Ok, the specs are a real joke;

1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)

I am surprised by the 4:3 form factor. What were they thinking?

The resolution is consistent with the 13" Macbook, though. iPhone needs the higher ppi because of the small size. It's a pain for older users with presbyopia, though - we can't really use the resolution. Maybe this is targeted more for grandma and grandpa. ;)

720p on external display is also a disappointment. Doesn't the iPhone already do better than this?

No GPS and no camera are disappointments, too.

If it had GPS, I could see this, for example, in police cars, replacing the expensive notebooks they use now. (Guess they'd have to come up with one that can take a beating, though.) Now there's no reason for ProClip to come out with the car mount any time soon. ;( (Would make a nice giant GPS display...)

See, I'm NOT a total fanboy!

I'm not sure why you all care about an awful camera on a tablet. There isn't much use for one. If that is really your deciding factor on whether or not you would purchase one you have some weird expectations.

GPS on the other hand would be somewhat useful although not much because most of you already have some form of it on your phone.

THE ONLY THING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IS THAT THERE IS NOTHING NEW. NO INNOVATION. KIND OF DISAPPOINTING, BUT A LOT OF THINGS APPLE DOES IS HIT AND MISS. NOT A SUPRISE.

The original Kindle's initial price was $400, with less than half a gb of internal storage. At $500, I think it's pretty clear that Apple didn't try to make a real netbook competitor; instead they bypassed the sector completely and upped the ante by designing a larger-format web-browsing/multimedia device aimed mostly at the consumer market while throwing a bone to business users by redesigning iWork. It's disappointing that multitasking doesn't seem to have been implemented.

Screw AT&T. If I ever get an iPad, I'll use it with a Verizon MiFi.

But no Flash will make a surfer like me take a long pause. Too many sites on my iPod Touch are useless due to lack of flash.

s.

Once HTML5 comes out of beta on Youtube and they phase flash out of the site - the significant parts of internet will also change away within 12 months.

Only negative I see is no stylus. Otherwise its perfect for my needs. I can read the newspaper and books on the train. When I am running my meetings, I have everything I need right there no more shifting though paper or trying to look stuff up on my iPhone.

I don't understand what there is to bitch about here.. Look at it from the media ebook standpoint. $489 buys me a kindle dx... for 10 bucks more i get an iPad... How is that a bad deal??

But KindleDX is using e-ink which is supposed to be as readable as the printed page and which really drives up the price. It remains to be seen how useable the iPad will be as an e-book reader.

I was kinda hoping Apple would reveal that they are using a Pixel Qi display which can be used with/without a backlight so it can be used as either a Kindle-quality grayscale e-reader or as a regular backlit color display. Google "Pixel Qi" or "Notion Ink" if you want to see a true eReader/Tablet hybrid.

Though it will probably sell a lot just because it looks nice and because of all the apple diehards, I won't be getting one of these. I was hoping for a builtin iSight so I can give this to my mom and grandma so they can use it for skype. My grandma cannot be bothered with turning on and logging on to a computer.

Don't get me wrong, I like everything else about it. Even the fact that it's basically an oversized iTouch. But the front-facing camera would have been the selling point for me.

I'll have to wait 18 months for version 2, I guess. I hope you guys don't buy too much so apple would put more features on it quicker.

Nice to see the price a little lower than expected, but I wanted a full OS so for me a netbook makes more sense..maybe if I was looking for a ebook reader then that would be different. I'm just sort of meh about the whole thing.

Uhh, have you ever seen/read anything off an e-ink screen? Extremely pleasant on the eyes... Much, much better than any LCD screen I've seen (IPS or just cheap TN). It's not about the wow-factor (ooooh bright coloured book!), it's about how your eyes feel after finishing a book on a dimly lit trans-pacific flight.

This "iPad" device might have potential if the apps that start appearing are innovative enough, but if we get the same slew of stupid gimmicky fart apps, then it would seem that this is a large iPod touch with iWork. I am not sure about the potential for that.

Lastly, many, many people, when comparing this to the Kindle forget one crucial factor: the Kindle has free 3G. Yes, FREE 3G. If you buy a Kindle, anywhere in the US where there is coverage, you can pop onto their store and buy a ebook. However, with the iPad, you need to pay a monthly subscription, even if this were all you needed to do.

