It makes alot of sense for people who want a choice and do not want someone else deciding how you use and what you use a dvice for. Most people would love the ability to play different formatted videos instead of being forced to use what apple allows you to use. Plenty of people want a device that is open instead of the walled garden ot the apple store.

Again, myrice, layoffs in your department at Adobe? Is that why you're here? Nothing but constant whining about video formats. Too bad about that dated flash.

I would think inbetween flipping burgers and working the fry machine you would be able to come up with a different insult. You fail with the adobe attack, it is typical apple zealot behavior though.

People What in sams hell do you think the iPad is when the next gen iPhone comes out with the same hardware inside.

its just a over sized iPhone/iPod touch.

my god some of you are dense.

and you moan and groan about anything else that can compete in this market as crap or just a over sized phone. WTF people look again at what the iPad is.

The Kindle is no match for anything like the iPad or iPhone or iPod touch. it is just for reading (it always has and always will), that is what it was designed to do best. Its really not even in the same league ( its well below it and over priced).

I don't think the iPad will soak up too many Kindle owners. It's still far better for that purpose than the iPad given the price and the lack of contract for 3G.
The Kindle is too expensive now. 490$ for the DX? 260$ for the 6"? There isn't much going for the Kindle except weight. Every casual reader out there will prefer to pay 500$ for something much more useful.

I really like my Kindle. For book, and especially, outdoor reading, the Kindle is far superior to the iPad. However, Amazon missed a great opportunity to hook a lot more readers by not offering it a much lower price point.
The Dell Streak looks nice, but it's no competition for the iPad.
Far superior? In what aspect? For dim-light reading the iPad is better.

This thing checks all of the iPad gripes:
1. Front facing camera
2. Back facing camera
3. GPS
4. SD Slot
5. User replaceable battery.
You have GPS. And a back facing camera would be very weird to use. For the FF camera, I frankly think that an add-on would be a better idea. Otherwise you will be stuck with holding the device in the same position every time you want to use the video.

Can you imagine Apple adding a front facing camera for video chat and then saying "well we don't actually have an App for that, but it will be great when there is one!"
Honestly? Absolutely not. Apple doesn't work that way.

I would agree about the video formats, but normally that is not that much of a problem, except for people who already ripped all of their DVDs or have pirated copies.
Everybody says "walled garden" like you cant do nothing on your Apple devices. Yes, there are some annoying restrictions, but overall I don't see the big problem.
Good luck with that Android.
In the end the streak isn't a competitor to the iPad at all.

In all respect, other than size there isn't much difference between the wifi iPad and the iPod touch.

Already though, Dell has screwed up. I just don't like the idea of there being 3 different sized models, personally. This one we're seeing is too small, imo. They really should have just released an iPad-sized one, and kept it at that.

In this case, size is everything. My impression of the iPad after using it for a few hours was that the multitouch os was really designed for the iPad. I started saying the ipod touch is a small iPad.

Flipping burgers and working the fry machine? Now you're projecting. Has it really come to that now that Adobe is cutting back? All of your newbie posts have been about flash. Tell us again why you're here.

Isn't Apple already eating a big chunk out of Amazon's sales of the kindle?

I think that there's a big segment of the market who do want to read ebooks etc., but they also want to be able to do a gazillion other things with their device, such as surf the web, watch movies, listen to music, play games etc. All of the people who fit under that huge category will get an iPad and not a Kindle.

Well since I've never seen numbers of the Kindle then we'll hardly ever know. Plus, believe me, those hardcore readers WILL prefer an e-ink screen. The most likely scenario for them is that they get both the iPad an any other e-ink reader.

I have 3 problems with the iPad as an ebook reader: weight, glare and eye strain. Those in this thread that are making fun of the Kindle are missing the point of it. It is supposed to be as close to a real book as possible. But hey, all heil apple right?

I haven't seen any numbers either, but I am pretty sure the iPad is eating at those casual readers. I'll give you the weight, but glare? How about dim light then? Also eyestrain is basically tired muscles:

E-ink or not, it's the same. No study shows that e-ink is better. Or at least I couldn't find one. The difference is mostly in the reflectiveness of the screen.

Hey Max baby - cool it - no point in gittin Mad

and as for the 'Steak' it's just an inedible Dell taco. :D

...only if you buy the more expensive Ipad. The WiFi model does not have GPS.
Minor point, but "the Ipad has GPS" as an unqualified statement is wrong - only the 3G model has GPS.
Well, semantics. I think it is pretty obvious what I am saying>
I was answering to someone who made a list of his iPad "gripes" and one of them was that it was missing GPS. Same unqualified statement :) And I think mine tends to be more correct.

There is no need for study, just ask the correct group of people (and by this I mean some feel the eye strain, others don't). And seriously, have you seen the iPad on outdoor settings, e-ink wins hands down.

For everything else, yes the iPad is better.

Oh, I know people with Kindles. And I've seen my MBP outdoor ;)
My point is just this, in some situations the iPad will be better, in others, the Kindle. Depends on your use. Kindle wins on battery life and lightness though. I absolutely see the need of such a device, but it is just too expensive now for the one thing it does

PS. The eye-strain people experience on their computers is most often just bad setting (light, position, etc.)

The Kindle is a superior reading experience. I can see them keeping a niche market, although that market will probably have shrunk with defection to the iPad.

I'm curious, why?

Not that I've had the chance to actually play with a Kindle. But the pics make it look kinda plain to read.

Honestly, after looking at ipad's book reader, I'd much ratehr have it as a book reader. It just feels right with how they have it operate (like changing pages and the screen is just nice).

Not arguing the ipad is better, just curious what it is about the Kindle that makes it the better book reader?
