sigh

This is getting ridiculous. I have a week 14 27' iMac and was deliriously happy with it until I stumbled on this thread. After hours of squinting, looking at it from different angles in different lighting situations the conclusion is yeah...there is a yellowness, but no, I would never have noticed it unless I was shown this bar test.

So thanks guys, for ruining my ignorant bliss. I managed to live with a broken screened iPhone for months now so I think I'll be happy to just suck it up.

For those who are still complaining with the yellow tinge. I think with 5 replacements, i am qualified to conclude that, all the imacs have yellow tinge, it is just a matter of how much and where it is located.

If you got yourself a screen with the minimum degree of yellowish, it is either keeping it or ask for a refund. There is no so call perfect screen, it is just the yellowish is not so much, and people tend not to notice it, hence saying it a perfect screen.

Here's a pic of my imac 27"
You can definitely see a yellow circle in the lower center of the screen.

This is my refurbished i7-4GB-2TB, received last Friday; after calibration the delta is 6530K-6266K = 264K. Not huge, but still noticeable. Don't know how many iMac's I would have to try to improve this ... (anyway, can't exchange a refurbished, so will probably ask for a refund)

Factory calibration:
middle-top : 8612K
middle-center: 8423K
middle-bottom:7915K
right-bottom: 8015K

Spyder3 profile (target =6500K, gamma=2.2, calibration performed at the middle-center):
middle-top: 6523K
middle-center: 6530K
middle-bottom: 6266K
right-bottom:6308K

I think the question is not how many imac you need to get, it is more on whether you can accept the yellow tinge or not. For me, this 5th one the yellow is at the bottom, where my dock has covered it up, and i need a mac with huge screen, therefore i have no choice but to keep this imac.

My dock is on the left, and the yellow at the bottom, so it's easy to see it. But you are right, since the issue is clearly not fixed, I have to decide whether I move from a yellow-free Dell 2707WFP (3-year old) to this iMac, or continue using my Dell + Win7 PC. I still have the choice as my Dell is not on ebay yet. And I can wait for the next refresh, with hope ... (and frustration to drop a great deal of a refurbished as new with 2TB for ~24% less )

On my receipt it does say they will charge me $185 to return it if opened. I am guessing this doesn't apply to defective products?

No. I returned mine and they refunded fully without incurring any extra charges as mine had a yellow tint. They even let me return the iPod and printer I bought for the rebates (which was tempting to open up but I held them back for 4 replacements).

Returning items because you changed your mind as an example, would get you charged a 10% restocking fee.

I agree 100%

I am still waiting to get my i7 back from repair, hopefully later this week.

In the meantime, in response to recent posts, I agree that all iMacs have some colour confirmity issues, which vary a lot in severity.

I also firmly believe that screen replacement is the best way to fix the problem, if you can be brave enough to potentially put up with a few dust specks or marks behind the glass.

The 2 times I have had a screen replaced have both resulted in huge improvements, and although those were not 100% uniform, it definitely fixed the vertical top-bottom conformity issue. i.e. when you use a web page maxed with a white background, colour at top = colour at bottom. All the iMacs I have had direct from China had serious problems in this regard, and all were much much better once screen had been replaced.

I can only conclude that this is a production line or transit problem with these China machines, or that the model of screen they are using for replacements in the UK is different to that being fitted in China.

I will report on my latest repair (screen, glass, case) in due course.

I'm waiting for my new order of an i7 from MacConnection. It's a week 16 built in USA. SN:SQP016....

btw, is that S in the SN mean a special order?

How did you get one built in the USA???

I'm not sure, but i think MacConnection is getting their iMacs orders from US factory. I got an i5 from them about 6 weeks ago and it was US built. HOWEVER, the display had the yellow tinge issue as well, so i returned it.

I have a 5 month old 27 inch iMac, I never did the test until now and I see that I do have the problem. Would Apple do anything for me now? I don't know that I would want to take the chance of replacing the display, and I doubt they would replace a 5 month old unit.

Has anyone waited until they were out of the 14 day return policy to bring this problem to Apple's attention?

maybe tell them it was fine when u got it and just started to turn yellow-ish recently and see if they can swap the panel for u?

....

They will try to repair it (replace panel for free - you have AppleCare, right?), if you are lucky you'll get a good one (panel, that is), eventually...
Computer replacement is unlikely after 5 months, unless you can talk really fast...:)

The original posts lists the different weeks of Imac being bought and whether it has yellow tint or not. Mine is the Imac 21 inch and it is 14th week.

Is there problem with the 14th week? Too complicated for me to know how to test.

Extensive Testing:

After recently purchasing a 27inch iMac (i7) on April 28th, I no longer believe that this issue has been fixed or will be fixed. I also no longer believe that this is a real issue. Let me explain:

I noticed a yellow tinge without attempting the test found on this thread, so I started doing some research and found the test and it made it even more obvious that the bottom half of the screen was slightly more yellow than the top. It also appeared to be brighter near the bottom of the screen.

So I took it back to the apple store and the manager there opened up three new iMacs that all had the same problem. The actual yellow tint varied in intensity, but all of them appeared to be brighter toward the bottom half of the screen. So we went to every mac in the store and ran the same test. 27inch iMac - 21.5inch iMac - 17 inch macbook pro - 15 inch macbook pro - all showed the exact same gradient from top to bottom. Slightly brighter toward the bottom and sometimes slightly more yellow.

So now I'm seriously doubting that there are any Mac products out there that do not have some slight difference when running this test. Has anyone got a 27inch iMac without a slight difference from top to bottom? I doubt it.

Therefore, I do not believe this issue will be rectified any time soon or possibly ever. Seems like it's a product of the technology.

On a side note, oddly enough my 13 inch MacBook Pro seems to not have a difference that I can see when running the test.
