After three i7's, Apple chose via their so-called Executive Relations to give me a refund. Sending me another iMac was apparently out of the question.
I suppose that's for the best, anyway. Three time's the charm!

But I find it intriguing that the last iMac I received was by far the worst; even though it supposedly was hand-picked.
- Grey bar, visible even when browsing the web.
- Nasty yellow tinge in the centre towards the bottom, while the upper half retained a more pinkish hue.
- Backlight bleeds, and severly so in the bottom right corner.

As others have implied, I believe they circulate the bad ones too. Even for customers who've complained. What a joke.

Hand-picked....... what a joke. Executive Relations....... another joke.
Apple is a gadget company. A great big Dollar Store.

I purchased an iMac 27..... Long story...... The worst decision I ever made was to keep the seventh one for more than 2 weeks. Now, I'm stuck with it. What really P!$$2s me off is that I will have to spend more money for AppleCare.

If one sends a short and polite email to one of the executives at Apple, I believe it gets forwarded to their "Executive Relations Team".
The name is comical, I know... But you might have better luck getting a refund from these people, as they seem to be have been instructed to do so.

One week old imac 21.5... yellow tint all down the right side of screen

obviously more noticeable when the page / background is white ....

Go get a refund mate! Unless you want to learn to live with a subpar screen. I tried and I couldn't do it.

EDIT: spelling

Lefsi - interesting to see your post. That was my exact same situation. Week 13 i7 direct from China (Apple Executive Relations), and it was the worst iMac of the lot despiute 'pre-screening'. Terrible grey bar, backlight bleed from bottom right corner, DVD scratches disks really bad.

An update to my situation - agreed to accept the i7 because my 'old' iMac flickering has become worse to the point of flickering every 30 seconds or so. So it must go back even despite a better screen and no DVD scratches.

I took the 'new' i7 into Apple Bristol store in the UK, and they agreed to replace the screen and also saw at first hand the DVD scratching. Said they had never seen this before (hmm). Ordered new optical drive.

I collected the iMac the other day and the screen was much much better, but the DVD drive was still scratching (they said it was fixed but I proved in store it was still doing it). I took the iMac home and then discovered severe greasy smears behind the glass of the replacement screen, and a row of dead pixels in the top left corner. A bummer as otherwise the screen was the best I have had (very very faint yellow stripe down the centre but otherwise perfect).

Interestingly backlight bleed was just as bad though as on the other screen, leading me to think that perhaps the two issues are not directly related i.e. you can get a better screen but bleed remains an issue if it was an issue in the first place.

Finally, I noticed a very weird further problem where condensation of some kind was appearing in a stripe across the screen (on the OUTside) after machine has been on for a few mins. Took the iMac back AGAIN and showed them the new issues with the screen. Demonstrated the condensation issue in store and the genuis has no idea what it could be. Totally baffled. They have now ordered another newscreen, replacement front glass, and an entire aluminium case to fix the disk scratching. We laughed that it is basically a new machine as it will take them all day to complete these repairs.

They gave me £100 store credit as goodwill for all my petrol and time for the 5th return trip to Bristol. Happy with that at least.

Returning to Bristol next week to pick up the repaired machine and fingers crossed this will be the final time. I would get a refund but it feels like admitting defeat - after 5 months of isses to walk away with no iMac would seem worse to me than ending up with one that is 99% OK. Plus I got my Mac tax free, a free upgrade to i7 from i5, and now a £100 store credit.

Despite my ongoing pain I am hanging on in there and will report the final outcome next week.

What a nightmare.

I would have told them to forget repairs and just give me a brand new one.

Week 16 imac arrived today.

This is my 5th imac, and the 3rd with yellowing. In fact, it's the most yellow I've ever seen. Pi$$ stained right across the bottom :(

I am almost speechless. I've had a range of weeks 53 to 16, none of which had been fault free. Imac number 4 was tempting with very little yellow, but it scratched the discs all to buggery.

No idea what to do next. Astonished that apple have let me down so badly, although the people in the call centre have been really helpful and kind. I have no idea what to do next. If the MBPs were quad core, I would have settled, but for a machine that primarily video editing I don't want to limit myself to a slower processer and less (more expensive) ram. And a mac pro is way out of my budget.

