at look at Courier

http://gizmodo.com/5365299/courier-first-details-of-microsofts-secret-tablet

what Apple released today is an eBook reader on steriods, if that is the market they wanted to tackle then they hit the mark, if they were trying to bring in some paradigm to computing then they completely missed the mark as this thing doesn't really qualify as a modern computer, it can't do more than 1 thing at the same time, all that computing power put to waste, i have another device that only does 1 task at a time it's called a calculator.

not having multitask on a phone makes sense since it is a phone, but to leave it off of a "computer" is ridiculous.

Im going to reserve judgement until i actually get to use and see one in real life. My first thoughts are it wouldn't replace my iphone as i wouldn't take it everywhere with me. I certainly wouldn't use one to read a book on the way to work as it looks quite big and would surely be a thief magnet. I wouldn't be able to pocket it so i would need a separate bag to place it in. Then it means i have to carry a bag round all day if i wanted to surf the net. Id much rather use my iphone for this.

So then this must be aimed more at people who do carry laptops with them a lot. But would they find it more useful than a MB/MB air?

It has no flash so i dont see how it is an improvement over the iphone web browsing experience other than having bigger screen.

I don't see the point of the iPad. $500 for scaled-up iPhone apps? It's a neat toy to keep lying around on the coffee table (for those who can afford it), but nothing else.

They put up a video of some Apple employees talking about it. It looks fun to use. I think I'll wait though. A few things are missing that may come in the first update that would be kind of essential.

I don't want to have to sync it with my CPU. I want to be able to use it to sync my iPod with. It kind of needs a camera for video conferencing. Multitasking.

It's cool that it can use all of the apps, but most of the apps are really built to run on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Facebook just looked silly like that. I'm sure all the major apps will be updated. Because some of the apps can utilize the screen much better by displaying more information or giving you more controls.

It's an OK first try. It's going to take some user feedback to get right. Eventually it'll turn into something useful. I saw some things I really liked. I liked the keyboard dock, and some of the games look cool. But it's kind of like the first iPhone in that it needed constructive criticism. They updated it heavily over the course of the last 2.5+ years.

I also think when iPhone OS 4.0 is announced, lots of new features will be added to the iPad. The fact that it can't multitask seems ridiculous. I'll bet they want to announce that in March when they usually announce new iPhone OS updates.

Expect the WiFi only model to clobber the 3G model. It's not a phone. Most people who will use it, will most likely use it at home, at school, at work, at a hotel. Most of those places have WiFi. I thought for sure they would announce tethering to your iPhone. Oh well. There will probably be a "hack for that". ;)

wow only a device a fanboy could love

good lord - how do u fanboys get excited over this huge failure?

open ur eyes - it's a stupid big itouch - no reason to get one

Anyone who thinks an iPhone/iPod touch owner has no possible desire for the iPad (holy cow I hate that name) obviously grapples with the concept of scale:

ipad-vs-iphone-2.jpg

I'm not sure why you all care about an awful camera on a tablet. There isn't much use for one. If that is really your deciding factor on whether or not you would purchase one you have some weird expectations.

GPS on the other hand would be somewhat useful although not much because most of you already have some form of it on your phone.

THE ONLY THING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IS THAT THERE IS NOTHING NEW. NO INNOVATION. KIND OF DISAPPOINTING, BUT A LOT OF THINGS APPLE DOES IS HIT AND MISS. NOT A SUPRISE.

A brand new 100% touch interface OS experience ? - 1st of a new breed of productivity apps designed entirely for touch - and that's not innovation ? - if that's your take you simply don't understand how outdated the desktop mouse metaphor really is.

You have't even seen the file system yet - cos there will be one for iWork - and that doesn't need a mouse pointer.

Yes, this is early days but this is the future here today - dirt cheap.

Reading these posts, now I remember why I don't visit MacRumors anymore. You people are so damn negative!
Don't worry, just bookmark the thread so you can use it for mockery purposes later, like the old iPod thread from 2001.

MR is full of tech nerds who have trouble understanding that the sum of a product is greater than its parts. You can't extrapolate what it's like to use the iPad by looking at the specs. The actual product is the feeling you get from the hands-on experience. It comes across pretty well in the video.

HUGE FAIL!

But I called it. It's clear that you can't carry it in your pocket, so if you have to lug something around, might as well take your lap top which has a keyboard, and other programs you're gonna use.

This thing is gonna sell like the macbook air and apple TV.

The ad on the Apple Website shows some "connector" that lets you put your photos on. But if it isn't running iLife(iPhoto), what good would having your pictures on there do? I'm really trying to like this for travel, because it weighs so little, and if I could store pics it would help. I know, I can see it in the store if/when it finally gets there, but I'm naturally curious now.

Wrong. Junk is junk. $1 or $10,000. I'm the biggest pro-Apple person, probably ever, but this thing is worthless. Plain and simple.
It is going to sell millions cause it fits right into our digital lifestyle. Wait unitl handwriting come into play. I can't wait.

The indifference?

Wow, I've never seen so many comments yet so little ratings.

Looks like despite all the negative comments (to me, warranted), there's no reflection of this in the rating of this article. Maybe nobody's had the time w/ all the constant flood of updated comments.

I can't believe some of the negative responses here. This thing at a starting price of $500 will destroy sales on most Netbooks and E-Readers.