Yes, I have a Kindle DX. E-Ink vs LCD was not in dispute.

The problem was with your phrasing. There is nothing about IPS that makes it worse for reading, yet that is what your sentence read like. Instead of picking out IPS simply because that is the type of panel Apple is using, generalizing to LCD would make more sense toward proving your point (which doesn't need to be proved in the first place since it is common knowledge.)

The Kindle 3G is not free. It is built into the price of the books. Ever sent a document to your Kindle? Get ready for data charges. While the cost is hidden in the books already low price, you are not getting free 3G. In addition, the capabilities of the iPad far exceed that of the Kindle when it comes to internet based content. I would never use my Kindle to browse the web, but I would use an iPad. Therein lies the difference. (Also, I am not sure if Amazon charges for web usage, they charge for documents which makes me think they do. I have never been clear on this.)

PRO
Pricing not bad at all
No data plans/contracts needed!!!

MAJOR CON (for me)
No flash/Hulu watching in bed
No multi-tasking
No downloading of full papers

*All the cons are based on what I've seen.

As for full newspaper downloading, here's the issue: I live in NYC and I want to carry this on the subway to read the paper. The Kindle delivers the whole paper to your device. The iPad seems to be web based. No wifi in subway = no reading the paper on the train.

Mutli-user? My guess is no

Already disappointed by lack of camera. What would have sold me given that deficiency would be the capacity for my wife and I to have separate profiles on the device, like we do with her MacBook. Haven't seen anything about that.

I'm very disappointed that there were no announcements about the iPhone or iPhone OS. I couldn't care less about the iPad, but I thought at least some kind of bone would be tossed out to the rest of us. Oh well.

The iPlop has arrived. No WebCam, video coferencing, no deal. I knew it was going to be an at&t device when no cam was in view.

They simply do not have the network for it. The date plan is for a 3G iPod Touch. Not a tool to "change the way I do things".

Not by a mile.

Time to go Steve. Let Tim be CEO.

it's... it's... its....

A GIANT iPHONE!!!

Or, not , because I'm not surprised, because I totally called it. It's a giant iphone that doesn't do a lot of what an iphone does, and doesn't fit in your pocket. Uh.... ....it's coool, and all...... but uh.... WHY!?

If I was rich I might get one. I think it's very cool, just not practical for the average user.

After all these years, after all the dreaming and hoping of this tablet, after all the billions of dollars of profit Apple has made from us....this is what we get???
You gotta be kidding me.

yeah, and no support for protools, adobe cs and bootcamp... :)

I think you're all nuts. The kids are going to love it and I guarantee, guaranteethat after the overhype wears off and everyone goes and has a drink to calm their nerves every one of you naysayers will crave this. Guaranteed.

Lots of nerd rage going on with this thing. Good thing you all are a tiny tiny percentage of the people out there.

For the average person, like my entire family who are not computer nerds, this will be a huge hit.

But it's been pretty entertaining reading all the nerd rage here and other forums. :D

Where can you buy a Macbook Pro for $499? Hell for $849?

if you think this is a Macbook Pro, you are mistaking dearly! No multitasking, no real software, no camera. This iPad is VERY basic. I was considering replacing my unibody aluminum Macbook with this, but unfortunately that won't be happening.

i see this as an impulse buy, but nothing revolutionary. I dont see it selling that well either. Wheres the revolutionary new OS? Wheres the new tablet specific features like a tablet specific ipaint, or notepad that recognizes handwriting or something? I honestly see the newton as much more revolutionary than this when it came out.

Neck pain from typing?

I'm sitting at my desk now, trying to imagine typing on the iPad w/o the external keyboard. You place it face down and type, but can you imagine doing that for long? Would you have severe neck pain? If you're on your computer now, look down at your keyboard. Now, keep looking at it, as if your keyboard is also your screen. Now, try this for 30 minutes....Fun, right?

Maybe if you're sitting in bed, and hold the iPad propped up on your lap, then maybe?

For typing "on the go", it seems impractical, unless you really can use your thumbs only. And even then, isn't doing this on an iPhone so much easier? Granted, I haven't had one in my hands yet, but it seems telling that Apple hasn't shown much typing on this in their demonstration and video.