Sad :(

That's quite simply shocking mate..whats your next plan of attack ?

5th iMac?

I admire your persistence but I can only imagine how upsetting that must be.

Get a refund mate! Then head over to TonyMac and build yourself a *ahem* "MacPro". :D

This is the crux of the problem really...Apple's offerings are just so poor in general. You either get a really overpriced laptop, or desktop (which is WAY overpriced, both the pro and mini), or an all in one that basically doesn't work. Why is it like this? Other than to milk massive profits out of people who really don't know any better. I do not see how Apple can sustain this.

Got a week 12 iMac 27" i5. Yellow tint at the bottom middle. Warm yellow. Going to try exchange and see how it goes....

Good luck with the replacement!

It would also be good to hear from people who HAVE gotten good screens after their replacements. So far we have heard from people who continue to get crappy screens (for obvious reasons) but it would be good to know if this is representative of those who get replacement screens or whether we've just been unlucky! ;)

sorry if my english is not perfect,i'm italian.

taken this morning my new imac (ordered 6th april in premium reseller store).

this is a BTO machine: i7,8Gb ram,2 Tb hard disk

first impression testing common machine issues: perfect (yellow tinge included, but i will perform more test on this thing with different brightness conditions and colours).

not sure of what i'm saying,by the way a curious thing: mine was built in Czech Republic (lots of imac i have read cames from china).
i have also read that other users with recently imac built in Czech Republic has got no problem.

what do you think about built place? repeat: just a supposition that i want to share.

Got my replacement imac 27 i5 the other day but again it was not great.

Both machines are week 15 but this time it was built in Czech Republic where as the first was from Shanghai.

With the new machine, although the yellowing is not as obvious as before (pretty good actually) but I have now also two faint dark horizontal lines along the bottom of the screen, and backlight bleeding. I don't know if i am being paranoid but the HDD seems louder too compared to the first imac.

sent off another email requesting another replacement already, hope the next one would be perfect

I just did the alternate test with the finder window and blue and grey bars... wow, it was much worse than I thought!

So I decided to surprise my wife with the 27 inch I5 for her birthday... Who knew we were in for such a treat? I had heard from a friend that the yellowing issue was totally fixed. I suppose I should have done my own research on that.

The first one I got on Saturday I took back almost immediately due to what looked like a large chunk of dirt behind the glass.

The manager at the Apple Store exchanged it with no problem, and said that my LCD problem was "one in a million". I guess she was specifically referring to dirt behind the glass.

I got the second one home, and I noticed that the colors were much warmer near the bottom of the screen. The Tapplox test shows a very distinct yellow effect in both the lower left and right corners of the screen. Once you see it, it is super distracting. Since my wife is planning on using this for photo editing, graphic design, and all of her other creative hobbies I am not going to settle for this.

I checked my receipts, and both of the iMacs that I got were week 15.

Guess I am making a third trip to the Apple Store tonight after work.

From what I have read in the thread, the best course of action is going to be to keep exchanging them until we are happy? Once they "repair" one, I won't be able to get a refund or exchange it?

.......

The issue was "addressed", but if you plan to use it for photo-editing (and care about your colors) my best advice would be to return it and wait for the iMac line refresh (due in the next few months?).

Thanks for the reply Tom.

I just know that neither of us will be happy with it unless the screen is as close to perfect as humanly possible.

I think I will just return it and wait for the line refresh seeing as people in this thread have gotten 4+ replacements all with the same problems.

On my receipt it does say they will charge me $185 to return it if opened. I am guessing this doesn't apply to defective products?

The way I understand it, there is no restocking fee charged by Apple store (as opposite to some resellers - it was an Apple store, right?), especially on a defective product. I have no first hand experience, but Apple seems to be quite customer oriented and even bent on pleasing (who else would let you exchange computers 4+ times?).
Too bad they made this 27" screen blunder.

Yes, it was the Apple Store.

The receipt doesn't have any details about the policy, but just says:
Return Date: May 09, 2010
$187.91 fee if opened

I am assuming that means if I get it and just don't want it, not if I get it and it is defective.

Again, no experience here (early on I decided to wait for the refresh), but never heard of Apple Store charging restocking fee. Maybe you could simply start a new thread and ask? Here your question may be lost (people had heard enough of the yellow tinge).

Good luck!
