I'm glad Apple approved this, but I didn't really expect them not to. Opera's media blitz/hype over the submission was utterly ridiculous - I'd have rejected the app just for all that nonsense, but that's just me.
Page rendering does seem faster than Safari, but the inability to read a damn thing on most sites without zooming in or forcing the browser to run in 'mobile' mode is unacceptable for my needs - not to mention the quirky zooming issues.
I literally thought 'surely this is a bug' in regards to the miniature scribble text on zoomed out pages when I first started it up, but after playing around with the settings and stuff, it's apparent that it's 'supposed' to look like that. It's difficult for me to accept that limitation when the same pages are perfectly readable at the same zoom level in Safari.
I hate sounding so critical, but I really like playing around with different browsers/tools, even though I'm more than happy with Safari, and I feel the Opera Mini is a bit of a let down. Much like it's cousin on the desktop, Opera sounds great on paper and the extra functions seem incredibly useful, but in the real world (at least for me), there are just too many issues for it to supplant Safari
It frustrates me to no end, as I had high hopes this could be a 'go-to' tool for me. Like Blender3D, Opera desktop, and various other open source or "the little guy" type products, I desire to use them and will download each new build to keep trying them out - hopefully one day these potentially great tools won't end up relegated to my trash bin.
Nice first attempt, Opera Mini, I'll see you again on the next build. Maybe you'll be useful for me then. Nice job on approving this app Apple, and a big thank you to Opera for the effort.
