It's not bad. Certainly not a replacement for Safari, but it's something different and interesting. The scrolling and zooming are way too stiff and wonky.

Going back and forward to pages is MUCH better than Safari. And switching between tabs is much better because it preserves the page unlike Safari.

However, the zooming needs work and the landscape view needs work. No doubt they will fix in updates...

Seeing as 3G is basically useless here in Boulder, CO (with 3G turned on we get dropped calls, missed / delayed voice mails etc) it will be great for light surfing on good old edge when I'm out and about.

I have noticed that it doesn't render some pages correctly - pinches a paragraph on a site I'm working on and the text is rendered as a long column. Does the same on another Drupal site I designed with a image / video carousel. The carousel doesn't seem to work at all: the arrows that switch the images cause the page to just reload and not switch images.

The zooming is funky: there appears to be no intermediate view, you see the entire page (basically little squiggly lines in place of the text it seems) then you zoom in to see the large text. Guess it's part of their compression technology???

Overall, a great browser for the poor bastards like myself who are stuck in 2007 with Edge. I will definitely be using it out in the field - thanks Opera!

It doesn't render ANY page correctly. I posted a scathing review of this thong, but since I did it from Opera, it didn't work. None of my sites show correctly. Not any site does. Not even Macrumors. I would use Safari on Edge over this. You can't reading anything without zooming. Which you'll discover has only two zoom levels- wide, which is illegible, and close, which isn't anywhere near as close as iPhone gets.

It's a joke. Worse than
full Opera browser, and that's hard to do.

I am just happy they got approved despite the App competing with Safari. That being said, the interface needs some work. I'll leave it installed, but wait for use until after a few updates.

Needs work. You can't tap the top status bar to return to the top of the page which can get irritating
Yeah, you can.

Anyways. It's awesome that Apple let this one through. That said, it sucks when it comes to actually working flawlessly. It feels like it's kinda still in beta. Maybe it'll get better with a couple of updates. I like how it handles tabs.

It's not flawless enough to make me switch, as of right now. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be way better on the iPad. It seems a little crammed.

I'm glad Apple approved this, but I didn't really expect them not to. Opera's media blitz/hype over the submission was utterly ridiculous - I'd have rejected the app just for all that nonsense, but that's just me. :D

Page rendering does seem faster than Safari, but the inability to read a damn thing on most sites without zooming in or forcing the browser to run in 'mobile' mode is unacceptable for my needs - not to mention the quirky zooming issues.

I literally thought 'surely this is a bug' in regards to the miniature scribble text on zoomed out pages when I first started it up, but after playing around with the settings and stuff, it's apparent that it's 'supposed' to look like that. It's difficult for me to accept that limitation when the same pages are perfectly readable at the same zoom level in Safari.

I hate sounding so critical, but I really like playing around with different browsers/tools, even though I'm more than happy with Safari, and I feel the Opera Mini is a bit of a let down. Much like it's cousin on the desktop, Opera sounds great on paper and the extra functions seem incredibly useful, but in the real world (at least for me), there are just too many issues for it to supplant Safari

It frustrates me to no end, as I had high hopes this could be a 'go-to' tool for me. Like Blender3D, Opera desktop, and various other open source or "the little guy" type products, I desire to use them and will download each new build to keep trying them out - hopefully one day these potentially great tools won't end up relegated to my trash bin.

Nice first attempt, Opera Mini, I'll see you again on the next build. Maybe you'll be useful for me then. Nice job on approving this app Apple, and a big thank you to Opera for the effort.

Interesting

I'm starting to think Apple approved this just to show how nice Safari is by comparison. Don't get me wrong. Opera has it's advantages. It's quite speedy and searching for text within a webpage is great, but I find it ironic that Safari renders opera.com correctly and Opera doesn't. I'm glad it was approved but there is a LOT of work left to be done.

I bought it for my iPhone and it was just updated for the iPad. It's great having it on the iPad and not having to switch screens to change tabs. Also if you disable ads it's faster than safari.

OMG!! I have no reason to use Safari again after buying the Atomic web browser! The tabs work beautifully! It's faster than safari with AdBlock plus I can watch Youtube FullScreen from the browser. This is hands down THE best browser currently for the iPad, def NOT Opera.

If you're on wifi or have a good 3G connection then safari is better. Opera Mini is much faster than safari when you're on edge. I'll keep it on my iPhone for when I'm in an area without 3G.

Gotcha, thanks. I will keep it loaded on my iPhone and test it out once I am outside of wifi range

Haha yep it's a great browser it's nice to have the tabs one touch away like a normal computer browser. Also not having to see ads and speeding up browsing is a win win situation.

At first it looked great to load www.macrumors.com quickly.

Then I went to the forum and found that this app seriously needs a lot of improvements:

1) Only 2 zoom levels available - "Pinch to zoom" is fake and only takes you to one designated level, which is unacceptable. Also, double clicking text blocks does not automatically zoom to "fit to screen", Lame.
2) In the default zoom level no text are readable, they just make it like ~~~~~~~~, i.e. Useless
3) Performance of the browser highly depend on the speed of OPERA'S SERVER. The speed of loading the same website varies greatly. Complex website loads quite slowly and redirection to mobile version sometimes does not work (the website I tested is www.discuss.com.hk which takes you immediately to m.discuss.com.hk for its mobile version)
4) As mentioned by other users before, clicking the status bar will not take you back to the address bar
5) Personally I don't quite like the current color scheme (Red / Black).

I hope that Opera will listen to us and improve their potentially great browser!

:)

bad idea

what kind of idiot would use this? everything you do goes through Opera's servers. any secure site you visit is DECRYPTED on Opera's server. dumbass idea.

well opera mini has been out for several years and I have yet to hear a story about anyone's info being stolen. it's not like your data is getting piped thru Riker's.

+1
Also I'm just not seeing the speed. Sure it pretty much throws the page up instantly, but that's after watching the "pinwheel" for about 6 or 7 seconds. The speed boost seems to be sleight of hand.

At any rate, any increase in speed is negated by poor page renderings, funky scrolling, and crippled zooming. Not being able to copy/paste also makes this browser pretty much worthless to me. I hope it gets better with updates, but for now it can't hold a candle to Mobile Safari.

it's definitely faster than safari but the experience is so much better in safari.

this app saw 10 minutes on my phone.

don't like it

After trying it out, Apple doesn't need to worry about me switching.

Amongst other things, it doesn't have auto-correct (if it has didn't find it). It renders ugly IMO.

Sticking to Safari.

Tried it. Deleted it. 2 stars. Quality first effort and it will find it's niche, but for power mobile browsing like we iPhone owners expect, it won't suffice. I do like its tabbed browsing however...

However for you users in Manhattan and SF, your browsing experience will be much faster since AT&T can't get the job done for you. :D

My draw dropped when I saw the headline. I guess apple isn't such a dick after all hehe.

Well, would be nice to know why the app was approved this time, since everyone expected it not to. So, maybe add this to the list of inconsistent approvals/rejects anyway.

Of course it is not decrypted. If it is https it does not go through Opera's servers. If it does, it is just realayed but in any case not decrypted.

So Mr. dumbass, learn a bit about security basics (certificates, session key ..) before insulting other people.
